Yesterday on the show they briefly talked about how America is the only country to use the atomic bomb. Ron and Dave had a skeptical tone when saying it was ultimately correct to drop the bombs because of the loss of life we were facing if we needed to invade Japan. Hopefully the series will go a ways to convince them. WWII stuff is so focused on Europe you dont get a lot about the Japanese mentality, and some of the stuff they did.

Do you mean on netflix/to rent? Because Band of Brothers was like 80 bucks when it came out on DVD, it would be way cheaper to just get HBO for 3 months.

I thought for a second when they were landing in the Higgins Boats that the tripod was a movie camera.

They're showing this On Demand on Comcast, so I got to see it yesterday. Thought it was phenomenal. They did a magnificent job of building tension and paranoia throughout the scenes where they were getting off the beach and into the jungle, and I liked how you never really saw the Japanese in any of the battle scenes. The scene with the dead Japanese on the beach was humbling.

The reason they font give you a lot of back story, is because in this part of the war there were too many deaths to follow one group of people.

They follow three different groups.

You can also dl this in 720p already.

I saw the "qoute" your hayseed friend is talking about. Hanks mentioned that racism, excited by each government and the brutal battles they fought, played a part in the Pacific theater. Look at any of the propaganda on either side. It's pretty obvious it's racist stuff. He never said it was the reason they fought the Japs.

The greek/aussie was hot but last nights episode was near unwatchable. They could have spent a half hour on the R&R stuff in Australia. But a whole episode? That was more brutal to watch than the unrelenting slaughter of Japs at Guadal Canal.

It was a little slow, but go back and watch BoB. There weren't as many huge battle scenes as you think. The pacing is way off.

With BoB, you had that first episode, where you bonded with the characters as they went through training, and it was all building up to the intense battles to follow. Here, it started with them on a boat ... tension, tension ... and nothing. Then 30 seconds of fighting, then nothing again. It's all over the place.

There was a great American Experience episode not long ago about the end of the Pacific war, and the struggle to get Japan to finally surrender. They went into the plans that were being made for the invasion of Japan itself. The main plan was to invade the southern island of Kyushu. Intelligence at first told them Japan had 4 divisions there, and they made plans accordingly, estimating a casualty rate in the invading force of about 40%.

Then more intelligence came in. Japan didn't have 4 divisions on Kyushu. They had 13.

Even after the first atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima, there were still Japanese generals refusing to allow a surrender. One of the leading proponents of fighting on swore in a meeting that there was no way the Americans had more than one atomic bomb, and Truman's threat of a "rain of ruin" was a bluff. That meeting was interrupted by news of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

It could have been far worse, though. General Marshall was looking into the use of atomic bombs against the defenders in Kyushu, which would have been the first tactical use of nuclear weapons. By the end of 1945, the US could have had at least 10 atomic bombs. Dropping that many on the island of Kyushu probably would have rendered it an atomic wasteland, poisoning the invaders as surely as the defenders.

But the thing about it, when you look at the internal debates the Japanese government had about surrender, is that the fact the Soviet Union was entering the Pacific war seemed to have had as much of an effect on them as anything else. And it's probably good that the Soviets didn't get into the war much more than they did, or we'd probaby end up with communist "North Japan" and capitalist "South Japan" in the end.

It's a great documentary, and while I don't think it explicitly argues dropping the bomb was a good thing, it shows that Truman didn't really have much of an option. I thought it also showed that the dropping of the bomb on Nagasaki was probably much more necessary than some historians have thought, in that it showed that we could do something like Hiroshima again. And an invasion of the Japanese homeland would have been nightmarish.

The ninth and second to last episode tonight was once again brilliant, but also brutally hard to watch.

Some of those scenes, just gut wrenching.

The actor who plays Snafu, I don't think I have ever seen him in anything, but he could be a big star someday, he is amazing. The kid from the dinosaur film is also very good.

I really wonder how well this DVD is going to do in comparison to BOB, I just don't think people will be willing to watch these over and over like BOB.

This episode really showed why Truman had to drop the bomb, the horrors of what would have happened if we invaded Japan, it was just not humanly possible to do that to our soldiers after what they have already been through.

That scene, of the woman that "begged" to be shot in the head, was done so well. I wanted him to pull the trigger, to help her. But, what he did instead, was even better. Wow.

I liked the ending. Not the positive exciting ending people were probably hoping for. But I thought it played out well. well worth the 30 bucks i payed hbo.
Everyone knows the Nazi stories of WW2 but alot of us didn't know much about what these guys had to fight against ( in my opinion a much more terrifying ememy and under much more horrific conditions). And coming home didn't mean instant happiness for everyone.

What those Men and women went through make me feel guilty to complain about every day stupid problems..Motivates me in ways that nothing else can.......Im having a great Birthday...:drunk::drunk::drunk::drunk:

If you enjoyed The Pacific you will be blown away by Band of Brothers. And if you teared up a little at the last ten minutes of the finale of The Pacific, you'll be needing a whole box of tissues for Band of Brothers...and those won't be happy tissues...or maybe I'm just a sissy.

Oh no The Pacific was defiantly a emotional story. I have heard the same about Band Of Brothers. I don't know why I didn't watch it the first time it aired but I have all of the episodes ready to watch I'll probably start this weekend.
