Here's Microsoft's chart comparing them:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/default.aspx

For most people, Home Premium should do. If you really need to make sure your XP programs will run fine, get Professional, since that includes "XP Mode", which is actually a virtual machine that runs XP.

I don't think you'll find it where you're getting it, but avoid Windows 7 Starter because that is a piece of shit.

Home Premium will probably suit your needs. Ultimate has a couple of nice features (Remote Desktop and Dynamic Disks), but you may not have a use for those. If price is no option, I'd get Ultimate.

Yeah, it's the way to go if you absolutely must run some key piece of software or hardware in XP, and you can't update the program or driver to work in Windows 7.

And if you buy Home Premium, you can't have XP Mode. It cannot be installed later without updating the entire version of the OS.

I ended up just buying a new vid card and finally got my sytem up and running better than ever. I am going to go with windows 7 professional for the added XP support as soon as I can find a decent price on it. All the comps I have now are 32-bit but I know any future comp I have will most likely be 64-bit so I don't want to buy an OEM windows right away because you don't get both.

Thanks for the links and opinions guys it was very helpful.

My chick's laptop has windows vista and when searching the web all I get is the little red "x" where a png is supposed to display. Doesn't matter whether is the "google" on their homepage or even stuff on rf.net. I've tried the right click show pic, but to no avail. Suggestions? As an aside it's a GIANT sony vaio laptop thats super heavy and the keyboard sucks for old men with chubby fingers.

I fucking hate Dell! Ok... I just reformatted a Dell Dimension 4600 (XP Home) for someone. As always happens with Dell, the restore disc doesn't include the drivers. All I need is the driver for the Ethernet port. I can get the rest of them once I can get the comp online. The Dell site isn't helping me much. I think they have the driver, and it's called R67150.EXE. Problem is, I can't seem to download it with my Windows 7 comp. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong in trying to download it? Or do you know an alternate solution?

Weird. I did that, and when I picked it back up, it had THIS LINK (http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R67150.EXE) on it (in case anyone else has the same problem). Yeah, it's a piece of crap computer, but I'm getting paid to fix it. I don't care if it's a fucking abacus, if I can make money on it.

I have a question about connecting my HDTV to my comp. The comp has an HDMI port. This is what the manual says... "This motherboard comes with dual-VGA output that features different display on 2 monitors at the same time (something I'm already doing) if you connect 2 monitors at the same time if you connect 2 monitors to both the onboard VGA and DVI-D/HDMI out ports."

Actually, I added a video card, so I'm not using the on board ports. This is what I want to know. Can I just connect my HDMI cable to the port on the comp, and have my TV be one of the two monitors?

Yes. I have my laptop hooked up to my tv at all times but through an hdmi splitter so that its easier to decide between the 2. The only think I noticed is when both the tv and my laptop screens are both on at the same time my tv is clearer then the laptop. I believe the computer tries to get the best picture for the tv so is makes the laptop a little less then optimized.

I just tried it, and my TV says no signal on HDMI 2. As I mentioned, I added a video card (which disables the on board video). I figured the HDMI might be separate from the on board VGA and DVI-D, but I think I'm mistaken. I guess I'll try taking out the video card later, to see if that works. I hope that's not the issue. The on board video is pretty good as on board video goes, but I'd still prefer to use the card, which is a bit better.

I believe its part of the on board but the it should work. did you go into the video settings on the computer to see if you can choose to use dual monitors? the very 1st time I hooked my computer up I had problems too.

It's not. That's what I've been saying. The HDMI port is part of the motherboard's on board video. On board video is turned off, when you add a new video (PCI Express) card. Unless there is a way I can turn the HDMI on in the BIOS, and still use the video card, I think my only option is to remove the video card, and just use the on board video.

The on board video is pretty good (especially since I don't do any gaming), but I'm about to start playing around with some video editing soon. I'm not sure if the on board will be good enough for that.

yeah I would just remove it. Why do you change or add a video card? Why not just keep it the way it comes?

