i had an argument today with my friend that was watching the richard episode of lost. He was complaining that he hated reading subtitled and it made him not want to watch the episode. I thought the episode was amazing. I just dont understand peoples problem with subtitles, by now reading should just be something thats ingrained in us. If i see a billboard i dont physically think "oh no here we go my brain has to read something". Is this a problem for anyone else or are these people just retards that can't process two things at once?

They probably read slowly.

Yes.

I had someone I work with say that even the smallest words on the bottom of a screen will distract him.

What I can't stand are the graphics on TV screens (like the network logo and shit). They make a show for TV. They put subtitles or other info on the screen, then they cover up the words that THEY put there in the first place!

And, if they put themselves in situations where their reading speed is challenged, they will get better at reading faster.

The only subtitle downside is that it requires you to look at the screen the whole movie, which makes it a pain to multitask while watching the show.

In theory, but they usually opt for saying "subtitles suck", and then they just don't watch anything with them.

These hayseeds are way too lazy nowadays and just write off film or tv with subtitles and end up missing out on some pretty cool stuff like un prophete, a french movie that i think was brought up on the air a while ago. I just think it's strange because i dont even think twice if something is subtitled or not. But, it is true that its hard to multitask while watching.

I'd rather watch something that's subtitled and in the original language than listen to horrible dubbing any day of the week

that's the issue there. you look away for a second and have no clue what was just said.

But I feel like I get into a subtitle groove after a few minutes where I'm getting and reading the subtitle without having to look intently at the words, like I was reading a book. If you turn off that sensation of reading its like you understand the language the movie is in.

I hate bad subtitles though, when they're paced too quickly or placed on the screen with no consideration of the letter color vs the background color. I heard the subtitles for the US DVD release of Let The Right One In totally fuck up the movie, and theres a scene in Cache where you have no idea what happens because there is a glare on a coffee table.

With subtitles, I can't use my laptop or phone at the same time. I HAVE to watch the movie/show. I can't just have a Korean movie on in the background while I'm surfing the internet.

People avoid unpleasantness even if the endgame is a great movie.

The only bad subtitles are none at all. I bought "Immortalle," and the producers accidently didn't subtitle the gods in the regular subtitles. But they existed in the Closed Captions... grrrr.

Then it actually forces you to improve your movie watching experience.

I have no problem with subtitles, but I also understand that most people aren't readers

I like subtitles. I used to watch movies on my laptop which had poor sound. I like dialoge over action, so I don't mind missing some on screen movement to read good lines. And I sort of dislike seeing people in ancient china speaking english.

I did not notice it, and I liked the movie. How did they ruin it?

actually now that i think about it, i remember the subtitles were in white so they didnt stand out well against the snow on the ground in alot of scenes.

Never had a problem with subtitles, don't mind them at all.

And Rawkus, your sigpic is too big. Shrink it down to 300 X 100.

My girlfriend has somewhat mild dyslexia and she'll watch subtitled movies with me. The only problem is that sometimes the subtitles go by too fast for her to catch everything and she'll have to ask me what just happened. Pan's Labyrinth seemed to be particularly bad for some reason.

So maybe there are people with problems who are embarrassed to admit so they'd rather say "I don't pay to read for two hours!"

That would make sense. I thought you were saying they were badly translated or something. Now that I think of it, I have complained when subtitles are hard to read.
