View Full Version : bands no one's ever heard of
Arienette
01-29-2002, 09:49 AM
there are a lot of things that i listen to that not very many other people have heard of. i mean, i know there's a following out there (and often a fairly devout one, at that), but when i mention a band name, the person i mention it to won't know what i'm talking about at least 47 out of 50 times. and often this is the best music but, for whatever reason, the word just hasn't gotten out. for me, some of these are:
bright eyes, texas is the reason, rainer maria, voltaire, desaparecidos, elliott, tram, etc
and, the less unknown, but still generally unknown:
white stripes, idlewild, sunny day real estate, whale, gwnemars, creeper lagoon, ...and you will know us by the trail of dead, modest mouse, sigur ros, etc
who are you all listen to that i might not have heard of?

I've heard of Sunny Day Real Estate (the song Seven). That's about it. Didn't a couple of the guys become Foo Fighters?
If it's not on K-Rock, I don't listen to it...LOL
I love seldom heard bands like Fountains of Wayne, Catch 22, Showoff, but I can't think of many unknown ones. Maybe local one or ones that haven't broken (Highway 9, The Youth Ahead, The Starting Line, Allister. Clem Snide, etc.)

Actually Arienette, I like Sunny Day Real Estate and Modest Mouse quite a bit. Modest Mouse reminds me alot of Built To Spill, but I think they're going for that sound. For me, I listen mostly to stuff from local bands.
<a href=http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/13/aviso_hara.html>Aviso Hara</a>
<a href=http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/41/plugspark_sanjay.html>Plug Spark Sanjay</a>
<a href=http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/5/prosolar_mechanics.html>Prosolar Mechanics</a>
<a href=http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/55/the_milwaukees.html>The Milwaukees</a>

<a href=http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/117/dewey_defeated.html>Dewey Defeated</a>
<a href=http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/17/the_swimmies.html>The Swimmies</a>
<a href=http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/129/boss_jim_gettys.html>Boss Jim Gettys</a> (now defunct, but DL the mp3's, great power punk stuff)
<a href=http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/105/bobfields.html>bobfields</a>
<a href=http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/156/the_can_utility.html>The Can Utility</a>
But that's just local Jersey stuff, except The Can Utility who are from Richmond Va.
One of my all time favorites of a national band that most people don't know is still <a href=http://posterchildren.com/>The Poster Children</a> though. I always have to explain that the guy in Hum used to be in The Poster Children, and then people sort of start to get it. Anyway, here's some new music for you to get a listen to.
By the way, Plug Spark Sanjay is playing at Uncle Joe's tavern in Jersey City with The Swimmies on Friday 2/1 if you're interested in seeing them live. Show starts at 10.

dude, catch 22 is so awesome, they still play shows occasionally (without their singer, since he left the band). professor plum was great too, but they broke up, BUT you can catch some of their old members in the new band Tokyo Rose.
anyways, i can picture half the people here looking at some of these bands and just going "wtf?", so here goes:
Kicked In The Head
The Spitvalves
Rx Bandits
Atom & His Package
The Arrogant Sons of Bitches
World/Inferno Friendship Society
Bigwig
What's Your Problem Brian
Wizo
Mustard Plug
Skankin Pickle(RIP)
Big D & The Kids Table
some more i could add, but i'm tired. what's cool is my band has had the pleasure of playing with some of these great bands, so maybe if you've heard of them, hey, you'l think that my band is actually something good, lol.
i have nothing useful to add.

Finally a thread for me! I host a radio show show exactly for this purpose, to expose these great bands to people. I know all of the bands on Arienette's list, Poison Ivy wins for most obscure list of bands...I've only heard of 3 of those artists that she listed. I expected Angrymissy to name some more underground bands then what she posted (Who doesn't know who Cub is?) But really, I'll try and check out some of these groups.

"That shit'll mess you up man!"
I think AngryMissy just listed my High School CD Collection. Not that that's a bad thing. Nothing like 90s Modern Rock.
Catch 22 keeps changing line-ups and sounds and haven't yet lived up to the Keasby Nights Album. Oh well.

Yes Ms. ivy, Aimee mann is one of the artists that i do indeed know. Also heard of the Kennedys and Leona Naess. Only bands i get stumped on are either Foreign or really, really new. I'd talk about the show except that i do it in Brooklyn and if you take into account that NYC is market #1 and very suffocated as far as frequencies go, i'm surprised my station isn't carrier current. I listen to other college stations like WSOU and the DJ's there sound like it's their first time on a mic...I know they're learning and so am I but c'mon I've improved more in one year then the people who have been there for 3.

