NEW YORK (AP) — Late-night mainstay Conan O'Brien is headed to TBS to resume his comedic duties with a talk show expected to debut in November, the network says.
The program will air Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. Eastern, shifting TBS' "Lopez Tonight," starring George Lopez, to midnight.
Monday's surprise announcement hit the same day O'Brien starts a two-month, nationwide comedy tour in Eugene, Ore., amid persistent reports that he was likely to claim Fox as his new late-night home.
Barring Fox, syndication was widely considered O'Brien's most likely option. Few if anyone mentioned TBS as a plausible destination.
O'Brien began serious talks with TBS just last week, the network said.
"In three months, I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable," O'Brien said in a tongue-in-cheek-toned statement. "My plan is working perfectly."
O'Brien left NBC in January after hosting "The Tonight Show" for just eight months, as his ratings plunged from those of his longtime "Tonight" predecessor, Jay Leno, who reclaimed the hour. Until last June, O'Brien had followed Leno as host of "Late Night" since 1993.
OBrien's parting deal bars him from appearing on TV until September.
That really blows for him.
Not to mention him dicking over George Lopez in almost the same way he got dicked over.

I'm guessing that's not where he hoped he'd land when he played hardball with NBC.

Conan should be glad to be on cable. He can live on their salary and he may get more freedom than the networks give. Why would someone want to deal with network censorship now? Tonight show has not mattered for years. It's a dying brand.

I'm with you. When I first read the headline, I thought to myself,
"Oh. Cable. That sucks for Conan."
But that was immediately followed by,
"Oh! Cable! That's awesome for the show!"
The reality is that I never watched passed week one when he got the Tonight Show. I can definitely see myself having maintained interest in a show where he'll have so much freedom.

I really feel sorry for him and the $35-45 million he got from NBC when he left.

I agree, but if we're just talking artistic freedom, the real location for him would have been HBO.

I'm sure his multi-million dollar contract doesn't hurt.

I was one of the few who thought he should have just stayed with the Tonight Show and let it run from 12:05-1:05. To go to TBS? It doesn't make much sense, wouldn't he be better off syndicating a show? I'm sure in NYC, Channel 9 or 11 would have put him on at whenever he wanted (11 or 11:30).
I wonder if Max Weinberg will come along. He didn't want to move to LA in the first place for the Tonight Show. I recall an interview with him where he said he wasn't going to sell his house in NJ even after he bought a house in CA.

Actually, according to Gawker, this whole thing was Lopez's idea.
George called Conan personally to set this up. Lopez saw that Conan could be his lead-in rather than Beastmaster or "generic Tyler Perry sitcom 14"
If he didn't get 40 million in severance for leaving, I'd say Coco is retarded.
Oh well, enjoy obscurity.

In this age of cable, I have to imagine that syndication would have been the worst option possible.

In the DVR world I don't give a shit what channel he's on, at least with TBS you can swear a little and the Masturbating Bear can be showcased.

I recently fell asleep while watching something that came on before Lopez. I ended up having weird dreams in which Lopez was constantly talking and saying stupid things. Every time I tried to get away, he'd still be there.

The Masturbating Bear is the intellectual property of NBC though Conan can still play his theme music - go figure. (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2010/0121101conan1.html)

He will own everything that he does on TBS. Maybe none of the other offers included that. I can see that making it worth it to him in the long run.
