I'm thinking Cloverfield but with aliens that we know are aliens and not something that might be an alien but we're not sure about being an alien.

At last, J.J. Abrams peels back the curtain on his mystery movie Super 8 (http://io9.com/#!5754711/at-last-jj-abrams-peels-back-the-curtain-on-his-mystery-movie-super-8)

Super 8 takes its name from the Eastman Kodak film format that became a sensation with amateur movie-makers in the late 1960s and represented a rite of passage for several generations of aspiring directors, among them Spielberg and Abrams. The Paramount Pictures release is set in Ohio in 1979 and introduces a troupe of six youngsters who are using a Super 8 camera to make their own zombie movie. One fateful night, their project takes them to a lonely stretch of rural railroad tracks and, as the camera rolls, calamity strikes - a truck collides with an oncoming locomotive and a hellacious derailment fills the night with screaming metal and raining fire. Then something emerges from the wreckage, something decidedly inhuman.

It's pretty hard to care about this movie. I'm in my late 20's, I'm not married, I have a beard and I've argued that Lost's ending was good. I should be taking off work to go see this movie the day it comes out, and you couldn't pay me to give a shit about it. This is the time of ragnarok.

Do you think it may be fallout from Cloverfield? I really enjoyed Star Trek, and the first few seasons of Lost, but I have a really hard time putting trust in Abrams because of that film.

Seriously...can anyone tell the difference between a JJ Abrams piece of CGI shit, a Steven Spielberg piece of CGI shit, a Roland Emmerich piece of CGI shit, or frankly even a Michael Bay piece of CGI shit? ALL OF THESE MOVIES ARE GARBAGE. I don't know how someone can convince themselves that Star Trek was good but Cloverfield sucked. It's the same fucking movie, except one is in space and isn't as shakey.

Totally disagree. I thought Star Trek had a good narrative and solid acting for an ACTION film. It also took an established story and in a creative way, retold it. The story in Cloverfield was loosely pieced together at best, characters made decisions that made absolutely no sense and the key plot points were simply not explained in an effort to be cutting edge that came off as extremely annoying. Also, the shakey cam didn't work for many reasons: It was TOO shaky, the realism behind the camcorder was absolutely lost and the film could have worked without it.

One of the dumbest things I've ever seen in a film was how coincidentally the same camera that shot the meteorite falling to the ground was taped over and shot the weeks later destruction from whatever it was that fell.

Star Trek was not perfect, granted, but it wasn't THAT stupid.

I dont think so because I liked Cloverfield when it came out, and only just watched it for a second time a few weeks ago and hated the characters so much I couldn't watch the movie. Technically I think Cloverfield is really well done, I just think it needed a little more payoff and someone to care about.

I think maybe because there is nothing organic about enthusiasm for the movie. The teaser was shot before the movie was made, so what exactly are they teasing. I've been told that this movie is going to be amazing by marketing, but not actually shown anything that makes me think it myself.

This is more about Speilberg as a producer than J.J. Abrams as a director.
Abrams is a film geek and a fan and that's what Super * is about
So if you like Amblin entertainment from our past like Goonies and ET and Close Encounters of the Third Kind
This movie tries to relive that emotional connection.

They didn't mix the two story lines together too well; one of kids making a monster movie in the 70s, and the escaped alien story. The stuff with all the kids is mostly fantastic. It really catches the Spielberg ET era pretty well, but the monster...eeeh..To me it looked like a cousin of the Cloverfield monster, only smaller( and JJ Abrams produced that one too).
However, this movie should make a BIG star out of Elie Fanning. In a scene near the beginning of the movie, she's acting out a part in a zombie movie, and the lead boy, all the kids , and US just ..stare at her, because she's a natural at acting. The only thing I can equate it to is when Brad Pitt rides up on a horse in Legends of the Fall. You know at this instant that THIS is a goddamn movie star .She positively GLOWS as she acts. and now , because she's like 16, I'll shut up before I seem like a real pedo...

Too late.

As usual... I didn't get it.

For some reason... I keep seeing these sci fi movies, and I never seem to understand who's doing what ... and why. It's silly, sloppy, and lazy film making. Period. They all are.

SUPER 8. The plot doesn't work.

Here. Lemme save you 12 bucks.
Years ago, the government captured an alien. This alien wants only to rebuild his spaceship (comprised of millions of tiny building blocks) and fly home. One scientist doesn't condone what our government is doing to the alien. He doesn't agree with the testing and probing... so they fire him. He gets a job as a teacher in a tiny town. He inexplicably is able to track the captive alien as they move him from lab to lab (I guess) in a train. He waits until the train just so happens to be passing through his tiny town.... and crashes head on into the train.... in an effort to derail the train and set the alien free. (??!?!?!)
The alien... who didn't REALLY need the train to be derailed to break himself free... breaks free. And even though all the building blocks are, literally, right there on the ground in front of him... he doesn't finally use this moment to go home. WHAT??
The monster then, somehow, digs a series of massive underground tunnels and begins building some kind of mechanism. All the while... he is gathering humans... hanging them upside down like salami at a deli, and occasionally eats these humans.
THEN he grabs hold of one of the boys (the main character, natch) and instead of eating the boy... he sets the boy free?!?!?! Why??? Because the boy looked at the monster and said three words "bad things happen. I know... bad things happen."
I swear to god. That is the dialog.
This sentence makes sense to the monster. He comprehends it (somehow), and lets the boy walk away.
A few moments later, an amazing magnetic charge occurs... and all the metal in the immediate area gets attracted to the top of the town's water tower. This metal serves no purpose. It just flies there. Above that... all the little metal cubes start to form themselves into the shape of a spaceship. It just sits there. It doesn't move. Then... inexplicably... one more wave of magnetic energy sweeps the town... and the main character's locket & chain come out of his pocket and start to gravitate toward the massive pile of metal. (the locket belonged to his dead mother, and has tremendous sentimental value).
The boy lets the locket go.... it flies out of his hands... and gravitates toward the metal pile. When it joins the rest of the magnetic pile.... the spaceship comes to life, and flies off into outer space.
The End.

The "super 8" film is not part of the plot. It serves no part in anything. They didn't really capture much of anything on that super 8 camera. NOTHING is learned by anyone once they view that super 8 footage. It exposes no weakness, and it contains no additional info.
The adults in this movie all act like tards. All of them.

I actually really like JJ as a director.
I like MI:III and Star Trek. I think both movies are directed well. Good pacing... he gets good performances.... and I always like that he often replaces the dialog with the score in certain scenes. (usually a montage...but not always).

I think he's gifted. I really do. He's an excellent COMMERCIAL film director.

Having said that... the WRITING of this new movie is a misfire. The thread of what's happening and WHY it's happening just doesn't gel for me.

I thought it was put forth pretty clear, especially by the end of the movie of what was happening and why... the school teacher's notes and film explained all that.

I always expect logic. I demand it.
When I saw, for example, Raiders Of The Lost Ark... I was a little kid, and I "got it". I understood who was doing what and why they were doing it.
When I saw Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.... I was in my mid 30ies... and I didn't know what the fuck was going on.
