"The trainer was explaining different things about the whale, and then the trainer that was down there walked away from the window. Then [the whale] took off really fast in the tank, and he came back, shot up in the air, grabbed the trainer by the waist and started thrashing [her] around," Biniak said.
Biniak told WKMG that the whale, named Tilikum, or Telly for short, does not typically have a trainer in its tank because it is too large.
Tilikum is a nearly 30-year-old, 12,300-pound bull orca.

Tillikum was first sent to live at Sealand of the Pacific near Victoria, British Columbia. There, he lived with two older females named Haida II and Nootka IV. While living in British Columbia, Tilikum sired his first calf when he was about eight or nine years old. His first son, Kyuquot, was born to Haida II on December 24, 1991. Just a few months prior to the birth of Kyuquot, Tilikum was involved in an incident which resulted in the death of a trainer. Twenty-year-old Keltie Byrne, who worked at the park, slipped and fell into the tank with the whales. Tillikum, a pregnant Haida II, and Nootka IV grabbed her in their mouths and tossed her to each other, presumably playing. Keltie drowned. The orcas had never had humans in the water with them before. Haida II and Nootka IV were overprotective of the newborn calf and aggressive towards Tillikum, who was forced into the small medical pool. Because of his huge size, Seaworld requested an emergency transfer to their facility. Tilikum was moved to SeaWorld Orlando, Florida in January 9, 1992; he has been there ever since. Sealand of the Pacific closed soon thereafter.
Tilikum was at the scene of another death on July 6, 1999, though evidence suggests the Orca was not at fault. A park guest, 27-year-old Daniel Dukes, was found floating naked in Tilikum’s pool, apparently killed by a combination of hypothermia and drowning. Dukes had visited SeaWorld the previous day, stayed after the park closed, and evaded security to enter the Orca tank.
Tilikum never takes part in water work with trainers, not necessarily due to aggression (he is in fact very docile), but because he doesn't necessarily realize his own strength. Tilikum is the feature of the show "Believe" where the audience and trainers chant "Shamu" as Tillikum soaks the audience.[34] On February 24th, 2010 Tilikum was involved in a fatal incident with a female trainer. Witnesses report that during a show the whale grabbed a trainer by the waist and started thrashing her around. The attack was so violent one of the trainer's shoes was thrown off. The incident is currently under investigation. [35]

I work in Orlando and was inundated with news reports all day, most notably by the horrible 104.1's Jim Phillips. It was amazing to hear the various reports throughout the day and early evening. The 'news' has told so many stories its difficult to believe any of it. Sea World says one thing, the visitors to the park say something else. I just saw a lady on the news describe how violently the whale was swimming around the tank before the accident. Other reports claim the whale to be docile. Its an aptly named species and should be set free. Perhaps leaping over a jetty while a boy of undetermined sexual orientation tries to touch him as he flies over...

I love when they try to make shoes coming off an indication of tremendous power/violence.
I was watching the clip of the skateboarder who fell 50' off the ramp. The commentator goes crazy because his shoes came off.
Relax, maybe they weren't tied tight.

It wouldn't survive in the open ocean. It's been in captivity too long, being taken care of. Free Willy? They actually did free that whale and it couldn't adapt. It kep hanging out by the beaches where people could see her. She wouldn't join another Killer Whale pod, and most rejected her. She eventually died not long afterwards.

The circle of life continues, my friend. Better one whale die than three whale trainers. You could actually make the argument to stop capturing whales so as to prevent any further death by whale or human. I don't know if you have ever been to Sea World, but when you see and asshole in a wet-suit riding a whale like a surfboard, you start to root for the whale.

It was actually two whale trainers and one asshole who tried to fuck his blowhole.
I don't think they should be in captivity either, I'm just saying that releasing him would probably kill him.

I don't know why they even bother with a killer whale. Their only trick is to slightly jump out of the water. Of course, every once in awhile, they will slightly jump out of the water and flop on their back, or slightly jump out of the water with a trainer on their nose.
Stick with the fucking dolphins. They are the luchadores of the sea, and the most a dolphin is going to do is put his dick in your ear.

I dont get the whole "they shouldnt be contained because the trainers lives could be in danger" argument.
The whales are taken care of and are there for our entertainment. Yes its a dangerous job, but its a job these people train for and know the risks of. They do it anyway. Nobody forces them to do that.
People risk their lives needlessly all the time for entertainment purposes. Its part of what makes life great. Since when is safety such a huge priority for people?
Godspeed, poor trainer
