April has hardly been the cruelest month. 80 degree weather here in the DC area all week which has motivated me to get my hands dirty and dig in the dirt around my house. My trip to home owners mecca Lowe's left me confused as to mulch. So many choices, chips, shredded, red, brown. What do you recommend?

cypress mulch is shredded and probably keeps the moisture in the best but i'm partial to bark mulch because it looks cooler and doesnt lose its color as fast as other mulches

I'm partial to the Red Cedar. It's color enhanced for great contrast, retains moisture and aromatic to keep critters at bay. Plus it starts to degrade after a year or so, thus enriching the soil and ready for a fresh topping.

thats the worst thing you can use,not only does it lose its color fast(dyes and sun=bad),it adds nothing positive to the soil when it breaks down ,promotes fungii and is a breeding ground for grubs

Same goes for the black dyed mulch. Regular cedar mulch is so much better, and smells nicer. Hardwood mulches can compact and becomes hydrophobic, giving you the opposite effect. Bark chips get kicked out all over and onto walkways and into lawn areas.

I've seen a lot of folks using pine straw as a mulch in the southern states. Nice look and probably get it for free from the right place.

The Home Depots on Long Island sell a brand called Hamptons Estate mulch and all the Long Island housewives buy it up because it say's Hampton on it.

Pine/spruce blend - it keeps a nice brown color through most of the season without dyes and doesn't look quite as ethnic as dyed red cedar mulch.

This is funny, but so fucking true.
