View Full Version : Is America really that divided?

Are we? You hear that we are from both sides of the aisle. Is that really the case though?
Maybe the wuestion is more, when haven't we been divided? When we've just entered a war? During a tragedy on our shores?
I think that, while we all will disagree on something, we all love our country*. Us disagreeing is a positive thing, not a negative thing, because the best answers usually lie somewhere inbetween.

If you watch the news, either conservative or liberal stations, they make it seem that Americans are divided on everything. That there is such disdain on both sides.
But when has that been the case? People disagree, but people have always disagreed. Why are people pushing this harder now?

Moderation would be better for both sides to meet a consensus. The Tea Party is far right and pushing moderates to the Independent Party. This could be a boost for that party should more of these types get in. And might also help in getting that consensus.

Yep.
Double yep.
The fact that there are so many media outlets that provide 100% corroboration for whatever you may believe, regardless of fact, makes consensus impossible to achieve. Im not blaming the "media" but free press might have actually hurt this country more than it helped it. There is no "truth" anymore. Just peoples preconceived notions, backed up by financially motivated entities.

Its good for the media. A divided issue is a catalyst to draw viewers.

Yes. Average freaks lately want to believe they belong to something.
Lib v Conserv
Dem v Repub
Palin v Obama
CoCo v Leno
Fez v Dave
These people don't believe that there are shades of gray and there are two sides to arguments sometimes both with merit, they don't even think for themselves and just blackball whatever the "other" team proposes or does.

I think is it bad that I do not think this would be the worst thing to happen?
Clearly we can not manage what we have got if it will happen.

Cable news is the new pro wrestling - everybody is a heel or a face. The vast majority of the population knows that neither party has the absolute correct answer to any issue.

You're an optimist
I find myself having more in common with the Tea Party people than liberals. Their hearts are in the right place; incumbents are the source of corruption and nepotism in DC. The sooner we hold civil servants accountable whether they're a Democrat or a Republican, the sooner we can have a moderately functional government.
