View Full Version : Blood Donations for My Niece

As you may know, my niece Laura is undergoing chemotherapy to treat a benign tumor in her spinal cord. It is a benign tumor (and hopefully it will remain so) but because it lies within the spine, we can't let it grow because if left untreated, it can destroy the nerves of her spine leaving her paralyzed.
So far, Laura has managed her chemo really well and her tumor cells seem to be stable and possibly shrinking which is super news! The one problem is that her blood quality is erratic and the chance of her needing a transfusion is high. As such, I've established a blood bank account for Laura Silva at Hackensack University Medical Center.
If you would like to help, we need people to donate blood and what we need is B+, B-, O+ or O- blood. If you don't know your blood type, you can donate blood and they'll type it. If it matches, it'll go into Laura's account; if it doesn't, it'll go into the general population blood bank to help save someone else's life.
If you would like to make a donation, please contact Nadia at Hackensack at 201-996-4819 and say that you'd like to donate for Laura. Please let me know too!
Giving blood is easy and safe and if Laura doesn't use your donation, it can help someone else. Your generosity is so welcomed! We are blessed.
Thanks to everyone for your love and prayers. We are so lucky to have you in our lives.
Much love,
Leo Hernandez

Donate first, then have a pint later.

You should just give it a shot. I work with a pothead girl who gives blood regularly. The worst they're gonna do is destroy your blood and send you a letter telling you not to donate in the future. Or just be honest during the prescreening and they'll tell you you're not elgible if its a problem.

Spoke with Nadia in Hackensack she told me the following.
Find a blood center in your area
1. see if they have a shipping license
2. if they participate in direct donor donation programs
3. what type of paperwork do they accept, do they have their own or can they accept Hackensack.
4. Each location out of state has to have an account open for direct donor for laura which means a family member must open it.
5. Find out what the cost is for shipping the blood, this will be paid for by the person making the donation.
If you cant donate blood directly for Laura you are more then welcome to make donations because blood banks are in short supply.

I like OTB am too far away and unfortunately there is nowhere here to even donate. When I lived back home I would donate whenever I could, there were always clinics going on. Here there is nothing. I can't even go to the hospital to donate, I asked.
I think the reason is because there is such a huge issue with...hmmmm...how do I put this without sounding like I am racist...well the issue is with indigent natives. There are tons of them and I think it is just not worth the hassle for them to screen everything. Add to it the fact that we are 700 km from Winnipeg and transportation is probably a huge issue too.
Best of luck to your niece. She is lucky to have someone like you looking out for her. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v601/Hunnerbun/imnotworthy.gif

i get really fainty and loopy after i donate. i usually dont say anything to the nurses because they wont let me finish filling the donation bag. they usually keep me at the snack table for a long time after im done.
any dot netters willing to step up and get me there?

Laura finished round three of chemo and unfortunately it's catching up to her. She feels bad and looks it. I know things could be much much worse but it still really sucks to see your little girl like this. I know we'll get through it but it's not easy. :(
Please pray for her n spread the word for blood donations.
Thank you

Shipping should not be required, as blood can be exchanged. Donated at one center, credited to another. Same w/ types. True, its nice to get a matching type , but you can donate for a paitent , and it will be credited to that paitent in the type matching the paitents requirement.

Its not about matching its about direct deposit to her blood bank hackensack does not have a shipping license, therefore any donations for her must have a shipping license. Further for direct deposit a blood account must be opened in each state for her

I understand that your living in the moment, your saying that the red cross is unable to take a donation in her name and facility in one state and withdraw from the blood bank localy. This would be refferd to as an exchange......I've never heard of this issue before.

never said anything about the red cross. Red cross has nothing to do with this

Hackensack has issues w/red cross ? Why wouldn't they allow the assist ?
tanless1

I am shocked and dissapointed that the red cross no longer offers the exchange service. The reason givin is the hospitals insurer no longer allows it. Per the red cross this has just changed in the last year.
...somebody needs a poke in the eye. They are more then happy to send a card. To which I replied " a card is of little help to a family under water" let's see what we can do to get this policy reversed, making it easier to help eachother.
Still on antibiotics from my surgery, bastard. Will continue to persue.

I have now donated 4 pints in just over a month and the doctors do not want me to donate anymore. They have asked me to come back in at least 2 weeks to see if I can donate again. Her blood bank is still low so any blood donations would be appreciated. Thank You

I'll get over there to give in the next couple of days. Have you tried calling into the Show or sending Ron an e-mail? This will probably get more exposure if they push it on air.