The on board is 128MB. The card I added is 512MB, and is supposed to be rated pretty high for photo editing (which I do often). Also, when I added it, I had less RAM (on board video uses your RAM). But I now have 8GB of RAM, so that shouldn't be an issue. I guess I'll just try it, and see if it adversely effects my overall performance.

I guess one more thing that might move me towards going back to the on board is that it's DVI port is DVI-D, meaning I can use a hi def monitor, if decide to get one in the future. Thought the video card is nice, I don't think it supports hi def monitors. On the other side... The only time I'd be using my TV as a monitor, is if I'm watching streaming video from my comp. Time to play around, I guess.

What do you mean by "won't make a smooth copy"?

My guess is one of two things is happening: there's something wrong with the media, or he system's getting bogged down and causing problems.

For the first cause: a disk might play fine with some smudges or a little scratch or two on it, but when you've gotta go in bit by bit like HandBrake does, there can be problems. So make sure it's as clean as possible.

For the second: video encoding is a processor-intensive process, so if other things are running in the background, it could max out the processor and start causing problems. Try doing the encode immediately after a restart, before you run anything else. Also consider disabling any startup items, so that the computer doesn't load a shitload of crap after it restarts.

Is it cutting off at a certain point? If it's the same point every time, then that more strongly suggests the disk is fucked up in some way.

Another possibility is that it is set to lock whenever it goes to sleep or the screensaver kicks in. On the Screen Saver settings page, make sure the "On resume, display logon screen" is unchecked. Also, under Power Options/Advanced settings, make sure "Require a password on wakeup" is set to No.

As long as I can remember, they've had them. It should be a watch battery type one.

God damn Windows 3.1 sucked ass. I remember using 3.1 back then, and I'd try to do something, and I'd just end up saying "Fuck this shit" and I'd go work in DOS. Windows 95 was the first version that was actually fully usable from within the GUI.

Yeah, I've heard about the S95 too, and it's a good camera, but at that price (I'm actually seeing it as $382 on Amazon), you're damn near into SLR territory, which is where you want to go if you're going to get serious with this.

I picked this one up not long ago. It's not the best camera in the world, but it does well for the price: http://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-FinePix-J40-Digital-Camera/dp/B003ZHV70C/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1300075944&sr=1-1

Though, yeah, I'm looking to move up to SLR as soon as I can.

An SLR for 400-500 bucks? The cheapest Canon SLR is the 2-generation old T1i which clocks in around 560 with a kit lens. (new)

If you want a recommendation Knox, if you're looking for the most affordable way to segue into shooting SLR:

1) Buy a broken Canon camera on Ebay.
2) Trade broken Canon camera to Canon as party of their loyalty program.
3) Buy a refurb Canon from the loyalty program. Right now you can get a T2i + kit lens for 512 bucks, which is 250 bucks less than how much it is on Amazon.

If you google Canon Loyalty Program Slickdeals, the thread should pop up.

I been debating whether to send a repair guy out to check out my plasma. I bought it in 2006 a hitachi 42" when tv's were expensive ($3000) and bought the 5 year warrenty for 300 bucks. The tv has actually been repaired twice using the warranty but the problems were much worse.

I had an appointment last week but bailed because the problem was kind of going in and out. The problem is it is a blurry around the edges of things. Like watching golf in HD is the worst, all the edges of the greens have tiny black dots and what not. It is kind of a small issue I guess though, but annoying now that I am focusing on it. Every thing has a blur to it on the edges of things. Even the tv menu it self.

Am I being a dick because I am trying to cash in on my 5 year warranty before it ends in Nov 11'? I am hoping the guy doesn't come out and go, wtf, are you serious the tv is 5 years old what do you expect fag boy.

No. TVs aren't like computers or cell phones; they're supposed to last longer than five years. My Dad has a 36' tube TV he had for 15+ years with a beautiful picture as far as standard defs go, never a problem.

