I have to disagree. Sure some suicides are like that, but many aren't.

One of my roommates/friends commited suicide when I was in law school. The guy suffered through manic depressive bipolar disorder, and was in serious mental pain. The meds they had for him made him numb to the world, and when he was off of them, the very thing he needed to make sense of life (his mind) would betray him.

I wish he hadn't killed himself, as did his family. Shit, I even spent 4 hours arguing with him after I found him trying to kill himself one night. But I also recognize that given his disease, his decision-making was extremely flawed, and he was in incredible pain.

So I can't say that he got hurt for nothing.

Of course, no one likes it, and you hope there's another option. But if you're suffering from a mental illness, the one thing that helps you evaluate options has been compromised. The mind is not rational and irrational decisions happen.

I am friends with the family of my friend, and the one thing that helped them was hearing from professionals that their brother suffered from an illness that was often terminal. Yes, it was a different type of terminal than regularly used, but for that condition, suicide is often a result.

It sucks, and I wish it didn't happen, but I have to understand what my friend went through, and while I don't approve of it, I also don't condemn him for it.
