They didn't have to save your life, but albums you clutched onto during a bad point in your life, and somehow helped you get through. I have two that I can think of.

I was really depressed about stuff in my life and this album really helped.

When I was 13 I was in the hospital for a week because half my body was paralyzed and they didn't know why. This somehow made it ok to be in the hospital.

The Downward Spiral.

When that album came out, it was during a point in my life where I needed it to channel my inner turmoil. Having something help me give a voice to my bitterness prevented it from eating me alive.

Insane Clown Posse - Bang! Pow! Boom!

It taught me that all the problems that I consume myself with are all just trifles, and that I should appreciate all the beauty and wonder the world has to offer.

That album almost made me kill myself in the early 80's.

Big Lizard in my Backyard - Dead Milkmen

Half Fiction and Ataxia's Alright Tonight- Discount

The Initial Friend EP and Takeoffs and Landings- Rilo Kiley

Catalpa and Escondido by Jolie Holland

And seeing Screeching Weasel last week compelled me to have a conversation I've been tormented about for the last 2 years.

This is what I would play if I needed some uplifting. Although this album was big it might not have been over played on radio. At least I don't recall hearing it from back then or even now. So it won't get old to me.

Christine McVie first solo album as Christine McVie.

One, single album doesn't come to mind at the moment (I'll get back to you on that).

Five years ago was the WORST period of my life. I had to go into the hospital for 2 or 3 weeks. I don't really remember.

Before I went to the hospital, I'd play "Better Things" by The Kinks every single day. I wanted to die; or at least go to sleep and never wake up.

SOME part of me MADE me play that song. Everyday.

I'm still here.

This was a unique record that came out, for me, at just the right time.

The entire album is about cancer.
Some songs are sung from the patient's POV. Others presented from the patient's loved ones perspective. And others are sung from the POV of the cancer itself. It's fascinating.
(It helped that this album SOUNDED exactly like I want records to sound. It's glammy, hooky, poppy, anthemic, arena-rock. Quite the opposite of emo, actually.)

Aaaanyway... this album happened at the exact time in my life when I was dealing with my own cancer. Ya know... hospitals and shit.

I was addicted to every song.

XTC - Drums and Wires

A pretty random choice, as it isn't really much of a "healing" kind of album, but I listened to it an awful lot during the lonely and depressing experience that was my freshman year of college. I used to go for walks at night with this playing on my Discman. It's still my favorite XTC album. It's good!

Won't say why publicly but Hatebreed's Satisfaction is the Death of Desire got me through a lot of shitty, shitty stuff.

I remember when this album came out a kid who I was loosely associated with got diagnosed with cancer. He was a well liked guy, so everyone was talking about it. I remember laying in bed and listening to this record and thinking about that kid, and the whole experience of how traumatic it must be.

A lot of punker-than-thou people hate this record, and the band. Because they made an album about cancer. And they must be incredibly self-obsessed because they wrote songs about cancer.

I hate those people. Best record that came out that year.

GREAT album! I love XTC and have a ton of their stuff but this one has always been my favorite and does get me out of bad moods. Great pick.

NIN's album The Fragile really took me through a depression along with OK Computer from Radiohead.
