So when record company reps used to give coke to DJ's to play songs, it wasn't really payolla, since it wasn't coke dealers giving the coke to the DJ's?

i assumed he was talking about listeners giving cigars to get their names mentioned, which would not be payola. i was saying it would be payola if the cigar folks were giving him product to get better exposure for their product. the cigar folks would be the direct comparison to the record reps in this situation. now, if he's taking cigars to promote other products, i might have missed that.

I think he was talking about giving cigars for a chance to talk about their websites. In any case, I don't think it matters. Comparing old radio rules to today's radio rules is pointless.

I'd really like to try a good cigar, by the way. I've never had one.

Side note... Does anyone else have trouble keeping "sleeping bag incidents", straight with "driving home in the back seat of a car incidents", when it comes to gay R&F stories?

Payola is right up there with blue laws regarding Sunday morning alcohol sales.