Don't be jealous Skidmark ;) lol
Marry Me Jane - Have been around for a few years. The lead singer Amanda Kravitz also has a solo career. They have 2 albums. The first was used as the soundtrack for If Lucy Fell ( A bad Sarah Jessica Parker movie)
Jon Kahn Band - Probably the most obscure of all I have listed. Jon Kahn tried to showcase his musical talents with the movie Girl but it never quite worked out.
Chantal Kreviazuk - Did a cover of Leaving on a Jet Plane that I think was used in the movie Armeggeddon.
The rest are artists I have either heard of from movies or the progressive channel on my digital cable.
So Bob can I listen to your show somehow? Or do you not reach NJ?

Tri-State Conspiracy is really growing on me...and so are the dropkick murphys and the bouncing souls, who are gonna be playing in Sayville at the end of February, you all should go see them(shameless plug, since my band's playing that too, hehe)
point is, winger really sucks.

Fountains Of Wayne didn't break up, they're working on a new album. In fact Chris Collingwood contacted me about 3 weeks ago regarding my request for an on-air interview. Skidmark, I interviewed Jeff from The Milwuakees on monday night. He was calling in to promote their show on Maxwell's on Feb. 1st As far as hearing my show in NJ anytime soon? I wish. The station is going to have an internet feed by Friday so if you're interested in that i'll see if i can get permission to post the URL on the board.

Jeff is a really good guy. He did <a href=http://www.mp3.com/diggerphelps>my band</a> a big favor and had us on the bill at The Court Tavern last Dec. 14th. Helped to promote it with us on the bill and everything.
I'd even go see them at Maxwell's, but I'm catching Plug spark Sanjay at Uncle Joe's in Jersey City that Friday with The Swimmies.

About 2 years ago i lost all faith in american rock music because to me it all sounded the same so i started listening to Latin Rock. I remember Soda Stereo very well. There were 2 great radio shows for latin rock, La Nueva Alternativa on tuesday between 10 and 12pm on WBAI, and roc en espanol con rodrigo alavarado (quite a mouthful)on 105.9 before it turned into another 97.9 La Mega. I remember playing a latin emo group on my show a year ago...bad idea.

gmann, snapcase and the vandals are both excellent choices. i've heard of most of the others, as well, but i wouldn't say that i'm into them...
this thread is making me feel like planning an indie outing of some kind...

going off on a tangent, the Vandals on the warped tour were fucking awesome...they ended their set with "i have a date" and the singer(i forget his name) climbed up these 25-foot high speakers and jumps off at the end of the song...all you hear is a big THUMP and then "uhhhhhhhhhh" from him...he was ok though.
some more bands i've been getting into recently are Harold's Trousers, Sprout, and Straighter Than Pete..Sprout played the warped tour too, at the local tent, it was pretty damn cool.
i have nothing useful to add.

I end my show every tuesday morning (it's 3am by this point)with So long, Farewell by The Vandals. Don't know too much about them except that they're signed to Kung Fu records the same label that re-released Ozma's rock and roll part 3 album. One of the members of The Vandals also starred in a Kung Fu records funded independant film called "That Darn Punk". Don't know if it's good or not but the soundtrack is pretty good from the tracklisting that i saw.

Some other bands include:
Chucklehead
Godflesh
Pigface
Iceburn
Supervixen

Alright if we're talking about canadian bands then throw Grade and By A Thread into the mix. I wonder when The Rentals tribute album is going to take effect but then i realize The Anniversary are doing a good job at it.
Obscure band jab!!! beat that

I love me some Sunny Day Real Estate.
Someone said Mono Puff. No Statesmen? Linnell needs love too ;P
And I only like the Get Up Kids when they have a more Ben Folds' Five sound to them (ie songs like "The Company Dime). Sorry.
My tastes are a combination of unheard of and obscure. I owe some of these to our very own girl germs:
Neutral Milk Hotel
Promise Ring
Moxy Fruvous
Elf Power
Dan Bern
Built to Spill
Tom Waits (I think only 1% of the population is familiar with him. I'd like to hang out with only that 1%)
There's random stuff, like the Dismemberment Plan, Apples in Stereo, Possum Dixon, etc. that I can't claim to be huge fans of but I'm a fan nonetheless.
Oh, and I was shocked when Al put on Superdrag "Sucked Out" the other night. He's cool, people! I swear!
Not that they're obscure, but more people should listen to Soul Coughing on a daily basis ;P
