I had a GPS up for auction on eBay and I always have in my selling instructions that I won't sell to international bidders because I have gotten fucked in the past. Anyway, I get a message that it sold for my asking price and the guy paid and a few minutes later get a message from him saying that he only read my instructions for international bidders after the fact. It turns out he is a soldier on a military base in Europe and he said he would pay the difference to make it all okay. Well, I asked a few people and they all say to charge him, but I feel bad because here he is risking his life for us and I know they don't really make a lot of money in the service.
The GPS is a few years old and I bought a new one bacause I like the new features, and figure I would sell it to keep it from collecting dust in my house. I don't really need the cash, so why not?
I have respect for the military and my gut tells me to eat the money for him.

What would you do?

He said he realized that my charges were for domestic shipping and he must know it will be more to ship it to him overseas, which was my whole reason why I stopped shipping international.

I thought domestic rates apply when you're sending something to an APO address.

He's only in Europe. Make him pay up.

you are correct OTB

if the guy is really a
serviceman in Europe
he will have an APO address
and it will be same freight rate
as shipping to Cleveland!

Go to the post office and find out if it will cost more to send it to him. If it's only a few bucks, cut the guy some slack. It's not like you were planning on getting rich by selling the gps.

And by the way, I don't know any reason that a gps bought in the US wouldn't work anywhere else in the world. The satellite circle the whole globe.

What kind of gps was the old one and what did you upgrade with ?

Geosynchronous satellites have an orbital speed that matches the rotation of the earth, so they're always above the same general area of the earth. The Sirius/XM satellites are like this, but I have no idea about GPS.

THX for confirming.....and fuck Cleveland, I'd rather go to fallujah.

Oh and blowhole, if they buyer doesn't have an APO address it might be a scam (play on the whole patriotism and sympathy for the troops angle) I'd be inclined to have paypal (assuming thats how it was paid for) cancel the transaction and reverse the charges.

Actually the XM satellites are geosynchronous (they appear stationary over the equator) but the sirius satellites circle the earth in a different pattern (north to south I believe).

gps satellites are not geosynchronous, they orbit the earth about 2 times per 24 hours.

A quick check of the Garmin website yielded this :

....GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

Right there^

Send it via the USPS and you are golden.

BTW... If it's APO, it's probably CHEAPER than Cleavland. The largest APO Priority Mail box is only 10 bucks to ship. Make sure you use an APO Priority Mail box. They are free at the post office. You can't ship to an overseas APO with any other box or service.

Positioning the globe sounds really really hard to do.
