About two weeks ago I got a speeding ticket for doing 81 in a 55. The ticket is for $294. Everyone I talk to tells me to plead not guilty, but the more I think about it I feel like it's not worth the trouble, and that any money I get knocked off the ticket would be offset by the time I spend trying to get it reduced. Are there any other benefits to pleading not guilty and possibly getting the ticket reduced other than the money I will save? Please advise. Ill sign off and wait for your response

I'm pretty sure pleading not guilty (and getting the charge reduced if possible) will mean less points on your license than you would get if you pleaded guilty. Also keep in mind this all gets reported to your insurance carrier, so maybe fighting the ticket and getting it reduced will help you save money in the long run.

I live in CT, and according to the traffic violation website,

# If you make your payment in full and your case disposes at the Centralized Infractions Bureau, no points will be assessed by the Department of Motor Vehicles against your driver's license, however it will appear on your driving history.
# Points are only given if there is a conviction (a finding of guilty) or a bond forfeiture, after a court hearing.

This is my first ticket

Damn, in NY we get points for looking at the cop funny. If it's not going to affect your license and feel that paying it is easiest then pay it. You could aways take a rate reduction course if your insurance gets hit.

Couple questions

Was the ticket for speeding specifically or someting else depending on how they wrote the ticket?
Are you insured your self or are you on a parents insurance plan?

I believe in CT speeding counts as points on your license. Some of the other codes excessive speed or what ever dont carry points.
If the poilcy is in your name it may affect your rates next renewal time. If its your parents policy it may not get picked up and slip through.

Ticket was for "Speeding" statute # 14-219(c). Right now I'm on my parent's plan, but within the next year I will probably be on my own

Im pretty sure pleading guilty to speeding will get you points. Id go in and talk to the prosecutor when you get there. The money you spend on the fine is worth the trouble because the insurance carrier will fuck you for 3 years because of it.

And CT and NY is a cakewalk compared to NJ. These motherfuckers charge you $275 to reduce 2 points off your ticket, and you can only do it twice in 5 years. Also its the only state in the country where if you get a ticket for a moving violation in another state, the points still go on your license here.

I got lucky with my ticket. I plead Not Guilty, and when the court date arrived, the cop was in the hospital. Judge gave me a 6 month probationary period, no charges.

I saw so many DUIs thrown out, and I swear he let all the traffic cases off that day, even apologized for how long we had to wait. Couldn't believe it.

It's pretty much always worth it to plead it down, especially based on points which I'm pretty sure you'll get hit with if you plead guilty. Hell, the financial hit is way worse to take the point hit on insurance in one year versus pleading unsafe driving which usually costs ~ $400.

Go to the court and figure it all out with the judge and prosecutor. Use the fact it's your first ever ticket, bc that should give you some sympathy since you aren't a frequent flyer.

If you pay the ticket without contesting it, it goes down as No Contest/Nolo Contendere, so the penalty isn't as bad as flat-out losing the case in court.

To try to cut down on court cases, they'll let you slide without taking the points, but you'll still face an insurance hike.

Why didn't you just blow the cop?

Hows that work? Insurance doesnt go up unless you get points.
