There has been a lot of debate lately about whether Fez will ever return to his former radio greatness. This thread is not intended to perpetuate that endless discussion--it is meant to celebrate the accomplishments of the Great Interventionist.

Since the show is on vacation or a couple days and I'm an Audible subscriber, I'm stuck listening to random replays from December 2009 while I make a long interstate drive. I'd like to listen to some shows (the older the better) from the archive that highlight the Big Cat's radio excellence. I'm not talking about instances where Jan Brady made an appearance, or there was a Fezatorial, I'd just like to hear Strong Confident Fez Whatley for 3 full hours. If anyone can link to a full show you know is great, I'd very much appreciate the history lesson.

Thank you and God bless America.

The First Fez Hypnotism show.
or any Fez hypnotism show.
Hypnotism is fake, or rather say, the hypnotism that they are doing on the show is fake. OnA have stated that as well. As Ron says "If It's on Radio, It's a work." I don't mean like sleep hypnotism, or subconscious, but the scoot your ass across the floor shit is fake.

So, If Fez is hilarious during those hypnotism shows, It's obviously him being just naturally hilarious.

Nuff said.

Why is hypnotism so hard for some people to understand? It's not fake; but it's not forcing people to do something against their will.

"Stage" Hypnotism is fake. That's the kind that's done on the show.

Not only has it been said multiple times on the show, but Penn Jillette said it on O&A just recently. In addition, I have been a volunteer, on stage, for a hypnotist show. The show is only as good as the volunteers' willingness to play along. Anyone who's not willing to get into it "can't be hyponotized" and is sent back to their seat.

So what part of the R&F shows is fake?

It's interesting that people constantly bring up hypnotism shows as being "go to" shows for "the funny", when it all started at WJFK for the show. Yet, certain "radio experts" will tell you that the WJFK years sucked.

BTW... I highly recommend the shows from the whole J Dubs/Wonderboy window smashing incidents, when it comes to old shows to listen to. The first one would be the show where Dubs tricked Wonderboy into smashing his own car window. As a follow up, get the farewell Wonderboy show, when he was leaving for the Carolinas.

The idea is that you share a link to historic examples of prime time Fez. Just reminiscing about great moments in R&F history is not helpful.

Why is hypnotism so hard for some people to understand? It's not fake; but it's not forcing people to do something against their will.

Why? Because the public knowledge of hypnosis is based almost entirely on either cheesy stage shows and snakeoil hypnotherapy tapes. Neither necessarily has anything to do with genuine clinical hypnosis.

What they do is stage hypnosis, and whether or not Don applies real technique is pretty much a moot point, since all of the results achieved can be explained by simple suggestion. The only thing that matters is that Fez believes, all the other pieces fall into place after that.

There's certainly a delineation problem -- where does suggestion end and hypnosis begin? Short of hooking someone up to an fMRI, I don't know how you'd get an answer.

It MUST be real, because Fez is NEVER more RELAXED than during a Hypnotism Show.

Don should meet Fez every morning at Sirius...and relax him.

I started listening when they were at The Mighty WJFK and at the time Fez was very engaged and came up with his own bits like the Fezzatorial. People still made fun of him but he was able to fire back and hold his own. He was a lot more quick witted and funny, able to move from topic to topic with ease.

When they moved to Satellite it took me at least 2 years to pick up XM and when I finally did I was amazed because this wasn't the same Fez that used to crack me up on the local station. Still funny, just more crazy and the show leaned heavily on Ron and Dave (who I disliked since the first time I heard him on 3rd mike)

With the exit of Dave hopefully Fez will crawl back from the precipice of mediocrity but it may be too late to reverse the trend.

I can't prove Fez was funny but there was a time he was talking about topics other than his issues and it made me laugh at the time.

I can document this 1st hand. Back in the Washington days I called from NY, I listened underground...LOL...anyway, I called and confronted Fez on his views on the war and that they were less that and more about what we now call the secret.
He did not cry
He did not shy away
He did not scream
He did not meltdown in anyway
The guy founght back with humor and wit and facts.

Unsurprisingly, there is a glaring lack of specifics ITT.

I have shows dating back to 2001 and really haven't heard anything as funny as a throwaway Dave bit. Actually his characters on bad guest days on WJFK are pretty good and he improvs pretty well. These can actually be found right here on the .net in the file library. Definitely check them out.

Ronnie worked Fez great last week. I remember he once told Dave that you either have to bring the jokes or be the joke. Fez is the joke now. I was entertained as hell listening to Fez "be" the joke. He'll either hit rock bottom and recover, retire, or completely lose his mind.

I'm one of those people who thinks Dave is funnier than Fez at his best and that Dave is much better at creating conflict with peripheral characters, so I don't care whether or not Fezzie figures his shit out.

Regardless, god bless Ronnie B.

I find all of this pretty mind blowing. I was on here when Dave first got the job with R&F and people hated his guts. There are threads upon threads of Dave Hate eating up bandwidth. I was, and always will be, a Dave Hater.

I stopped listening to the show because it became apparent that Ron was going to shove that Red Headed frat boy down our throats like it or not.

While I was gone Ron actually managed to turn alot of people into Dave fans. Which to me just proves that a show I once thought funny had been reduced to a variant of a Morning Zoo Show with Ron playing Elvis Duran.

Now I have to read all these people who thought someday this would become the Ron and Dave show bitch about Fez.

I have listened to R&F since 2000 or 2001. In all those years Fez has provided years of laughter that Dave's flash in the pan run on the show could never touch.

Prove Fez was once great? Fuck you, prove he wasn't! I can get Daves brand of Frat Boy humor anywhere, but when the R&F show was at its height it was like a fine wine for educated listeners. Daves era is the Beer years hands down.

Many people say that the NY callers were better back in 2001 but I think the attitude of the show was different. It was a much more lighthearted, almost morning zoo type show. Ron was respectful of Fez's brand of humor, Fez contributed at least 50% to the show, and silly shit the callers called in with was embraced and ran with.

For example, in the week of 8/8/01, which just happens to be the week I grabbed from the archive, the following hilarious shows went down:

-AssMan (a 550lb listener) comes into studio and allows the staff to play 'pin the tail on the AssMan' with real pins

-a listener calls in and challenges Al Dukes to a water-drinking-without-pissing contest where Al Dukes puts his job on the line if he loses

-5 chicks are in the studio drinking, stripping, and playing a ridiculous contest put together and hosted by Al Dukes

-Ron and Fez put together a 'studio band' where listeners call in with their instrument to play on air and audition for the 'band'.

I'm not saying any of these things are more hilarious than today's show but they are outrageous concepts that would be dismissed instantly by today's show. I would encourage anyone to listen to a show from this era to see not only how much Fez used to contribute, but how the show itself (including Ron) has changed over the last decade.
