Gordon Brown to resign as prime minister in the hopes of securing another Labour government. Yup, British politics is fucked up.
So now there will be a "progressive" coalition of Labour, Lib Dems, SNP, Plaid Cymru, Alliance parties against the Torries who have the most seats in parliament, but not enough to get a majority government.
It would be interesting to see where Labour goes from here. It had gone a bit to the right in the 90s, but the rise of the Lib Dems might force them back. It all depends on who they elect as the next party leader. If it The Harriet Harman, they stick to the centrist doctrine, if it David Milliband, it's probably swinging to the left, and who knows, they might even merge with the Lib Dems.
It would also be interesting how far the new coalition government will actually implement the election reforms that the Lib Dems want as part of any coalition they join, and what role in gov't Nick Clegg and/or Vince Cable will get.
