Truckers kill over 4,000 people every year. That doesn't even count all the serial murders (http://articles.latimes.com/2009/apr/05/local/me-serialkillers5). They are also consistently the shittiest callers on talk radio. It is clear truckers have to be stopped.

The answer? Autonomously controlled trucks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driverless_car).

Not only will thousands of lives be saved, but the cost of trucking will dramatically decrease, leading to savings on nearly every good we buy. Plus, by eliminating the inefficiencies of human driving, AC use, etc.; the fuel economy will improve, making it a more environmentally benign industry.

i can't begin to imagine the cost of the infrastructure to create autonomous trucking, especially with the amount of goods/product they move on a daily basis.

also, what are we going to do with the elimination of even more (decent paying) jobs in our economy? especially with truckers, they are the brightest bulbs in bunch, doesn't seem like they would have the skills or know-how to do much else.

i like the idea, just don't seeing it being feasible. at least not in the time frame you are talking.

The infrastructure doesn't have to change at all. The direction things are moving, thanks to stuff like DARPA, is that the car will be able to sense its surroundings without the need for any centralized control.

As for the jobs, it's going to be a change, just like with any other technological progress since Watt got the ball rolling.

i guess infrastructure was the wrong word to use. all of the equipment, software, etc.

and just because it's a computer driving the truck, doesn't mean there won't be accidents. computers fail too.

Obviously no system will reach perfection, but it's hard to believe it could be worse than our current one.

I mean the car won't fall asleep. It won't get drunk. It won't say that it's too busy to spend time with you. And it would die to protect you. Of all the cars that came over the years, this thing, this machine, is the only thing that measured up. In an insane world, it is the sanest choice.

Shit.
Nevermind.

Actually, a lot of the individual pieces are already available equipment. GPS, cameras, laser sensors, etc...BMW and Lexus already offer hands-free parking.

Is this a serious post? I can never tell with you.

Rail clearly has its usefulness, and it is being utilized where it's the best option (mostly coal, chemicals and farm products). It should be obvious that it's frequently not the best option, due to its static route.

Tons of info here: http://www.bts.gov/publications/freight_in_america/

Nice chart dick......now find one that shows who caused the accident. I bet you'd find over half of the accidents were started by the car. Yes trucks are big and kill people, lots of things kill people, sorry bout that.
Most truck drivers drive over 100,000 miles a year and don't put a scratch on their truck, you think you could do that. I don't.

StanUpshaw
03-27-2010, 09:42 AM
The chart also doesn't show the societal damage done by truckers with the meth culture they're responsible for, the STDs they spread to every lot lizard, all of the murders and child molesting that their itinerant lifestyle allows...it goes on and on.

What did a truck driver fuck your girl? Sorry bet you don't have one. Did a truck driver fuck your mother??
Guess you didn't know truck drivers by law are randomly piss tested, most have nothing to do with lot lizards, and as a whole are not a bunch of killers.
I'm not saying truck drivers are perfect, but you can find these problems in any job.
By the way......the computer your looking at right now,you wouldn't have it if it wasn't for a truck.

Obsolete? Absolutely.

In the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles that I've driven (a car), I think I could count the bad experiences with truckers and other large vehicles on one hand. As opposed to the bad ones with other cars which are probably in the thousands. Sure, there are a lot more cars out there percentage-wise, but still, I think it's very unfair to try to smear truckers like some of these posts have.

Not sure where your meth culture comes from, as I understand less than 1% use.....its just to dangerous.
As for autonomous units. What happens when its time to chain, unchain.....do you even want to discuss downgrades......and federaly required daily pre and post trip inspections. Multiply by 4 for hazmat loads. Say a sensor fails( sensors fail frequently often associated with brakes) and neglects to down shift at the apex of a grade, and the uninspected brake is over heated.....even if the unit shut down autonomously , it still would be unable to stop.
I'm sorry you had a problem with a trucker, maybe you should meet some more so you'll average out.

I'm with Stan. Truckers drive me insane on the roads. The 15 minute uphill pass on the interstate is infuriating enough, but why do it when you see me coming up on the left? I guess you just know I'll slam on the brakes if I want to live.

I want to add to this good point.......I want to say to any trucker.......If you are such Pro drivers ????Why do you pass when you know that a on ramp is coming up , and you had 2 miles to get set in your lane:wallbash:
