We get the government we deserve and unfortunately this woman is a couple of heartbeats away from the Presidency. In her view a nation of 300+ million people unemployed will be utopia. No wonder this woman is among the most despised in America
I guess things like businesses, Corporations, investments in Capital etc really dont drive an economy

What exactly is she saying that's incorrect or "insane"? If people have money from unemployment checks, they're spending the money somewhere. Its the same argument people use for tax cuts, only in this case, they're going to people who have lost their jobs, sometimes for no reason of their own. How else are they supposed to feed their families and pay their bills?

Unemployment is supposed to be a short term buffer to pay the necessities. What she is saying is absolute lunacy.
Sure the money will go to supermarkets and pharmacies but it doesnt drive an entire economy like what shes referring to

She's not saying it drives the entire economy. She says it's "one of the biggest stimuleses to our economy", which is poor grammar, but it's not the same as saying it's "driving" the economy. In her words, it's "spent quickly", "creates demand" and "creates jobs", all of which were goals of the stimulus checks, as well as the various tax cuts from the last administration.
And simply from a moral standpoint, what in the world is wrong with providing a means for people who have lost their jobs to live?

I didnt say it was wrong to have unemployment insurance. I pay into it every 2 weeks. Pelosi saying that its one of the biggest stimuli was flat out wrong. It has some impact but not a major force in driving the economy.

So would you rather have all those people sitting around with no money at all not spending and not out buying things?
As of now, 9.7% of the population is unemployed, or over 15 million people (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/07/01/eveningnews/main6638735.shtml), and Labor got 472,000 new claims for benefits, which was 13,000 more than the previous week. That's an awful lot of money those people could be spending.
And if they stop the benefits, that will affect something like 3 million people by the end of July. You're telling me that 3 million people with unemployment money WOULDN'T stimulate the economy or hurt it even worse if those benefits were gone?
It has some impact but not a major force in driving the economy.
Again, SHE NEVER SAID it was "driving the economy".

We agree that people get their checks and spend it on necessities, but unemployment is only a small percentage of someones former salary. It has some effect but not the huge effect like Pelosi states

It has a pretty huge effect when you take over 3 million people with money and stop giving them money.

i have 2 engineering degrees from college, have had a job for the last 10 years (multiple, not the same company) and a few months ago I found myself out of work because my company filed chapter 11.
while unemployment pays like shit, it 100% did help me out. i did have some savings, but it kept me from depleting that. also, every dollar i got from unemployment right went back out to door in rent, grocery, car payment etc.
i can see how people can/would stop paying bills if they lose their job.
on the same point, I think pelosi is fucking terrible and I hate most social programs. BUT, unemployment is something you pay into, something that has a finite end, and is not meant to keep people from working but subsidize them while they look for a job. i have always thought that it was not only a good thing, but a necessity.

Stimulus is now a buzz word....you know the rest.
The days of craddle to grave carrer are gone. The best way now is to hedge your future on yourself. Start a buisness while employed in your field.....that way, jobs will allready be available when your current job leaves/seperates. Doesn't have to be the same job, just somthing you enjoy......somthing to carry you through retirement, and the unemployed times.

I think your bias took over here. Her stance, if I may, is that all the unemployment money is spent. A lot of other stimulus initiatives do not immediately get money back into the economy.
You can disagree with her, but to act like this is an "insane" stance is...insane. Or simply political bias that clouds your every thought.
The caption to the video states, "Is Nancy Pelosi losing her mind..." Still just reading the headlines, leaving the substance to more intellectually curious people?
IMO. She is not saying that unemployment is good, she is saying giving money to unemployed people is better than giving money to people who may just sit on the money until the economy improves before they invest or spend it.

On paper unemployment seems like a bad idea. I am a fiscal conservative myself. But it seems to work OK in America, and it may have saved the economy. If only everyone had your infinite wisdom, WF.

people are paying into it. I am not opposed to it. Again it's not a driving factor and it has such a small effect.

agreed. i am fiscally conservative as well, but you pay into it every check for years, and only are able to use it for a short finite amount of time.

Moe nailed it. I hate when people bemoan the loss of the Founding Fathers, as if a slave owner who fathered children with them was a wonderful person. And his "purity" in laying out the blueprint for the nation's "indian removal" plan will be missed.
Stop pretending the Founding Fathers were fucking saints!

I disagree totally. Let's take this argument to the extreme: We end unemployment compensation insurance and plunge 10%+ of the nation into poverty/bankruptcy. What effect does that have on the economy?
This is not the time to fuck around with social safety nets like unemployment compensation.
Just lower the taxes on business. If they have more money to spend, they'll be able to hire more people to sell the products that no one is buying.

No, the will hold onto their money in this shitty economy. Expecting big business to do the right thing never really worked.

Like the fucking banks, who got bailed out to drive cash flow...then continued to tighten their lending policies.
If we want to help businesses grow, we need the banks to loosen up lending to deserving small business applicants.

Exactly. Those millionaire cocksuckers got billions in free money from the government. And what did they do with it? Instead of helping people stay in their homes they made sure their top guys got their bonuses.
Fuck the banks, I have no love for those cunts. We all know what they're all about. I can't wait for the economy to bounce back and their stuck with crumbling real estate properties they evicted people from. The houses could have been kept up by the owners but they'd rather force people out of homes than work with them through a rough patch in our economic history.

They were no better. The only difference is now being a politician is much more profitable. Back then, they left public service not as some grand selfless act, but because the offices didn't have the power or potential to grab corporate cash and jobs.

What a terribly regressive idea. Punishing hard-working public-sector employees because of politics?
Just hideous.
