MARVEL by a lot. DC is crap minus the new Green Arrow written by Kevin Smith. My favorite Marvel books are: Deadpool(mixes humor & violence,a damn good book especially the first 30 issues), Wolverine(The best its been in years. Back to the bloodthirsty, adamantium laced Wolverine.), Punisher(Ennis' Punisher is the absolute sickest. Look for his work on Preacher, a very twisted Vertigo/DC book.), Uncanny X-Men(This month the absolute final Magneto appearance. Buy it & the X-Men books last month for the Eve Of Destruction storyline), Mutant X (check it out, a pretty cool series starring Havok in a screwed up world where heroes are villains & vice versa.)Spiderman has been pretty good lately, maybe the better writing is so they don't kill off the franchise while the movie being made (it has been pretty bad for a year or two). They need some good tie-ins big time, the X-Men movie's tie-ins were shitty. Check out CHAOS! Comics, they make the best horror comics around. Evil Ernie, Lady Death, Chastity, Homicide(my little used name on the O&A board), Smiley the Psychotic Button(Evil Ernie's sidekick that got spun off in his own series of one shots), Purgatori & a number of other cool characters. Chaos books are pretty bloody & can be pretty graphic. Their most screwed up comic out now is Insane Clown Posse. Best Marvel characters: Venom, Carnage, Sabretooth, Deadpool & Apocalypse.

There is no doubt that Marvel wins. That is why the entire franchise shows up in a fighting game and DC doesn't.

From the 70's to early 90's, Marvel. When Marvel went for style over substance in the mid 90's, the books turned from suck to blow. At the same time, DC was changing to more mature storytelling. So now, the only Marvel books that are even comprehensible without a roadmap to 30 years of continuity are the Ultimate line. So I now read 3 Marvel books, a few indies and the rest DC.

Marvel definitely. They came out with more popular characters, better characters and had better storytelling (at least in the past). Superman was always overrated. He had it too easy and very, very few powerful villains. Batman is much better but MArvel is still best.

You can't beat Superman if you want your heroes indestructable, kick ass and with the greatest number of cool powers.

You can't beat Batman for a well written profile of the dual nature of a psyche in torment.

The timeless debate!

If you're talking about best overall publisher, DC has truly iconic characters, and they've given us the greatest / coolest comic character of ALL time - Batman. But most of their characters can be too iconic, and lack a human quality to them. Marvel's characters are all personal, and have that human side to them. Marvel gets the edge, I think, since their characters and stories are a bit more real, in the sense that the plots are built upon characters who we can somewhat relate to.

But if your asking about comic book quality, Marvel wins this hands down. For most of the 90s, Marvel sucked the meat missile rather emphatically, but ever since Joe Quesada was named EIC (and actually a bit before that, it started when he was hired to do their Marvel Knights lineup), the company has consistently put out a fantastic product. They go out of their way to hire some of the best writers / artists in the business today, and the results are paying off. Slowly but surely, the comic business, which many had predicted was in its death throes, is making something of a comeback. DC, on the other hand, remains largely on cruise control with their stories (with the notable exception being the Batman titles, as it seems the creative folks behind that line are never afraid to do innovative and shocking things to keep the product fresh and interesting), and the result is something almost akin to stagnation. As the knock against DC goes, the company exists now solely to develop comic properties to be exploited by their parent company, Time-Warner.

And that is your comic geek editorial for the day.

I still say Marvel. They created more gooder characters. Pretty much all of DC's great characters fit in the Justice League while Marvel itself has like tons of groups of all great heroes (X-Men, F4, Avengers sort of)

I've burnt out a lot on the X-Men because they're always presented as the "racial minority seeking equality".

It doesn't really work as an analogy to modern day racism / prejudice, cause the X-Men are flying around on leerjets and living in a big mansion spending Prof. X's money.

DC has always had supes and batman to bank on, but other than that there is a serious drop off in quality (except for Hitman, which was the greatest comic EVER!!!)

Marvel is consistant in quality all over, and the fact that the titles often crossover to one another creates a universe that feels "more real" to the reader.

besides, who's cooler than spidey?

the batman animated series is probably one of the best tv shows ever. it's dc's crown jewel: a self-made(with lots of old money) hero placed in great storylines done with style and substance.

but batman's got nothing on the xmen. the cartoon was/is mediocre, but the comics were incredible. its got the most compelling cast of characters in the comic universe. the movie was probably the best if not THE best comic movie ever made, and the sequel looks just as promising.

spiderman's cool too, but he gabs like a chick.

I was a huge Marvel fan until I got tired of the phenomenon of, "we need to sell more books, kill off a character, it's ok we can always bring him/her back later" Cyclops was the last straw, I knew he wouldn't stay dead, and it was pointless, so I gave up on Comics altogether....

Though I'm giving the new Transformers book half a shot....

but I never really bothered picking up a DC book, I also thought Marvel was much beter with intergalactuic stories, which peaked with the Infinity Gauntlet, as far as having consistent other-worldly characters...

The Fantastic 4 movie is in production. I am not sure if it has been cast yet. I would take Marvel over DC also. D.C has the Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig of comics(Supes and Batsy), but the Marvel characters are as a whole better. I gave up comics for a while when the Spiderman storyline was destroyed( cloned by a third rate villan)But recently I have read the long awaited Origin of Wolverine which I thought was great.

I've been collecting for 12 years now and DC never much appealed to me. The only DC books I've remember buying are Punisher/Batman, some Miller Batman work, Death of Superman, and some Authority -- if you want to count that.

I grew up the Fantastic Four and came to appreciate the fantasy offered by Marvel and mostly rejected DC's more harsh atmosphere (Vertigo, Batman). Some good creative teams at Marvel really made the difference -- I really enjoyed JM DeMattheis/Bagley on Amazing Spiderman and Hama/Kubert on Wolverine. Now I like Morrison on New X-Men and generally like Bendis, but he is way too overexposed at the moment. With Rucka/Robertson coming Wolverine may once again become a great book.

The biggest change for me regarding comics in the past year has been that I no longer go to the comic shop every week to keep up, but I rather buy as much as I can in trade format.
