There's a manslaughter trial underway in my fair city where the parents are alleged to have either allowed or to have made their 16 month old kid drink methadone. Trial is only on its second day and already there have been a couple of lowlights that make me wish I could take a hammer to these assholes....

Father charged in tot's drug death drunk in court (http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Father+charged+drug+death+drunk+court/2631133/story.html)
After showing up drunk to the first day of his trial for the death of his 16-month-old daughter, Jonathan Hope spent the afternoon in the prisoner's box, weeping over testimony about the day the toddler died from an overdose of methadone.

The trial was delayed Monday when the girl's father arrived at court intoxicated, drawing harsh criticism from the judge who revoked the man's bail.

Father tells court he tried to revive baby using bare wires from lamp (http://www.calgaryherald.com/Father+tells+court+tried+revive+baby+using+bare+wi res+from+lamp/2632937/story.html)
CALGARY - A man accused in the overdose death of his toddler daughter tried to restart her heart using cords from a lamp and alarm clock after realizing she wasn't breathing, court heard this morning.

Jonathan Hope indicated to a paramedic and to the medical investigator that he attempted to use bare wires and some vaseline to revive 16-month-old Summer Hope, the two witnesses testified on the second day of the trial.

Horrible. The article doesn't say why they gave methadone to a baby.

Under cross-examination by Hope's lawyer Joan Blumer, Corrine agreed that Hope's mental function had diminished following a motorcycle accident some years ago.

Cornelis also said Hope was not always clear in his thinking.

Would there ever be a good reason?

Some people shouldn't have children.
Most people shouldn't have children. Instead of fluoride they should be pumping birth control into the water. Prove you have the financial means and behavioral skills to raise a kid you get a filter.

canadians.
I'd be all over that. Fewer Canucks means more parking spaces and less assholes on the highway.

Would there ever be a good reason?

I was wondering what their reasoning was. Probably something brilliant like the baby was crying and the methadone kept her quiet.

Baby Dies From Neglect While Parents Are Busy Raising A Virtual Online Baby

They raised an avatar baby through their profiles on a Second Life-style game called PRIUS, while their real daughter was given just one bottle of milk a day. Father Kim Yoo-chul, 41, and mom Choi Mi-sun, 25, called the emergency services when they returned from one online session in September last year and found their daughter dead.

Sadly the parents from the story I first posted were acquitted of the serious charges (the judges in my country are fucked). They were found guilty of the summary charge (Canadian version of a misdemeanor) failing to provide the necessities of life which holds a maximum sentence of 18 months. This means that given the appalling practice of providing up to a 3:1 credit for time served they'll likely serve little or no further time.

Adding another muppet to the list of a stellar parent, leave your 4 month old in the bushes while you go looking for your wife. (http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/state/police-father-abandons-infant-near-universal-studios-to-361760.html)
