ABC pulls WABC-TV off Cablevision in New York area
by Lynette Rice
Categories: News, Oscars, TV Biz, Television

ABC-Disney followed through with its threat tonight by pulling the New York-area WABC-TV from Cablevision after it failed to reach a re-transmission agreement with the cable giant. Some 3 million Cablevision customers in Long Island, Westchester, Brooklyn, and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey were affected.

Rebecca Campbell, President and General Manager, WABC-TV, released this statement: “Cablevision has once again betrayed its subscribers by losing ABC7, the most popular station in the tri-state area. This follows two years of negotiations, during which we worked diligently, up to the final moments, to reach an agreement. Cablevision pocketed almost $8 billion last year, and now customers aren’t getting what they pay for…again. It’s time for Jim Dolan and the Dolan Family Dynasty to finally step up, be fair, and do what’s right for our viewers.”

Cablevision’s exec VP of communications Charles Schueler released a statement in response: “It is now painfully clear to millions of New York area households that Disney CEO Bob Iger will hold his own ABC viewers hostage in order to extract $40 million in new fees from Cablevision. We call on Bob Iger to immediately return ABC to Cablevision customers while we continue to work to reach a fair agreement.”

ABC began warning customers last week that they could miss the Oscars because of the stalemate. Affected subscribers can still access WABC-TV for free by going old-school with an antenna.

And a digital converter box for around $50.

Looking forward to hearing this. Fez was in peak catty form during last year's Oscar Preshow Spectacular when he critiqued the fashion styles of the rich and famous. He dominated the broadcast so much that a neutral listener might've gotten the impression that Ron was second mic despite getting top billing in the show title.

Hasn't Fez covered the I-did-a-rod? Maybe he can go on Esd's new sports show.

Will this require the same DVR procedures as last year, or will it not be a "watch-it-with-us" commentary? Last year was great.

Can anyone tell me why I should care about the Oscars? How much weight do we put into their decisions? How many times do they give awards for past efforts (robbing someone this year)?
It isn't like years ago when we rarely glimpsed the stars. I get see them all running to starbucks and yoga every day now.
The show itself is usually nothing spectacular.

Meaning?
Why should I care what the academy thinks? At least with critics I know who they are and how they have reviewed movies in the past.

I don't get much out of the broadcast, but I appreciate having the Academy Awards as a historical reference. When I look for old movies to watch, I check Oscar and Cannes nominations.

There are plenty of critics awards and they have some value...The Oscars have value too because it is an industry insider award and their perspective is different.

Everyone has an opinion like everyone has an asshole....sometimes I prefer a different type of asshole.

You shouldn't. They're the be all end all for cinematic worth only for those with superficial knowledge of the medium. I only watch because old habits die hard, and I hope to witness one of those shocking upsets that are seemingly more rare in an era when conclusions are as foregone as ever. The ceremony loses credibility every year, and most of the time the statuettes are doled out based on industry politics. The foremost examples this year of actual cinematic quality not factoring into the voting process are the likely occurrences of Bigalow taking home Best Director solely because a person with a vagina has never prevailed in this particular cateogry, and Bullock taking home Best Actress for an unworthy-of-Academy-recognition project simply because she's well-liked among her peers. Much like box office, movie geeks make up the rules for the relevancy of Academy Awards as they go along. If we like a movie that does well financially or triumphs at the Oscars, then there's a clear correlation between cinematic quality with these ancillary outlets. If we dislike a movie that does well financially or triumphs at the Oscars, then we're apt to disregard both as true barometers of cinematic quality.

If you listen online the delay is longer than regular radios. 45 second delay for online listeners. My remote has a 15 second back button, so I clicked it 3 times and I'm synced up perfectly.

A nomination meant as much as winning. Except now that they increased the number, being nominated is meaningless.

Thank you. Not a big fan of an awards show. I couldn't see sitting through a two hour show for them to present world series, super bowl, and stanley cups.

Fez is actually quicker than Dave tonight, this sort of gig is right in his wheelhouse. And Ronnie is hit or miss with the machine gun jokes, Fezzie is the sniper who's coming in and killing with his occasional jokes.

I don't see where you are going with this.

Yes I'll wait to see the game. Just like I wait to see the movies. But if instead of just giving the trophy at the end of superbowl they had a two hour show with bad bits and a celebrity fashion show I wouldn't watch. It's all pomp and circumstance.

Man, you love to complain. Like you, the fascination wwith these award shows (namely now) escapses me. However, why come here to bitch about it? My suggestion: Don't watch.

I was asking what the attraction is. Thought maybe people could offer insight, like gerald. I love movies(netflixing at least 6 a week) . But I have watched oscars before and was bored senseless. However, I could see it being fun to watch with r+f. Lastly, you are becoming obsessed with me. Got it, I lost my chance at universal acceptance.

Is this show going to make it into the library soon? Couldn't catch it, but would love to listen, and I know these special shows often make it in there.
