Let us know what you think.
I'm through the first 2 chapters. It's extremely linear thus far and the way they were handling different intertwining plotlines has made the game seem very stammering. And it's way too early to judge the combat system because I'm still at the "attack, attack, attack, attack, attack" phase.
And so far Vanille and Hope have to be the two worst Final Fantasy characters ever.
Vanille: HEY. LET'S GO! HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!
Hope: Uhm..... erg........ eh........ Why are you so happy? Uh.......... oooh............. hrm............ We're gonna get killed! Eh........ uhm............ ooohh.........
Vanille: WE GOT TO MOVE FORWARD!!!! TEE HEE!!!! TEE HEE HEE!!!!!!!!! AND YOU GOT TO TELL HIM!!!!!!!
Hope: Eeeehhhh........... hrm............. uuuhhhh............. I'LL GET HIM!!!!!!!!! Urg............. hmm.............. eehh.............
Vanille also breaks into what I can only assume is an Australian accent about a quartet of the time.
I'm a little farther now and I'm enjoying this a lot. Once the Paradigm system is introduced the combat get a lot more interesting. The combat system is almost like a cross between all of the PS2 Final Fantasys' (X, X-2, 12). It's a fast paced ATB system like X, you can switch between classes on the fly like X-2 and there is a lot of automation and strategy like 12.
I'm a little at a loss as far as the story goes. You really get thrown into the middle of the story. I'm not even sure what exactly the Cocoon is yet. I like Lightning thus far, Snow is tolerable and Sazh is pretty entertaining. Vanille and Hope are cunts and should die. Even when they aren't yammering on with their brain melting dialogue they still manage to annoy even when in the background. Hope makes sighing and whining sounds in the background and Vanille giggles incessantly. I've never hated characters this much this fast into a game.

Wow, the sound effects in this game are loud and annoying it. Every step the characters makes them sound like they're wearing tap shoes and it overpowers every other sound. Luckily, the worst characters can be drowned out by gunshot steps.

Normally the squeaky characters don't annoy me, but this time it's just too much with Vanille. And like you guys said, that accent is just weird. If she had it the whole time it wouldn't be so bad, but it only pops up on certain words.
So far I'm not sure how I like this game. I love the idea of the Paradigms and all, but I prefer these games to have a Wait feature like FFXII had. I don't like how the action continues while you are changing. My guys are getting hit in the middle of changing Paradigms and to me that's just stupid. You can't defend yourself in those instances.

I'm heading out to pick it up right now, the things I've heard so far are not so great.
I'd love to go back to the old turn based battle systems of FFVI but that will never happen. The characters do look super annoying too, but it's FF so I'll buy it. I have a dusty fucking PS3 here that I bought a year and a half ago simply because this game was supposed to be PS3 exclusive.

The 360 version has a lower resolution and compressed video so you are getting a little something more with the PS3 version. There is also a card included with a code that I've heard gets you into the FF14 beta or at least a better chance. I haven't entered my code at the website yet so I don't know for sure.
As for the game, I'd be more enthusiastic if I could get a handle on the story. It throws you into the game when the shit has already hit the fan and tries to hand you a bit at a time. I didn't know what a Fal'Cie or what L'Cie's were for the first couple hours and those are very much major plot points. It just takes it's time explaining everything. The first real dungeon in the game is REALLY long, obviously extended so they could jam in a bunch of exposition. But answers do come, just slowly.
If you check your Datalog everytime it updates it helps a lot. It's similar to the Codex Bioware includes in Mass Effect and their other games. The only differences are that the entries are short and to the point and the info there is probably too important not to be explained in game.

I think you are being harsh. For example, when they first became l'Cie, hated enemy of Cocoon, and they said they were l'Cie, hated enemy of Cocoon, and they were despondent because they were l'Cie, hated enemy of Cocoon, and they had to find out what their focus was because they were l'Cie, hated enemy of Cocoon, and unless l'Cie, hated enemy of Cocoon, find out their focus l'Cie, hated enemy of Cocoon, become Cie'th.

Alright, how the hell are you supposed to beat Odin with just Lightning and that pansy Hope? The game goes from mind-numbing ease to a difficulty spike that's off the charts at that fight. That dumb ass Doom clock doesn't help either.

Haha I am at the exact same point. Hope eats it every time. Libra says "yields to those who amass chain bonuses" but I don't even have a chance.
You should have picked up a couple spark rings in the lead up to the Odin fight. Equip those. It helps minimize Odin's lightning attacks.. Otherwise attack relentlessly with Lightning and go medic with Hope when you get to 50% health.

