Three years in the making, AMERICAN: The Bill Hicks Story brings the tale of one of modern culture’s most iconic heroes to the big screen.

Much more than a comedian, Bill Hicks was and still is an inspiration to millions. His timeless comedy tackled the contradictions of America and modern life head on. But his unique gift was to tease apart the essence of religion, the dangers of unbridled government power and the double standards inherent in much of modern society, using nothing but his hilarious ideas and the uncompromising observational style that continues to resonate with successive generations.

Like many who have a strong sense of their place in history, Hicks left a large unseen legacy; his collection of video recordings and hundreds of photographs and these became the starting point for this feature-length animated documentary.

...Bill’s story is told by the 10 people who knew him best; his family and closest friends who recount the twists & turns of his life with a freshness that hasn’t faded in 15 years. From Kevin Booth, Bill’s talented lifelong friend to the Outlaw Comics who introduced Bill into their heady world of drugs & alcohol, to photographer David Johndrow who perceptively captures some of the most revelatory moments of Bill’s life, each speaker is a compelling narrator who still carries a piece of Bill with them and, woven together, they bring a palpable sense of Bill’s presence to the screen.

Coming soon.

I would have loved to have Bill around for the George W. Bush years.

Hell, I'd love to hear him on the Teabaggers now.

He was brilliant. I always wonder what he'd be doing now. I think the world would be a better place if he were alive today.

i'd like to think he'd remain that guy we all hold to such high esteem

but he'd manage to disappoint -- there'd be a messageboards that claimed he sold out, and used to be better ... he'd make some awful kids movie or terrible sitcom ... he'd make some harsh remarks about bush & 9/11 ... he'd disappear to london's east-end and setup shop in some theatre ... he'd align himself with alex jones, make insane youtube movies ... after completely ostracizing the rest of his fanbase, he'd reappear as a new carlin-like elder statesman

I could never get a copy of his biography, so I'm happy to see this.

It is funny you say that. There is a documentary about the Branch Dividian Cult in Waco on Infowars from the early 90s with Bill Hicks in it.

He'd be aligned with Alex Jones since he already was aligned with his group when he was alive.

I was just a tyke during Hicks' heyday, so maybe someone could fill me in...

Was this part of some character, or was he really that much of a self-important gasbag?

I've gotta disagree with some of that.
He probably would be living overseas, and probably would be saying douchey Alex Jones type shit, but I don't think he'd be doing shit movies. It seemed he always just wanted to be a stand up comedian.

Guess people translate things differently. I took it to mean that us as a society tend to belittle those that have been there before us, and those that encourage people tothink for themselves rather then believe everything that is fed to them. Something I happen to have always believed.

Seems relevant now more then ever.

They must have restocked it in paperback. When I was actively looking for it they had sold out of the hard cover, and I assumed they weren't doing a paperback because it didn't have a very big run.
