View Full Version : Dude, why is Netflix sucking so much?
Has anyone noticed the quality of the Instant Streaming has been awful for a while now?
Buffering times take forever, it's always interrupted to adjust playback quality.
Their streaming used to be flawless. Anyone know what happened?
P.S. It's not my connection or hardware. So don't ask me if that's the problem.

It's pissing me off.
It use to run decent and stream HD on the PS3....not it's almost unusable.
Wii actually streams pretty well...haven't noticed many problems with that.
Laptop is just like you described....choppy, buffering (and it's a long buffer, too...a few minutes) in every episode)....and the most aggravating this is when it redetects the quality of the stream, because that's even longer.

maybe since they crushed blockbuster, they feel they don't need to try as hard...?

I'd guess it's your connection.
Broadband keeps getting more and more subscribers; subscribers are demanding more and more from the web.
Do you still have problems during non-peak times of the day?
Chris Tanley has the right idea to avoid all of those nasty streaming issues.

Yeah, and I really don't think it's my connection. It sounds like it's a fairly widespread issue from googling it.
There's a belief that Netflix is now capping the speed because they can't accomodate demand.

i'm usually watching things from midnite on ...
I thought this was going to be a thread about the missing movies on Netflix (whichever production company they never got a license with)... annoys the hell outta me when I can't find the movie I want.

The fact that you can't sort movies by "Date Added" annoys me to no end. But, yeah, streaming quality sucks a ball's ass. Even when I play a movie on LAN, it looks like a resolution of about 50x70 sometimes. I've read reviews where people have said to "make sure that you have full bars when you watch this one". How the fuck can I make sure I have full bars? As if I have some way to control it? If that were the case, I would make sure that I have full bars all the time, and I would also make sure that you could sort new releases by "date added", and then I would make sure that whoever designed the netflix site had a train dropped on his head.

if you use firefox, there's a script (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/35183) for greasemonkey that allows you to sort and update your queue bay a few options

How does it work if the date that a title is added to their website is not recorded?

I run it through 360. Don't really have a problem with it at all, except the layout is godawful hard to navigate.

Really? For me it's gotten better. My buffer times are mere seconds and playback is clear and uninterrupted unless the other two computers on my home network are sucking down bandwidth also.

it only allows you to Sort your Netflix queue by movie title, length, genre, average rating, star/suggested/user rating, availability, or playability. Includes options to shuffle/randomize or reverse your queue

Good to know, but I really just want to be able to look through movies based on the date that they are added. Since I have gone through all of the Watch Instantly titles a while ago, it would be nice to just browse backwards until you reach a title that you already looked at before. That way you don't "lose" titles when they are added, or find a movie that they have had for a year under "Just Released". The only reason I can think of why they have such random-seeming organization on the Just Released list is to disguise the low number of films that they actually add.

The only problem is when I'm ordering a disc set for a TV series and there is one or sometimes two discs not available of that set. There is no clue on when it's going to be available. That's happened a few times.

No, I'd never complain about that.
Even though they are missing some stuff, if you've ever seen Blockbuster or Wal-Mart's ill-fated movie rental system, Netflix is still worlds better.
They definitely should branch into porn, though.

So, Redbox now has streaming. Their selection isn't overly terrific, and the devices are limited, but for $8 you get the streaming AND 4 DVD's a month. Given that it's way cheaper than Netfix (with the addition of the DVD's, and fact that you can pick them up and drop them off easily, I'm giving the free trial a try. Hopefully, they'll get more titles and devices.

I've been part of their streaming service for a while now and I have to say I've definitely gotten my money's worth.
Granted, when I first signed up I was under the impression that there would be way more modern movies, but for $8 a month I can't complain.

What kills me with all the streaming services is no consistency with TV shows. Hulu is good for some shows sorta.. Some shows have every season available, others only cycle between the newest 2-3 episodes. Most shows available on there I don't care about though.. Netflix is the worst.. They will seemingly stop updating seasons of shows for no apparent reason whatsoever and they just fester there.. Law and Order SVU is showing season 14 on TV yet Netflix stopped updating seasons at 12...
I manage (I cut the cable last summer) though.. Just juggle between Netflix, Torrents, Hulu and networks that offer full episode streaming free.. A&E is good about this..

Netflix Says It’s ‘Killing’ BitTorrent Traffic
Video streaming giant Netflix believes that making content available is the best way to beat online piracy, and the company has data to back this up. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos reveals that ISPs are noticing a drop in BitTorrent traffic every time they launch in a new territory. “The best way to combat piracy isn’t legislatively or criminally but by giving good options,” Sarandos says.

Netflix is always a season behind. I think it's part of how stuff gets released to them.

I 100% believe this. You always have piracy because there is a culture that it's a part of, but people only pirate shit en masse when it is the most attractive option. If you can provide a better option people will still pay you for it, they'll even walk away from piracy to do it.