Actually, that's exactly what I am doing and it's not working for me. I have Lightning as a Commando and Hope as a Medic. Even with that setup, Hope can't heal the party fast enough. I'm constantly having to throw potions around to support his slow ass and that takes away from me attacking.

I'm just going to grind until I get Hope that extra Accessory slot, then give him silver bangle for 100+ hp and the spark ring. I read go medic/medic until odin puts up his shield, then switch to rav/rav to get chain up, then switch back, but that didn't give me enough time when I just tried it.

It's a long way gone since the days of Final Fantasy VI it seems. Maybe having only 16-bits, midget characters, and the inability to use voice acting was to this series' boon. I haven't found any of the Final Fantasies from X on to be very good. You'd think they'd have learned their lesson after having to merge with Enix because they financially sunk themselves with that horrible CGI movie they made in the late 90's. That movie is so bad that friends who tell me they sort of liked it are or should be dead to me as a matter of principle.
I'd like to see a Final Fantasy that didn't involve some hippy dippy tween model being the hero.
My haterade gauge is now empty, and I can move on with my life.

It's not as bad as I thought it would be, but I really hate the fact that they now think they have to automate fighting. Paradigm shift is basically just automating the role of tank, attacker, healer, buffer, etc, all the things that you would do as a matter of strategy manually in prior games. But it seems they think people don't want to have to wait and plan out their strategies anymore, so they just automate it.

Ok, I 5 starred Odin this time. I ran back and forth a bit for some battles to get CP. I raised Hope to the point where you can get an additional accessory slot, and gave him a silver bangle for +100 HP, and the spark ring for lightning resistance. I used 2 shrouds prior to the battle to get all the buffs, and then started as ravager/medic, when Odin put his shield up, switched to ravager/ravager, switched back to ravager/medic when he started attacking again, repeat, etc.

Out of curiosity, why Ravager and not Commando? Is Odin more susceptible to spells than physical attacks?
I'm finally at the open world part. It's at Chapter 11 and it took me 24 hours to get there. There's still no towns. And it seems like you don't even have to bother with most of what is there. There's a bunch of missions you can do and the area is huge and beautiful. The main part of the world is extremely reminiscent of a section of Final Fantasy X, and I even think they share a name, or part of it. It seems like you can spend as little or as much time with it as you wish.

Is this when the game stops being completely linear?
Some of the reviews I read said that you have to play 20 - 40 hours before the game makes sense and really opens up. I guess they weren't kidding.

Yeah, it takes a long time for the game to open up. The story starts making sense sooner than that though.
The thing about the open world though is that it seems like you can blow through it and none of it is necessary for progressing. There are a bunch of missions which boil down to finding and defeating bosses. And there is a chocobo treasure hunting section. And maybe more. I've heard that the rest of the game after Chapter 11 is hard enough that some running through missions is pretty much necessary. I've been running through missions so i don't know how much of what is in Chapter 11 is essential to progressing through the game.
I will say that the intro to Chapter 11 and the first glimpse of its world is enough to pique most people's interest to do more than just pass through. It's REALLY beautiful.

Okay, that's good to know. Thanks.
A good rule of thumb through the entire game is Ravager the hell out of the enemy to stagger them, then physical attacks to punish them after the stagger. But be careful using an all Ravager paradigm when building up to stagger. Magic attacks raise the stagger bar faster but they also fade faster. Physical attacks barely raise the stagger bar but make it fade much less faster. Make you sure you throw in some physical attacks while building the stagger or the bar will disappear as fast as it built up.

I died so much last night trying to fight the motor cycle thing that breaks out the Gatling Gun. I fucking hate that thing.
The more I think about the story and back on the areas I passed the more I like it. This is a much more character driven story than any other Final Fantasy. It should have been obvious from the beginning. You are thrown into story already well in progress. And while the game takes it sweet time explaining what is going on, where you are and what the hell L'Cie and Fal'Cie are it wastes no time exploring the characters, who they are, what drives them and what led them to the Fal'Cie in the beginning. And before the game dedicates itself fully to the overarching plot each character confronts and defeats their own flaws. At the point where I am now even Hope isn't annoying anymore. And if you pay really close attention even Vanille's on again off again accent in the beginning makes sense.

