Just to get serious for a sec, I haven't been to see a movie since The Watchmen came out and before that it might have been years since I saw anything.
This 3D bullshit isn't making me rush back into the theaters. Give me some substance, not another fucking gimmick. Yea I'm sure it looks cool and adds to the visuals, but it will do nothing to help Hollywood's horrible track record of shit movies.
Fuck off 3D.

It's a scam that's going to eventually hurt the movie industry.
People are currently going primarily because of the hype. Since there's not that many movies in that format, a family of four can justify spending $70 to see it as a special event.
Unfortunately, the movie industry is not going to learn the lessons of the music industry. When CD's first came out, the justification for the higher prices was because they were more expensive to produce. As costs lowered, though - down to about $.50/disc - consumer prices didn't decrease. That fact, coupled with their ignorance of the internet, led to almost everybody just stealing music.
That's exactly what's going to happen with 3D. The costs will come down as the studios and theaters perfect the format, but the prices will remain at $17.50 or so. The typical consumer will eventually go to fewer films as the novelty wears off.

I think 3D itself is just fine, and its use will be fine-tuned to yield a more immersive overall movie. In Avatar, I really liked it on the live action scenes (the one that sticks out is where the commander is lecturing several rows of leathernecks). I will definitely give a live action 3D movie another shot.
I didn't like it on the CGI-heavy scenes because I think CGI still looks like shit, and 3D CGI just looks like 3D shit.
The glasses situation absolutely has to change, though. I hate wearing glasses anyway, and I especially hate it if they're going to take a bright, brilliant picture and make it so dim and muddy.

I adjusted them within the first five minutes and got fucking popcorn butter all over the lens. I missed the first ten minutes of the movie trying to clean the goddamned things off.
The cinemas would be stupid to not continue to produce 3D movies. There are so many pirates in the world who refuse to go the the cinema because they can enjoy the same experience at home. If you add 3D to the production you will probably get more viewers. Watching the same 3D at home, and enjoying the same quality costs too much money.
I'm sure the fad will lose popularity, but I think the movie industry would be stupid to not give the viewers the option to watch an epic movie in 3D.

Can be quite an effective storytelling aid when in the right hands. Very excited about its long-term potential. Unfortunately, the short-term market is going to be oversaturated with inferior pale imitators where the dimensional footage was committed to as a post-production afterthought purely for financial reasons instead of artistry. Alice had horrible 3D, but it was still a monster hit because of Burton/Depp and the iconic source material. I'd be surprised if Clash of the Titans fared nearly as well, even though it's remade from a famous title and stars a young actor with veritable heat. Cartoons like Dragon are always going to be profitable, with or without 3D.

Clash will do well automatically with people who grew up on the original I think. Most people I know from my generation seem pretty pumped about Clash and Tron. I can't see how they both wont do well with kids either. Whether either one is decent at all or benefits from 3D, who knows, but I think they'll do well.

I saw on Attack of the Show yesterday that starting this weekend they are raising the prices of 3D movies. An extra $4 for regular 3D and $6 for Imax 3D.
What a bunch of cocksuckers.

I see lots of 3-D movies and I like the format but a lot of times it's a waste.
I just saw The Croods (which is a stupid title) and enjoyed it quite a bit.
I'm not really a fan of most animated films and this one's story and such is not great but the visuals are some of the best in 3-D since Avatar.
I know some people still don't like the glasses and get headaches and whatever.
Things like Life of Pi and this show the real potential....to be transported out of your reality.

Paulo I believe you're a completist, right? You want to see everything that's good, or maybe see everything just so you can make up your own mind.
Where do you think this idea started? Does it come from pre home video days when you had to catch a movie while it was in the theater or wait for a revival of it, so people were afraid they'd miss an opportunity? And the volume of stuff you've seen works as your credentials.
Or did it start with home video when you really could see everything, and the opportunity to be a completist came about? Were people more ok with the idea that they weren't going to see everything that was good when it was good for them back when they really didn't have the ability to see everything.
Or did it start with the internet, when you really really could see everything, at any time and place, with no effort, and then immediately broadcast your opinion to everyone you know?
I'm realizing I'm an incompletist. It's not my job to see everything I'm supposed to like as soon as I have the opportunity, if at all. It's nice to say "oh I haven't seen that" and not have to be in the conversation.
thepaulo

It is impossible to be a completist as much as I would like to.
I estimate the amount of movies produced to be somewhere in between 5 and 10 million.
If someone spent all their time in a long lifetime watching movies, you would not be able to watch 100,000.
And that doesn't take into account seeing movies multiple times and Tv shows and now...the freaking internet.
The internet is a distraction for the purist even though it can make things more available.
The desire definately comes from the pre-internet days.

Your Life is a movie is a real thing to me. It has been for the over 20 years that it was my motto or slogan.
You live your life and the best chance you have to get insight to other lives is movies...
good movies...but even bad movies.
People will say books, which is fair enough but I don't have to tell you that the two experiences are completely different.
We can talk to people and if we care enough we'll learn a little bit.
Watching movies is simply the easiest way to learn about life on this planet (and other planets maybe).
We only have a 100 or so years of film history, but still there's a lot to learn.

Humanities intrinsic need to undertake impossible feats, good or bad? On one hand it pushes you forward, on the other hand it can turn into obsession. If you did learn everything about humanity you would posess a level of knowledge you would cease to be human. The superman is no longer a man. Is perfecting the human an act of love or hate of humanity?

Art is born from inperfection because we are so limited.
Being elitist assumes we have achieved greatness.
We have not. We can love humanity for it's imperfections but I still want us to advance.
I believe humanity is nothing but potential.
That's another way of saying we are shit waiting to be molded or waiting to become part of
something bigger, better, more beautiful, more benevolent.
When we have reached the point of total love and peace I will feel better.
The average person will say I'm full of shit and that is the problem.

Stop molding your shit, for starters, you'll catch something.
Elitist implies class and superiority, hubris, greed for status and power, elitism is a flaw and imperfection. Benevolence requires imperfection too, suspending your own self interest for the betterment of others, it requires people in need and people with excess.
Total love and peace is acheived two ways. Through uniformity or acceptance. Uniformity is impossible, all things are entropic. When you put a bunch of like things together the scale at which they examine their differences just becomes magnified. The more unlike things are put together the less minutia of difference matters. Uniformity is counteractive to acceptance. But difference breeds conflict, conflict brings resolution, resolution becomes acceptance. You turn out better getting happy about your imperfection.

Difference breeds conflict. Conflict may bring resolution but not all the time and not for long.
Acceptance of differences is the goal but it is rarely achieved.
We all process our love of things and people differently.
Elitism implies exclusion. It is not benevolent.
Power has the potential to be benevolent but it is nearly always corrupted.
Great power is more likely to breed indifference than benevolence.
Ultimate power would bring benevolence because there is no fear.
As far as molding shit, I leave that to performance artists.