Anyone know of a good hard drive recovery company? Someone I know had their computer crash a while ago. I tried to use an external hard drive enclosure knowing it probably wouldnt work and it didnt. I also have one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-IDE-SATA-S-ATA-2-5-3-5-HD-HDD-Adapter-Cable-/180550148600?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a09a0a1f8#ht_4020wt_1139 I know its similar to an external enclosure but I thought maybe it would work. No matter what I do I cant seem to get his drives to even show up. I have been able to recover laptop hard drives before with an external enclosure or that device but for some reason not these. Does anyone have any idea how to hook it up to the computer and recover some data or something to buy that makes it easy or a place to send it that recovers the files?

FYI these are desktop hard drives, 3.5" ide drives.

A quick follow up to my plasma tv problem. I finally got the tech guy out here to diagnose and order some parts. parts came he put them in didn't fix problem. They decided to replace the TV all together, and will give me like 400 - 500 in store credit at American to find something new. Exactly what i was hoping for! I rarely buy extended warrentys but this one was a life saver.

Now the hard part of finding a new 40-50" TV. First part is deciding if I want to go plasma/lcd/led backlit... Repair guy was raving about the improvements of the LG brand. Bah I have no idea what I want to do.

I assume you mean instructions for replacing the controller board ?

It was a simple process, unscrew a couple of screws, take off the board, swap it to the drive that needs fixing. When I did it there was no soldering involved.

I would guess that the process might differ a lot depending on the hard drive maker/model.

The hard part was finding the drive to cannibalize. I was lucky to find one on ebay.

To be honest I am almost on the edge of not worrying about 1080p. The only thing in 1080p is pretty much blue ray and they look fake on some TV's to me because it is so clear. It is a weird thing but it really irks me out, I was watching hurt locker on blue ray on our 1080p TV and it was terrible. You can see like every little movement of the camera. Watching the same thing on the blue ray player on my 1080i tv it looks really smooth no weirdness. I would be pissed if I paid more for something that just annoyed me.

I mean check out a TV like this. 50" Panasonic plasma its just not 1080p so its cheap, $719

Oh well I really need to get to a store and check out some TV's to get a feel for it, its tough to notice some things just by comparing online.

Jaw, what i think you are referring to is the "soap opera" effect.

A lot of TV's that cant handle the correct processing of blu-ray contaent give it that mush, smotthy look.

I know what your are talking about and it turns me off as well.

With that Size and Price range your best bet will be to go Plasma for the best PQ.

Other than not really knowing your uses for the TV, that is what i would recommend. as for which brand and model, stop over at AVSforum.com and put up a thread.

They are pretty friendly over there.

Nice I was looking for a term for it, soap opera effect.

It also seems like that problem is only seen on 120hz and 240 hz LCD/LED's. So maybe I would be safe with a 1080p plasma.

My TV use is exclusively through uverse HD cable box and PS3 gaming. I rarely watch blu-rays. I watch all my movies either streaming from computer to Ps3 or most often just transfer via flash drive to ps3. I rarely d/l blu ray rips.

I don't think I can go wrong with a plasma, I am going to focus on them for now, 46"-50" $700-850. I am pretty excited to go TV shopping. Unfortunately the only place I can buy is from American(store credit), but they have usually have a great selection and competitive price.

Im talking about a slide down screen that comes over the tv. Like a blind for a window but it would be made out of the same thing the glasses are so that no one needs to wear the glasses the tv itself would be 3d when the screen is pulled down.

4 glasses arent alot. What if you having a SB party or movie night with friends, family and the kids? Thats my point about a pull down screen that goes over the tv screen so no one needs glasses. Bah I can't decide. It's almost like I just want to have that ability if I want to use it in the future. I know I would rarely even see much in full 1080p format except some things on my ps3 and blu-rays(which usually just piss me off because of the ultra-clarity). A lot of games don't even go up to 1080p format though, 2 out of the 5 games I have now do, mlb the show and black ops.

I am going to see some in person and see what I think.

the point is, even if you have a game that is 1080, do you think it will really be that huge of a difference or noticeable when you play it on a 720 tv? if not then go with the better price. I dont think its a big deal and other then watching an nfl game, I have never noticed the difference between the 2. And even that difference isnt a huge difference imo.

A freind is buying the IPAD2 so he has offered to give me his old IPAD. I dont know much about IPADS, but i do know that i cannot afford data plans for 25 or 30 a month.