I am never going on gamefaqs boards again, someone spoiled the ending bigtime in a thread there, dammit
I finished it tonight. The ending was..... OK. I heard it was some great ending and it definitely wasn't. The endings to 12, X and X-2 were all much better. And it degenerated somewhat into almost incomprehensible Japanese bullshit. And it does something that a lot of JRPGS do.
From the turning point of the game until the end the objective is "Save Cocoon, don't destory Orphan, Save Cocoon, don't destroy Orphan, Save Cocoon, don't destroy Orphan." But for some reason they keep on going to Orphan, even at the point when they figure out the reasons they were heading there in first place were all deceptions. And what do they do when they get there, under their own free will? Kill Orphan and destroy Cocoon. And it seemed the only reason they did this is because the developers had no other ideas for a final boss.
And yet somehow by just having a bunch of strange, unexplained things happen for no reason it's still a happy ending. Even though they did EXACTLY what the bad guy wanted them to do.
What made it OK is that they built up some really strong characters and because of the the end was touching. And the end tied into the game's logo in a really awesome way. Although it was strange that they built Lightning up to be the main character at the beginning and she's an afterthought by the end.
And one thing I'm pissed about: that huge fucking giant monster thing introduced in the intro video to Chapter 11 is one big fucking cocktease. If you come back to the Gran Pulse plains later in Chapter 11 you can even see the thing walking in the distance. But can you ever fight him? FUCK NO. Bullshit. WHY EVEN INTRODUCE HIM THEN? HE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Towards the end battles get a bit tedious since you have to stagger every single monster to do any significant damage. It makes the battles seem longer than they are and tarnishes an otherwise fun battle system. But the area introduced in Chapter 11 is a great highlight in many ways. But I don't think this game is as good as either of the last 3 major Final Fantasy releases (X, X-2 and XII). Too many flaws. While it was a step forward in developing characters it was a major step back in terms of story. A lot of unexplained nonsense happening and awkward lingo which is disappointing since XII discarded it in favor of a simpler and more straightforward story that actually made sense.
So there it is. In my opinion as far as the entire series goes this game is middle of the road. But there was still a lot in there to like.

I made it to Chapter 11 (in 24 hours) and started getting my ass kicked. I must be far behind or something. So now I'm wandering out dying a lot.
Anyone up to this point, what are you using for your team?

I used Lightning/Fang/Hope at that point. I had Lightning as my main punisher with a Tier 2 maxed out Gladius with two strength enhancing acc. Fang I kept with a weapon that kept her balanced with good strength and good magic. And Hope I maxed out on magic. Generally I went around with a Rav/Com/Rav party. When I staggered enemies I went Com/Com/Rav. I also kept a Med/Sen/Med paradigm. Lightning and Hope can heal quickly with Fang drawing attacks with buffed D. When facing bosses or stronger foes I started out with a Med/Sab/Syn paradigm. Fan can debuff the enemy while Hope buffs your party and Lightning can keep everyone healed.
For the beginning of Chapter 11 I suggest to staying far away from anything big, and by that I don't mean just the huge turtle things. Try just sticking to those tiger looking things and those flan monsters. But even be careful with them. It's a tough chapter, you will need to grind for a bit. Do a few missions, they help level you up.

I've been using Lightning/Vanille/Snow, but sometimes using Hope or Fang (I almost never use Tasz or whatever his name is). I've started learning the SYN for Lightning.
I tried fighting one of those huge turtle things just to see what would happen and I don't think I got a shot off. It was hilarious.
I'm going to keep wandering and fighting battles to level up. I've wandered into a "highlands" area that seems completely different. Are there a bunch of different areas I'm unaware of?

There's a few side areas in addition to the other areas that lead to the ultimate destination. But that main plains has a few different sections. If the environment changes with stuff like added fog or something like that you are still in the main area. If you hit a loading screen you went into a different area. Oh, and BTW, for some incredibly stupid reason the map screen rotates the map randomly. If you go to the menu and the map looks completely different its because the game rotated it for no reason whatsoever. It confused the fuck out of me. Why they would do something like that just blows my mind. It requires a level of stupid I didn't think existed.
But I would advise against learning an additional job for Lightning or anyone else. The CP requirements are SO HIGH that you are wasting CP. But the third level you need over 10000 CP to advance one sphere. It's not worth it at all. Stick to their main jobs.

I'm at the very beginning of Chapter 11 and I'm going to wait and do nothing but play it tomorrow. Right now my party is Snow, Sazh, and Vanille because I've leveled Snow up with really high strength and Vanille with really high magic. I've also discovered how useful the Sentinel class is, especially when you want to wear down the enemies while strengthening your team.

