Did anyone see this film yet? I can count on one hand the number of foreign Language films I've seen (city of god, Goodbye Lenin and black book) but I heard good thinks about this movie at the weekend. I watched on Tuesday after having if for a few days.
The fact that it was subtitled was a little intimidating for someone who doesn't watch too many foreign films but man I forgot about that after about 5 minutes. The film was gripping all the way through and the comparison to scar face was a fair one that ron made yesterday. It really is the best movie of the crime/ gangster ere I've seen in a long long time.

I'll check it out...Thanks. You may also want to try, Gommorah. It is subtitled but honestly, a great movie if you like the druggy, gangster thing. Set in Italy, its A Great Movie!!!! I do not want to go into any more of it, so as not to ruin it for you.
Thanks again for the tip on Un Prophete, I'll check it out

Why, did you miss the part of school when they were teaching how to read?

I don't get this repulsion of subtitled films. It's not that hard to read a short line of text every few seconds and still follow the action on the screen.

PS: Here are some films you might want to try:

The Lives of Others (something German)
The Return (something Russian)
Persona (some Bergman)
Ran (some Kurosawa)
Pan's Labyrinth (something Spanish)
Waltz with Bashir (I think it has an English track, so hooray, no reading)
Das Boot (something German ... again)

I turn on the subtitles in every single movie that I watch. It started with movies that were with English accents but now I find that it is a lot easier to catch every nuance if I can read the dialogue along with the characters' delivery.

I fucking loved Gommorah, but there were some real mixed reactions to that movie.

In reference to subtitles, if a foreign movie is good, you'll never notice the subtitles.

I was just been honest. Sometimes I don't read so fast but the films i have seen with subtitles i have loved and it didn't take away from the action on screen. there was a couple of times when i missed lines and rewound it though!

i'll definitely check out those others you reccomended though.

thought this movie was amazing. The only problem i had with it was the creepy gay ghost that hung around him. I get why they did it but still thought it was unnecessary. Great film.

I saw this a while back and it was a great film. A great twist on a gangster film.

I went to see this tonight. I liked it but I really wasn't shitting my pants over it like some people. I liked the ambiguity and mysticism involved, but not knowing a lot about Islam probably hurt my full comprehension of the movie.

The last scene seemed like it played with a touch of comedy, and I know I wasn't the only person in the theater that thought so. Its hard to say if that was intentional. If it was I dont think it was appropriate. Although, not knowing a lot about the main character before he goes to jail we cant really say if he lost anything of value through his transformation.

I thought the most interesting part of the movie was his dealings on the outside, especially on the beach, and would've liked to have more focus there.

I did have issues with the subtitles, because its fairly important that the characters arent speaking the same language, but since none of them are speaking english its really hard for the audience to catch on.
