Iron Man 2, opening on May 7, could shatter the first-weekend box-office record of The Dark Knight, according to tracking data.
That's the conclusion of the Los Angeles Times' 24 Frames blog:
According to just-released tracking surveys, director Jon Favreau's second installment in the Marvel franchise is showing astonishing levels of interest and awareness well ahead of its three-day opening next month. There are enough statistical indications to think that the first-weekend gross could top the $158.4-million haul for "Dark Knight", the current record-holder for the biggest (non inflation-adjusted) opening weekend and the gold standard for movie debuts.
The first Iron Man opened to a healthy $98 million weekend in 2008. The Times says that interest is especially strong among women, owing to star Robert Downey Jr.:
Thanks in part to Downey, the Paramount-distributed film is drawing as much (strong) interest among women over 30 as it is among women in their 20s, the tracking surveys show. Males in their teens and 20s are so keen on the film they may as well be dressing up in an iron suit. About the only people who aren't fully sold are teen girls, but there are signs of robustness there too.
Who you got? 158.4 million is the number to beat.

There's a good shot.
Iron Man 2 is a lot like Dark Knight in that it's a sequel to an excellent superhero movie, with established characters.
The advantage iron man 2 has over Dark Knight is that it's "lighter" than DK2.
Also, there's Scarlett.
I don't think it'll beat DK2's total take, but I think it'll get the #1 opening weekend take.
Also, the entire soundtrack is ACDC. That's awesome.

Is it in 3D?
Will one of the stars die before May 7?
If the answer to either of those is Yes, then I believe it will beat DK.

When this comes out I'll watch the first one then go see it. Might as well, there doesn't look like anything great is coming out this summer.

It's not your money. What do you care if some Paramount exec gets to buy a Ferrari next week or a Maybach?

This weekend! Could it happen?
This came out about a month ago:
According to the LA Times, just-released tracking surveys show that IRON MAN 2 is pulling in some off-the-charts numbers that prove it might just be able to take the cake. They claim "astonishing levels of interest and awareness" about the film and not just among slap happy fanboys. Women in their 20s and 30s are tracking surprisingly high for the film, a surprise for a FX-driven superhero film. This is thanks in no small part to Robert Downey, Jr. whose appeal is so strong he's dragging in all four quadrants (a term used to describe a movie that appeals to almost everyone: young, old, male and female).
If they give it enough screens (I'm sure they are), I think it's gonna take down TDK. Even my mom liked the first one. The last comic book movie I remember her saying anything good about was Spider-Man, so Iron Man must have a lot of mass appeal.

I hate these movies and hope it flops royally. Driving Downey back into acting and Scarlett into porn.
The new batmans were good. But most blockbusters are not worth a second viewing. "Yeah special effects!!"

Driving Downey back into acting
I hate to say it, but boy do I agree. I thought he was a good choice for Tony Stark and whatnot, but I fucking loved him in Two Girls and a Guy, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is probably my favorite underrated film.
My kid loves these Iron Man movies so they're good for the audience they're shooting for, but I'd rather see Downey playing a depressed down-on-his-luck soiciopath than an ass-kicking Sherlock Holmes with explosions (fuck you, Guy Ritchie)

I dont see it beating Dark Knight. Its definitely not gonna flop but I dont see all this "awareness" they are talking about. I remember EVERYONE talking about going to see TDK the week before it opened. I havent heard a peep from people on this one. I mean, Iron Man just isnt as iconic as Batman.
I still think it will do really well, I just dont think it will knock of TDK.

I just don't get why actors give up acting. They get these kid roles and never leave them. Take the money, but then do a real acting job. The money buys you freedom to do what you want, it should't handcuff you.
Maybe they fear trying and failing, iron man makes him critic proof, since it isn't a real acting job they can't critique his acting. Whatever!

<sigh>... Yeah, I don't know either... It just sucks... I'm not sure why now that he's Iron Man he can't go out and do a couple of decent adult movies, keep his acting skills sharp. The best I can come up with is that he has all this talent, but has no real love for what he does and is just happy he can end his career sliding down a pile of money. I mean, there are plenty of people out there that have amazing innate talents for things they just don't have any passion for. As good an actor as he is, maybe he just doesn't care to put that much effort into it unless he's living paycheck to paycheck.

RFv3 took the rights to title boxes and exclamation points when the exodus happened. I think they got the colons too, punctuation not organs.

Looks like it may fall short, unless a lot of mother's want to see Iron Man.
It's not looking like a record-breaker but Iron Man 2 is still destined for a pretty fantastic weekend. Early reports indicate the Robert Downey Jr.-starrer pulled in over $51 million Friday in its 4,380 locations. (That includes the $7.5 million earned from its midnight shows.) The number far surpasses the $38 million earned on Iron Man's opening day two years ago, but falls beneath The Dark Knight which opened to $67 million, also in 2008. Even though Paramount Pictures released the movie, Iron Man 2 marks the first film to be released from Marvel Entertainment since Disney purchased the comic book company at the beginning of the year. »

Iron Man 2 falls short of Dark Knight, and Spiderman 3, and Twilight: New Moon, and Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest, with $133 million. (http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/37051272/ns/today-entertainment/)