Can i use the IPAD without a data plan? what do i need to know?

As long as you have a wi-fi network you just connect to that. No need to buy a data plan at all, unless you need internet on the go. If you don't have access to wi-fi then you will be out of luck for anything requiring internet access.

The cool thing, to, is if you do want it, you can sign up for it right on the iPad, and pay for a month in advance. And if you don't want it after that month, you don't have to pay again.

That's what's killing the Android tabs so far: too many of them are tied to long-term contracts. And a device like a tablet is never going to be your primary mobile device, probably; you aren't necessarily going to carry it around all the time, and you may not ever need to use it in locations that don't already have wi-fi. So people don't necessarily want to have to add yet another $30-$40 month bill for a service that they may not use.

I'm pretty sure DirectTV does some PPV movies in 1080p.

Your right, although it is just on demand or ppv type movies.

DirecTV only shows movies in 1080p and they broadcast a 1080p/24 signal. There are a lot of really good 1080p HDTVs that will recognize this 1080p/24 signal. A Sharp Aquos does not recognize it. For more info on this issue, check out http://forums.directv.com They have some great tech guys to answer questions like this.

Pretty sure Dish network does as well.

Btw I went to check out the S series and X series panasonic plasmas and they looked like shit compared to the others in the store. The higher priced ST series panasonic plasma looked amazing though at bestbuy, but they don't have them in stock yet where my store credit is.

I am thinking about LED or plasma now too, taking a break though, I thought looking for a tv would be fun, not so much...

You should ask the rep's if the TV's are calibrated at that american store.

If they are out of the box setting, they will look worse than if you were to calibrate them....or adjust them.

If they can give you the remote, go ahead and go into the setting and adjust some things. You'll easily make the picture better.

Check out the model numbers and go to avsforum, or search for settings for the TV's on google, then adjust them to that.

Best Buy, I believe, if the TV is in the "Magnolia" section, has ISF people come in and calibrate the TV's so they look their best.

Finally found the perfect TV for me.

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666297844&XID=O:46ex520:dg_tv_gglsrch:bravmod_brm-kdl46ex520_p_6442100044_46ex520prod

American surprised me and came up big giving me nearly 800 in credit for the old tv under warranty. I was expecting like 500.

Tonight was perfect because at American I could tune to the NHL games to test motion blur between the tvs, that was the only thing I was afraid of about getting a 60hz was for sporting events. The sony was killing the competition by comparison on the hockey game it made my choice so easy. I was trying to avoid a 120hz LED that would give me that too real look, soap opera effect bullshit, but still be ultra clear.

Watching the hurt locker on blu-ray right now it is fucking sick (glad I went 1080p), so much better than the samsung LED I have. Loving this tv even the small things like menu organization, menu speed, remote, start up speed(fast as fuck), are great. K ill stop gushing, but it is one sweet ass picture.

I recently got my first GPS unit (Garmin Nuvi 855). In addition to it's GPS functions, I'm using it to play my Audible shows of Ron and Fez. The FM transmitters on US products sucks balls, so I'd prefer to use the line out jack. This works fine with my XM, and my other MP3 player, but I can't get it to work on the Nuvi. The jack works for headphones, but it won't play any sound when I connect it to my car stereo. Any ideas as to why this is?

Turns out the "line in" does work. It's just super quiet, therefore useless. Next problem...

My Internet has been working fine during the day. Three nights this week (twice tonight), within a half hour after turning on my downstairs computer, I lose my connection for the whole house. If I reset the modem, and restart my comp, it works again. Is the modem going bad, or is my comp doing something to the modem?

Depending on the brand, your mouse may be very sensitive the Wi-Fi traffic. I found that adjusting the power settings and channel of my wireless card (network adapter properties) helped a little bit. Also, placing the mouse and receiver as close together as possible helped. I was using an older Microsoft wireless mouse and a 2.4 GHz 802.11n adapter. A new Logitech mouse worked without any issues whatsoever though.

Faxing over voip how do you do it?

