A South Korean naval ship sunk Friday after possibly being hit by a North Korean torpedo and several sailors were killed, South Korean media reported.

A South Korean warship later fired at an unidentified vessel towards the north, indicating a possible attack, and the South's presidential Blue House was holding an emergency security meeting, the Yonhap news agency said.

“The ship appears to have begun sinking after an explosion at the rear of the ship,” Yonhap quoted the South Korean Navy saying in a statement. “We have been unable to find the exact cause of the incident as of this moment.”

The incident comes as destitute North Korea is facing pressure to end its year-long boycott of international nuclear disarmament talks, where it can win aid to prop up its broken economy in exchange for reducing the security threat it poses.

If it turns out to be an NK torpedo, that's a pretty overt act of war, no?

It was a North Korean torpedo (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/asia_pacific/10129703.stm)

A North Korean submarine's torpedo sank a South Korean navy ship on 26 March causing the deaths of 46 sailors, an international report has found.

Investigators said they had discovered part of the torpedo on the sea floor and it carried lettering that matched a North Korean design.

Pyongyang rejected the claim as a "fabrication" and threatened war if sanctions were imposed, say reports.

China has urged both countries to show restraint.

A North Korean defence spokesman said the country would "respond to reckless countermeasure with an all-out war of justice", the state KCNA news agency reported.

Of course you realize, this means war!

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea said Thursday that South Korea fabricated evidence implicating the North in a torpedo attack in order to pick on the North and any attempt at retaliating for the warship's sinking would be answered with "all-out war."

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak vowed "stern action" for the attack after a multinational investigation issued its long-awaited results Thursday, concluding the North fired a torpedo that sank the Cheonan navy ship March 26 near the Koreas' tense sea border.

"If the (South Korean) enemies try to deal any retaliation or punishment, or if they try sanctions or a strike on us .... we will answer to this with all-out war," Col. Pak In Ho of North Korea's navy told broadcaster APTN in an exclusive interview in Pyongyang.

An international civilian-military investigation team said evidence overwhelmingly proves a North Korean submarine fired a homing torpedo that caused a massive underwater blast that tore the Cheonan apart. Fifty-eight sailors were rescued from the frigid Yellow Sea, but 46 perished in the South's worst military disaster since the Korean War.

Wouldn't a covert air strike on an NK military installation be an appropriate response?

Even tell China and Russia we are going to do it or is that naive?

I believe the U.S. still has about 670,000 troops in South Korea. Has the President said anything about this attack? The Secretary of State? The Secretary of Defense? Anyone?

Oops, 670,000 South Korean troops. You're right, why should the President (or the Secretary of State or the Secretary of Defense) make a statement if there are less than 30,000 U.S. troops there. My apologies.

We should start swinging our dicks and talking tough even though we have zero chance to actually do anything since we're already fighting two wars and NK can likely get at least a million people into combat! Great idea! If NK actually wants in invade SK there's not much the U.S can do! Bottom line is that we have to avoid a war with NK however we can!

Let China get off of its fat ass and do something!

Because the whole thing involves China. And Russia. And Japan. And (to a lesser extent) Iran.

The situation is "precarious" (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/asia_pacific/10147297.stm)

After talks in China, Hillary Clinton urged countries in the region to contain "the highly precarious situation created by North Korea".

Earlier, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak froze trade with Pyongyang, vowing to punish those who carried out the attack, which killed 46 sailors.

North Korea says it will retaliate.

The country's main newspaper called the investigation an "intolerable, grave provocation".

President Lee addressed the nation on television to announce Seoul would no longer tolerate "any provocative act by the North and will maintain a principle of proactive deterrence".

The US administration endorsed the move.

"US support for South Korea's defence is unequivocal, and the president has directed his military commanders to co-ordinate closely with their Republic of Korea counterparts to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression," a White House statement said.

South Korea says it will refer the North to the UN Security Council in response to the sinking of the Cheonan in March.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he expected serious measures to be taken by the Security Council once Seoul brought the matter to its attention.

Especially since North Korea doesn't fart without China's permission. I'm hoping against hope this isn't beyond diplomacy, but it seems like there's just too much sabre-rattling coming from both sides.

The whole thing is blowing up again (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/24/world/asia/24korea.html?src=mv)

SEOUL, South Korea — North and South Korea exchanged artillery fire on Tuesday after dozens of shells fired from the North struck a South Korean island near the countries’ disputed maritime border, South Korean military officials said. Two South Korean soldiers were killed, 15 were wounded and three civilians were injured, said Kiyheon Kwon, an official at the Defense Ministry.

The South Korean military went to “crisis status,” and fighter planes were put on alert but did not take off. South Korean artillery units returned fire after the North’s shells struck South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island at 2:34 p.m., said Mr. Kwon, adding that the North also fired numerous rounds into the Yellow Sea. News reports said dozens of houses were on fire, and TV footage showed large plumes of black smoke spiraling from the island.

And like the old soldier in that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away,
an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the sight to see that duty.
