To make the show worse at the end they had some lame band and when one guy was talking he wasn't even on mic. Another segment I had to skip.

I generally try to go deep with my music, the avant garde shit is usually my cup of tea but I had to punch out on the opening song. I though it had potential to be cool but 30 seconds in the repetition got too much for me and I had to pull the cord.

It pains me to say it, but lets be honest, yesterdays show was a bust. A long interveiw with some self important chick who nobody cares about, and an hour set from a blues band nobody knows.
I've never even had the thought before that a R and F show was bad, but this time I did. But since they've been on XM I've heard every show, and downloaded and listened to most of their pre XM stuff, so one bad show in all that time is a pretty good record.

Yes, there was show after it. Not sure how long after the interview but that band came in. I didn't get to hear it so I'm not sure if it was a live on air interaction or another pre-recorded interview.

I went to lunch during the Anderson interview, not to intentionally skip the interview just worked out that way. That first song did nothing for me, I listened first minute or so, had to change the channel. Switched back hoping to hear North Americans, but still heard
"huh huh huh huh huh huh huh huh huh huh huh huh huh......................."
I thought the usual show, ichiban segment etc was pretty solid.
I got back from lunch and actually enjoyed the Vagabond Soles music. I thought they were strong.
I didn't enjoy it at all, and tuned out. I have a hard time listening to any artist/celebrity when they talk politics. But, the Robert Randolf interview was super! If you don't know him, check them out. He's got tons of live material on the Live Music Archive. And of course a NEW CD out

The artist shouldn't NEED to be different. An artist does what they do and the public chooses to consume it or not.
I haven't heard the interview yet but I'm a big fan her work - and find her to be wholly pleasing in an aesthetic sense. That's Kant's sense of aesthetics though, I'm not sure we all follow the same philosophical notions of art.

OK, here is my response, better laid out:
Ron has done a ton of interviews with Grade Z people we don't know or care about. The hope is to appeal to more people. Just because you haven't heard of them or they are unappealing to you doesn't mean payola.
Besides, payola as it was defined in Allen Freed's day is a dead concept. It's a lot more shades of gray now, instead of money under the table for spins.
Besides, her label is an indy. They don't have any money to create payola ANYWAY.

Ron has always just had on who he wants to interview or interesting people that were available in the building for different reasons. Why are we doing a conspiracy theory discussion?
It may not have been everyone's favorite interview, fine. I won't fault you for not liking it, it wasn't one of my favorites either. I had no idea who she was and it went on far too long.
But to start suspecting Ron of shit with this one interview? I'd say more often than not I don't know the person Ron's interviewing but I usually give it a chance because he's a great interviewer and he can get me interested in what the person is talking about.
In other words, I trust Ron to bring us interesting interviews. If you don't, then don't listen. No problems either way.

Um, Laurie Anderson is pretty far from a "no name" artist. She's pretty well respected in the avante garde world. I maybe the oldest person on the board. I remember her from the early 70's. Wasn't a fan of her though but I respect a person to perform music the way they see and feel. it I didn't punch out, but then I did some stuff around the house from time to time and would listen. To each his own. My husband was a musician, he had some friends in others bands where I thought WTF. But I respected them. Shit, I remember seeing Todd Rundgren with an old bf. It was in a small theatre in NYc aroung 1980. I think it was called a Man and his Piano. From what I heard he was the 1st musician to use video behind him. It totally freaked me out.

You're a cunt, how about that? Just because you don't know her, doesn't mean shit. You think anyone knows who the fuck you are? She's extremely well respected as an artist whether you like her or not.

And if it was a half hour with Justin Bieber then maybe there could be a discussion. But it wouldn't make any sense to spend money or favors to push a woman who has absolutely no expectations to sell records. What they offer would have to be proportionate to their return, which would be a ludicrous business proposition. I'm saying recognize when someone is baiting you, then dont take that bait.

Isn't that exactly the point? I dont think Mr. Anus is making a dramatic point, he's saying explicitly and repeatedly that Laurie Anderson was on Ron and Fez in exchange for money or favors. If anything Laurie Anderson was the favor for some other bullshit.
She has no interest in selling a Beiber amount of records or having Gaga levels of exposure. She, and everyone around her, understand how narrow her audience is, her style is actually defined by being challenging and inaccesible. If you were going to break the law and increase her profile you should probably start by putting her on a music chanel, one whose audience is not primarily in the New York area where she probably has her highest level of exposure already, and dont waste your resources on a guy who is obviously tickled to interview her already. It would be the most poorly thought out case of fraud ever to happen in radio.
I've been listening to the show on audible for a few months and am usually about a day or two behind, so I saw this thread before I heard the interview. I have to admit when I found that Laurie Anderson was going to be interviewed, I groaned and actually thought about skipping that day's show. I had heard of her and thought that she was one of those "out there" artsy types based on what others had said about her.
I listened to the show because I knew that there would be more to it than just the interview. The opening song intrigued me and made me want to hear the interview.
No, I can't see myself becoming a big Laurie Anderson fan, but I heard some interesting stuff. Ron always manages to make any interview good.

How about Ron interviews Willie Nelson - now that's one I wouldnt want to miss!
I didn't like her but liked the Blues guy.
It doesn't really matter though, if Ron wants to interview someone he will

If you like Anderson a little, but it's just too out there and lacks melody, try Four Tet and or Sigur Ros.
Take a listen.

Sigur Ros is some amazing stuff. Did you like Jonsi's solo stuff?
I'll have to check out Four Tet.

I dug the music and the interview.
Another win in my book for Ronnie B.
Never watched "No Reservations" until after the Bourdain interview.
Since then, it's become my favorite show on television.
Same kind of thing happened with Alton Brown and "Good Eats".

Wasn't quite my thing but I listened for a good 25 minutes or so before skipping over it. I'm one to pretty much instantly get annoyed when I start hearing a lot of political stuff so that was one of the reasons I skipped past the rest. Still though, anyone who thinks there's some big conspiracy is just plain wrong. Just the fact that she's married to Lou Reed who Ron absolutely loves is reason enough to know that he had a legitimate interest in having her on the show plus being generally into her stuff.

Hahaha - so on point.
Also, I didn't see this mentioned yet but Laurie Anderson is married to Lou Reed. Perhaps Ron found her via his love of Lou and when given the chance to sit with her, said yes.

Speaking of Lou Reed, Ron made a comment a couple of weeks ago that kind of irked me. It was a discussion about what albums you'd like to see performed live in their entirety. Rorschach called in and saying that he'd love to see The Velvet Underground & Nico live, and Ron acted like he was blown away that someone from Alabama would like VU. I realize it was a joke, but would people please stop acting like The Velvet Underground is some secret handshake of coolness already? The secret is out, folks.

Laurie Anderson was interviewed today on NPR and has been on other media outlets. She'd pushing a new album, I doubt its cause Ron likes her god awful music (if you can call it that).

Wait. So you think the interview was forced on him? I sincerely doubt that was the case.

I didn't listen to the interview or the show that day but just from reading this thread it would seem she has a new album and is on a press tour and maybe Ron got to interview somebody he likes because of that.

I liked the interview, I thought she was interesting. Robert Randolph intrigued me as well and I bought his album as a result of the interview.
Over the years I've checked out a ton of books, movies and music they've talked about. What more can you ask from a radio show?
Laurie Anderson's music isn't really my thing but I can appreciate why someone would be into it.

I don't like all the interview subjects. But, I do like being exposed to people that are off the mass media circuit.
If I want to hear what a prankster Clooney is, or that Stairway is the best song of all time, I know where to look. R&F pleasantly surprise me.