I read somewhere that many of the fax machines now have voip settings? Is that true or do you need some sort of adapter or do you need to set the fax manually in some other way?

Im looking for faxing specifically over a nettalk device but I would guess any voip settings would be fine. I did searches for fax machines that are meant to fax over voip but I get nothing which I found odd. I would think that would be something listed or talked about directly in the fax machine listing as a selling point or specification like hdmi would be listed if buying a computer now a days!

Can I send and receive faxes using the TK6000 or DUO?
Yes, you can use a fax machine. If you are keeping a landline just for your fax, get rid of it!

Faxing
Please note that faxing with the DUO or TK6000 is on a best effort basis.

In order to improve the success rate with faxing, you may perform the following changes on your Fax Machine.

#1. Lower your BAUD rate on your fax to the lowest possible setting. We recommend 9600 bps.

#2. Turn OFF the ECM setting on your fax. Many fax machines have this setting set to ON by default.

#3. Set your paper quality/resolution to standard instead of fine or high quality.

You can also attempt to open port 6000 on your router to try and improve your faxing performance.

I think this was discussed before but I really dont remember and I searched but couldnt find anything so maybe 1 of you tech geniuses can help.

When buying ram/memory it seems like the best deal is usually on ebay. My problem is I never know what is the exact memory that willl work because there seems to be so much that is the same and so much is different about ram that I get confused.

For example. I have a laptop that you cant seem to do a search in ebay or anywhere for its ram except crucials site. This is what the crucial site says.

Memory:
DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-10600
Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 8GB
Slots: 2
Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-10600 with a maximum of 4GB per slot.*

Then they have ram for sale and when I click on the ram that comes up this is what it says at the top.

204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-8500

My question is: When I look up generic ram on ebay or anywhere do I search for "DDR3 SODIMM 204 pin" only and would any "DDR3 SODIMM 204 pin" fit and work in my unit?

I did a search and in 1 search only 300 results show up but If I change the order of the "DDR3 SODIMM 204 pin" just a bit then 3000 results show up.

Heres what I mean. To me these seem to be the same specs. Yet the first 1 comes up in the search that has the entire "DDR3 SODIMM 204 pin" but the 2nd 1 comes up when I do a search without 204 pin even though the 204 pin is listed right in the listing. Now would either of these work, would both work, are both the same (never mind pictures they are just there for illustration)?

http://cgi.ebay.com/DDR3-4GB-PC10600-SODIMM-1333MHZ-204PIN-MEMORY-MODULES-/110700964290?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19c64aa9c2#ht_5770wt_905

I need an easier way to understand and buy ram because it is so much cheaper on ebay then crucials site. Like this ram above. Its $41 each 4gb stick. I have 3 of the exact same laptops that I may be upgrading. All 3 will be getting 2 of these each. Thats $263 for all 6 sticks from crucial w/ tax and free shipping. If I can get it on ebay I will pay around $200 with no tax and no shipping. Big difference!

BTW what is unbuffered ram and why does it matter? I dont think I have ever noticed ram that said buffered?!

Looks like SOMEONE is checking out today's Woot! You use it to stream content from places such as Netflix to your TV. Not everyone wants to connect their computer to their TV for this purpose. Personally, I use a Toshiba Blue Ray player that has streaming capabilities. I've noticed in recent TV ads (I think it's Toshiba) that TV's are now being sold with WiFi already built in, so you don't need to connect your TV to anything at all (other than your Internet connection, of course.)

StanUpshaw

So if you have a subscription to some web service, and their box happens to support it, it just allows you to play it on the TV instead of computer.

They don't supply any new content though, right? Like there's not some channel that shows spaghetti westerns or Japanese pro wrestling or anything?

Basically what I'm getting at is if I pirate everything and own an HDMI cable, is there any reason this gizmo might interest me?

I didn't look into what they meant by the 300+ channels thing. I didn't look it up, because I already have a cable provider. As far as I can tell, it's mostly a means to connect to subscription services or other Web content. I have Netflix. That's why I got the DVD player I mentioned in my last post. If all you watch is pirated stuff that's on your comp, then there's probably no reason for you to purchase this device. For someone who does want to connect their TV to online content (that isn't stored on their computer), then the $45 bucks for this device doesn't sound like a bad deal.