I just got to the beginning of 11 too. I use Light/Hope/Fang. I prefer Fang as Sen over Snow. I just started, the CP amounts to level up are getting obnoxious... like 4-5 battles to go one space. Whats the average CP I can get on Gran Pulse?

I never realized this at the beginning of the game, but just found out... If you use bones and those types of things to upgrade your weapon w/ low exp, the multiplier goes up. If you use the robotic/electronic items with higher exp, the multiplier goes down. Sturdy bone is 80gil, and 36 of them give you 3x multiplier, you can then use those high XP items to upgrade the shit out of your weapon with the 3x multiplier. WISH I KNEW THIS EARLIER IN THE GAME.

How the hell do you defeat Nix? I got all the abilities possible with Snow so I cant use CP points to get any more. Also, when does thos Crystal thingies upgrade? Everyone is still on Lvl. 1.
Also, why did they make it that you can't earn Gil after each battle?

I hate this game and I want it to be over.
I'm on Chapter 12, after wandering around Chapter 11 for like 12 hours leveling up. I finally figured out the transitional metals and how to upgrade stuff well and what to sell back to the stores. Of course I don't figure this out until Chapter 12, but whatever.

Attacking will not help you in this fight. If you cast Libra on her and then go into the info screen while in the fight (R1 if you are on the PS3. Don't know what it is for the Xbox 360 controller) it will tell you in the notes what needs to be done to beat each Eidolon. With Nix, you have to change your Paradigm to Sentinel and basically defend against each attack. That's the quickest way to build up the Gestalt bar and when it reaches a certain point it will tell you which button to push to finish the fight (Square if you are on the PS3. Don't know about the Xbox 360 controller). Don't worry about hit points as the other one with Nix keeps healing you.
As for the Crystarium, it will expand at certain points throughout the game. Actually, after you beat Nix, Snow's will expand.

After being forced to follow a certain path the whole game, I feel completely lost in Chapter 11. All of a sudden it's huge and wide open like FF XII was and I have no idea where I'm going.

I guess I made it to the end of the game last night. I can't defeat the last boss, though. He just keeps Instant KO'ing me. I almost beat him the first time, but I keep getting worse and worse.

I think if you have an active medic in your party it nullifies instant KO. And from what I remember he does his attacks in a pattern. When you try again see if the instant KO attack is always preceded by another attack so you know when to activate your medic.

I think I'm just going to stop playing this game and start playing Unchartered 2. I don't really like this FF game. It's so linear and tedious. Even Chapter 11 was barely non-linear and incredibly tedious.
Oh, and I'm fairly certain I've been ko'ed as a medic.

Honestly if you quit now you aren't missing much. You are close enough to the ending to realize what a cluster fuck it would have to be.

The storyline, or whatever you could call it, has completely fallen apart anyway.

Im thinking of packing it in as well. Story doesn't hold me at all. Might trade the game in for something else, maybe Dragon Age.

dragon age is the fucking tits.
The problem with FF13 is that it took forever to peak, and then once it did it was only like 75% done and quickly fell apart. The story stopped making sense and the battles became extremely tedious. The last dungeon leading to the final boss was pure hell.
As annoying as some of the characters were in the process of finding themselves that part of the game was so much better than the rest. Once every character finally reached some inner peace and decided to soldier on the game lost direction quickly. At times it seems like even the characters don't know why they are doing what they are doing.

I beat it a few days ago and got all the achievements for maxing out jobs yesterday, I'm not going to even bother with the rest because they'll just involve tons of grinding.
If it didn't have the Final Fantasy name, I probably would have liked it more. On it's own, it's an ok game, as part of the Final Fantasy series, it didn't live up to my expectations. I hope they go back to turn based in the future.

I hardly play RPGs anymore because I'm a big fan of turn based combat. Hell, I'm more likely to throw in FF Tactics than most new games because I like the strategy aspect, not frantic action.
I think I'm going to pass on this one. There's so many other games out there I'd like to get to, and this kind of gets away from a lot of the things I like about the Final Fantasy series. I do want to see how Final Fanasy Versus XIII turns out.

Even though I would prefer the game to go back to a true turn based system like FFX, I am getting the hang of this and it is kinda fun in it's own way.
The one thing I do want back is true leveling up. The Crystarium was cool and all, but I miss having your characters level up and their stats increase that way.
And can anyone explain how Sazh, who is a full grown man has less strength than the two kids? That makes no sense to me. I'd have no problem if he was just the weakest of the four adults, but to be weaker physically than two annoying brats is silly.
