It was setting up how he was dead inside and didnt give a shit in the end.

Finally had the chance to watch the finale and thought it was probably the high note for the season. I thought they were going for a higher "mythic" ratio by including a lot of "Godfather" type imagery in some of the big scenes and IMO it worked more often than not. I also thought Smails hit the nail on the head with Nucky's newly complicated domestic situation. I'll bet Season Three will have a Sopranos' motif as Buscemi has to deal with problems on the home front as well as at work.

PS - Anybody who watched the American version of Funny Games knows that Jimmy had it coming.

The last two episodes seemed like a patchwork to get to the end of the season. An episode a few before that seemed the same to get caught up/recap. Other than that it has been seamless almost and has held my attention. This is the only series like this that I watch and enjoy.

The best character on the show is alive and well. Richard Harrow is back at the house, remember?

I like Harrow, but I don't understand why people on the internet (not just here, everywhere) act like he is some super powerful badass on Omar's level. Jimmy has killed more than him and sometimes in more gruesome ways... he is just Jimmy's little henchman/bodyguard.

An unsung character, in my opinion, is Mickey Doyle. I just walk around the house doing his giggle all day for no other reason than to just to get under my wife's skin.

He was one character who definitely grew as this season went on. He had to be a weasel early on just to survive with all those "big dogs" (luciano, jimmy, capone, lansky)... but when he was doing his own deals like trying to double cross them with Van Alden or such, he wasn't acting so weaselly and sure of himself (no more stupid giggle). He might actually know what he is doing and what it takes to survive in this crime world.

I think the character is well liked because of how well he's being played by the actor. As far as the killing goes....Harrow may not have done as much murderin', but the dudes a machine. He doesn't hesitate or have any conflicting feelings about it, so I think that's what people focus on when they're talking about him being a bad ass.

Ok, read the thread... here are my thoughts now:

Jimmy obviously got his shit in order (will to his kid, dog tags, spend some dad time with kid) knowing there was a good chance he was going to die (and he was fine with it, he knew he had already died in the trenches in the war like he tells Nuck. And the scene showing him there tops it off)... what I have an issue with, is I think the writers overlooked Jimmy doing something in case of his death to make sure his crazy ass mother didn't take care of his child.

Others saying how could they kill Jimmy when he has all these followers and stuff... I think he realized in the last episode nobody was listening to him. He told all those guys and Uncle June that he was changing their direction and nobody listened to him and even Mutton Chops sided with the others and not Jimmy. All Jimmy had who was loyal is Harrow. Luciano, Lansky, Capone, and Doyle had already bailed on him.

Terence Winter interview about killing Jimmy:
When did you first know that you were going to kill off Jimmy?
Probably at the very beginning of season two. The idea was to try and push things to their absolute limit, even if it makes it difficult for yourself and your writing team. If you take things to their logical extreme with the situation we created, Jimmy has betrayed Nucky, he tried to have him killed. You want to be honest about the storytelling. In the pilot, Jimmy told Nucky: “You can’t be half a gangster anymore.” We wanted with the first two seasons to follow that trajectory, where he goes full season from being the guy who doesn’t want to get his hands dirty to actually pulling the trigger himself. And what’s the strongest version of that? To pull the trigger on the very guy who told him, “You can’t be half a gangster anymore.” It’s like, “Guess what? You’re right. I can’t. And here’s me now fully becoming a gangster.” Anything short of Nucky doing it himself wouldn’t feel real, it wouldn’t be real. And it would be a cheat for us to say, “We want to keep our beloved character Jimmy Darmody alive.”

One of the things I wanted to do by design in the finale is make the audience pissed off [at the start of the episode]. I wanted people to say [when it seemed like Nucky and Jimmy would reconcile], “Oh great, after all that, it’s all going to be forgotten and Jimmy is going to be back in Nucky’s good graces.” I wanted them to think right up to the very end that Nucky is going to forgive him and take him back. It was a really hard decision. You’re sort of blowing up your own show, in some ways. Now we’re back in the writers room trying to figure out where we go from here without Jimmy Darmody.

Yeah, I can see that. I like to be contrarian sometimes and I also just think Jimmy was more of a killer/badass than Harrow (but I guess like you said Jimmy actually had emotion about it, rather than being a robot killer).

oh definitely.....I think Jimmy was a more badass/killer type than Harrow....I just didn't think that a badass/killer type is all he would be when his time was up.

I don't see Harrow as an Omar, I just genuinely like the entire character. And I disagree that he isn't conflicted about it; I think he hates himself and what he does when all is said and done, but he remains because of his place in the world and his loyalty to Jimmy. Also, once he sets his mind to it, he is ruthless but I think there's a lot of bottled up regret over that when he's alone. The deformed murderer set on beginning a family is interesting whether he's a badass or not.

Awesome first episode. I didnt like the whole way Rosetti killed the guy with the tire iron. I get you want to make a point that the guys a loose cannon that will kill at the drop of a dime, but it just seemed forced. That being said, I like the character. I wish they would say if hes based off a real life person or just completely made up.

I also like the Dean OBannion character. That guy played a great role. In real life Capones men kill him in his flower shop 2 years after that meeting.

And how do you NOT kill the guy belted to the fucking bed naked when he was the damn target?! That kid is nuts too, but man what a shitty shot...unless it's the paperboy at point blank range. Extra extra!

unless they pull a Inglorious Bastards on us, most of the characters were real people and their deaths are part of history...the one new character this season, Gyp Rosetti, is the only one I know of that is not based on a real person which makes his character more exciting for me

(I love how they got an actor with the same Bugs Bunny teeth as the actual Benny "Bugsy" Siegel to play him...)

Well, they did change Nucky's name from Johnson to Thompson. He's technically not the same guy, so it gives them some leeway to do something different with him.

Judge pretty much covered it, but it's a mobster surrounded by and involved with crime versus a pretty boy...skinny or not, Nucky has to be the favorite there especially since he was enraged and boiling up to that point for weeks.

The last two eps have been fucking outstanding and the show is CLEARLY on a whole new path now and you can understand the reasons for Jimmy being gone now more than ever. It's Capone, Chalky and Nucky vs the NYC crew and that nutty Gyp Rosetti? How Rothstein, Lucky and his pals come into play will surely be interesting...as Lucky basically is the reason this all has come to pass and Owen is dead.