Dont they make new boxes that are little computer towers that allow you to do this, and it has a hard drive, usb slots and allows you to go on the web too? I think they cost around $200 so they arent worth it at that price but at $100 or so they would be!

There are media streamers that play MP3, xvid, x264, wmv, etc, etc, etc. Some just stream from your home network, some have USB ports, some have internal storage. And SOME have Netflix apps like this Roku thing.

It's all too much.

Yeah... I just clicked that link. It looks to me like, if you want to replace your cable box with this, it's not a good choice. Their channel lineup looks like crap.

It reminds me of this dude who kept telling me all about Free to Air Satellite. Watch free TV from all over the planet!! Then you look at the channel listing and it's 50% bible stations, a few news stations, and one that shows nothing but cricket.

Yeah I know they have smaller and less computer like to what I posted that are cheaper. They even sell external hard drives that also have built in media players that you hook directly to your tv and they come with a remote. They were expensive but now you can buy them and put in your own hard drive for $40.

Im interested in this roku thing. I would love to get rid of fios/cable tv completely and just use netflix, hulu and other sites for my tv. I just need to get a good antenna set up for basic channels. Any recommendations on an antenna?

Is there a functional difference between:

Can't help you with the antenna, but as for the other stuff... $45 bucks is pretty good for the other stuff. But if you want to spend just a little more, I'd recommend a DVD player that has streaming built in. The one I have was selling for $100, but I got an "open box" one from Best Buy for $80. However, I have only watched ONE DVD since I bought it.

Why does Seagate produce such amazingly shitty products?

I don't think I've ever retired a Seagate drive. Every one I have ever bought has shit the bed.

This is bizarre. I just plugged in this 750 GB drive that had previously shit the bed and it worked!

It's just been sitting on a shelf for months after it refused to mount and just sat in my enclosure clicking. Any ideas on why it had a sudden change of heart?

Go to download.com com and get the free versions of spybot search and destroy. If your comp is 32 bit, and not 64 bit, run a "boot time scan". If that doesn't find anything, then try Malwarebytes and Advanced System Care Free. I've never used fix-it, but sometimes it takes more than one program to fix a problem.

If you use one, do you mostly just put your operating system and programs on it, and use your secondary drive for storing files?

In other words, what are the best reasons for having one?

Speed. They're significantly faster than conventional hard disk drives. Just how reliable they are is still being worked out, but they seem to be at least as reliable as HDD's.

The usual configuration is to keep the OS and applications on the solid state drive, then put data (porn, etc.) on a 2nd standard hard drive, for a few reasons: a solid state drive doesn't really have much of an advantage in just loading a file, like a document, a song, or a tranny porn movie, that puts unnecessary read/write cycles on the SSD, and at this point SSD's are so much more expensive than HDD's that the cost isn't worth it. I mean, looking at Newegg now, you can get a 3TB HDD for $129, and 120GB SSD's start at around $199. I think HDD's will still be the way to go for large data storage for quite a while.

Radioguy
07-31-2011, 02:41 PM
Additionally, because of the nature of SSDs vs HDDs, you would want to archive to a medium that has a better chance of being recovered from if a failure occurs. Of the two, that's an HDD. When an SSD fails, the contents are usually unrecoverable (Freezer's not gonna help).

I'd heard that Staples had the 16GB model for $49. I would have definitely bought one of those for that price.

HP says that they aren't stopping development of WebOS, but after this clusterfuck I can't imagine what hardware makers would be lining up to make WebOS devices. So I'd probably try to get Android on there if I got one of these.

Aside from that, my Vista laptop has a cute little quirk. I have it set so that when I close the lid while it is plugged in, it will sleep. This makes it easy when I want to shut the fucking thing down real quick without tracking down the shutdown button and waiting 2 minutes for it to be quiet. Every once and a while, I will come downstairs in the morning, and it's on (at the login screen), fan screaming away because I set it down on the couch, which blocks the fan exhaust. Because it's at the login screen, I know that when I closed the lid, it went into sleep mode, then woke up. What would cause this to happen? Is it Anonymous, or just some shitty "service" running my computer without my permission?

The Enterprise edition is not distributed through retail channels, and the image isn't publicly available. A torrent is your best bet unless your friend can contact their company for a disc image. TechNet/MSDN subscribers have access to the image, but mine isn't current.

Is there anything I can do about it, if that's what it tuns out to be?

EDIT: I now see that it would require replacing the mobo. That's not a big deal, but I do need to test the drive while it's in the enclosure. I tested to see that I can use it, but I never ran a test to see if it has bad sectors. The laptop is worth fixing if I have to replace the mobo or the drive, but not both, since it also needs a new battery. If I get it working, it will just be a knock around comp for when I'm away from home. It's old, but I like how very small and lightweight it is.

Edit again: Yup... It's a bad hard drive. Problem is, it's an IDE drive. These old drives are ridiculously expensive these days. I guess I'll hold onto the laptop, in hopes of running across a drive in the future.

Your TV should have available audio out left and right jacks. Just get a cable that has left and right on one end, and 1/8 inch jack on the other. Plug that into your audio in jack on the computer. If you're already using that jack for something else, you can get an audio/video slelector (I use one), that will allow you to connect multiple units to your comp's audio in jack.

The pic is kind of dark, but it looks like you could. You may have to play with the menu settings of your TV, but it does look like that would work.

I think so. I don't know about the video, but you have obviously looked it up. The audio cable should work, as far as I can see.

yeah. you could even just do a VGA cable from computer to tv for the video. It's high definition.

I thought of that too but I want to have the tv and my computer screen hooked up at the same time. If I connected a vga how would I be able to leave them both connected at all times?

if your monitor is just vga,its probably best to go the dvi to hdmi route and i'd use the red/white rca plugs for audio, save the digital input for something other than computer where sound matters like a bluray

I've asked this question before, but it's still not resolved. My Windows 7 computer loses three seconds every day on the clock. I've tried all of the settings. I've used Internet time using each source option, and I've tried without Internet time. Last night I decided to check the CMOS battery. It read 2.49 volts so I put in one that read 2.99 volts. I still lost 3 seconds on Internet time. I'm going to change it back to non Internet time tonight, but I don't have much faith in it.

Any suggestions?

I had a netbook that would do something similar but it would keep accurate time but when i restarted it, it would always back track to the date time when it was first started. I did a restore and it then would go back to the new initial time and date. It was weird and couldnt fix it!

Check the little slide to on the side.

Edit. I just realized you said Micro. Are you putting it in an adapter? Maybe the adapter has a lock.

Double Edit. I just looked it up. Other people also have had the problem of the lock on the adapter being in the wrong position.

I was using an adapter and the adapter didnt have a lock on it. I decided to put the card into another adapter and it worked. So something was wring with that adapter, somehow it became locked even though it didnt have a lock anywhere to be found!

can a surround sound system that normally would be hooked up to a dvd player and tv be connected just to a computer instead? The system has a tuner, speakers, sub woofer and monitor!

Yes. As long as the computer has a surround sound capable audio card. If the computer's audio card only has the basics (line in, single green speaker output, etc) then it won't work. If it has a tuner, chances are, it has a surround sound capable card.

EDIT: You may need to ignore what I just said. I use my computer's surround sound card to enable surround speakers. I've never actually hooked up an external surround sound system to my comp. I've basically done the reverse.

I hooked up a desktop to 2 monitors 1 is a computer screen the other is a plasma tv. Is there a way to have use the 1 side to search the web or whatever while playing a movie on the other side or doing something totally different?

I my able to extend the screen and duplicate but I want to be able to use it like its 2 different computers going at the same time, if possible!

Yes. A lot of programs have a Theater mode you can use. It will play your video fullscreen on the television for you, allowing you to work on your other monitor. On one of my systems, I hook the computer to a television using HDMI and make sure to use the HDMI audio feature so it passes sound (either plain stereo or digital surround) to the device.
