View Full Version : Walking Out During a Movie

Yesterday I went to a 10:15am showing of Inception. It was the first showing of the day and because it was early, it wasn't a very large crowd.

I saw at least 5 people get up throughout various parts of the movie. I'm assuming to use the restroom, smoke or get snacks. I didn't follow everyone, so I don't know if some people left for good.

With a movie as detailed on plot as Inception was, I don't see how anyone could leave and then figure what's going on upon returning back.

Now I understand the movie was 2.5 hours and for some that might be too long to sit.

Throughout my entire movie watching existence, I have never left the theater during a movie. This includes an 11-year-old Dan that actually shit his pants during Jewel of the Nile.

Even at home, if for any reason there's an interruption (bathroom break, snack break, answer door/phone) the movie gets paused, whether it's on TV or DVD.

I don't want to miss a thing.

How about you? Do you leave the theater?

All of this is based on first time viewings. I can see if you've already seen the film, then it's okay to walk out cause you already know what you're missing.

Was it during that scary mudslide part?! I don't blame you at all.

With a movie like inception I don't see how anyone could walk out then expect to catch up with the movie when they come back.

I do not go to the movies very often but I have a bad habit of drinking my gigantic soda too fast and need to relieve myself before the end of the movie. I just try to do it during a slow part of the movie. I have heard that there is a website that lists times to go to the bathroom during movies, don't know the name of it though.

Found it.

For Inception they recommend leaving at the 55 minute mark (4 minute break) and/or the 75 minute mark (another 4 minute break).

Whoever picked those 2 times to leave Inception must be pulling a joke. Those were two incredibly important scenes they say it's ok to walk out on. Especially that second part. That's arguably the most important scene of the movie!

I was about an hour in and had to pee, but realized I'd be totally fucked if I slipped out. The last time this happened? The Dark Knight .

I dislike an interruption in a movie or show when people start talking to you, so I agree. But a few years ago, I saw the Manchurian Candidate and it was the absolute worst movie I have ever seen, I would have walked out on it if my companions had expressed the same feeling. My mom is notorious for talking during shows and then asking what she missed and during an explanation, ends up missing more and it just snow balls. If I can't get beyond an interruption, I will give up on a movie and walk away from it before I get too much of it in my head.
Its one of the reasons I generally watch movies alone at home.

I never leave the theater during a movie. Part of the reason why I never buy snacks and drinks is so I won't have to get up to pee and miss 5 minutes of the movie.

I realize it's a hack premise, but I've never understood how people justify spending close to $10 on popcorn and a soda at the movies. Maybe it was being raised by cheap parents that did it, but I was just never programmed with this need to munch on overpriced popcorn during a movie. I can go two hours without eating or drinking anything.

I'm the same way. I dont want to have to hold a pee through half the movie, and I refuse to buy stuff thats so overpriced. I can just go two hours without eating or drinking, its not part of the movie going experience for me, and actually if I'm crunching on something i'm going to miss some dialogue.

Its really standard procedure now for kids to sit through the entire trailer reel and then bolt for the door to buy popcorn the second the credits start. I dont get it.

I try to never leave a movie once it starts but then again Inception looks so uninteresting that I would probably fall asleep if I was forced to go see it. If I have no plan on seeing this movie in theaters, dvd, online or anywhere else. Maybe it was the coming attractions but it really looks bad.

I usually dont but if I have to, I sprint. Me and my wife are also pretty good at catching each other up pretty quickly once we get back.

I VERY rarely go to the theater. The last time I did was a year ago, when I was visiting my son for family day weekend at his Army basic training camp. I took him out to see the Star Trek movie. It was hot as hell, and I (like you) can't stand paying so much for snacks and drinks. But with the heat, I HAD to get a shit load of water to rehydrate.

Of course, I ended up needing to piss halfway through. I was loving the movie, and didn't want to miss any of it. Especially since the design of the theater required a round trip walk that would have taken forever. I managed to hold it until the moment the ending credits started, and damn near had to run to make it to the bathroom.

There is nothing comfortable about the theater experience to me. The seats suck, people around you ruin it, kids cry, expensive snacks and inability to pause and relieve oneself at that price makes it difficult for me to justify going to a theater. If I'm interested in a movie, I generally avoid reviews and discussions about it until it comes out on dvd and then watch it in comfort.

The theater experience is dead. Bringing us 3d is only putting a slight delay on the ineveitable.

I rarely go, and the last time, at the theater around the block from Opie's bar, the schwoogies on staff didn't turn the lights off, and the theater was empty, aside from four people. I complained AND got my money back. Luckily, a manhole blew up next to starbeans up the block, and knocked out power, but I got my fucking money back. The mexican that managed the theater was a cocksucker, though. I got my money back AND went back to watch the rest of the movie. He was pissed. I told him to call the cops and they will take care of me. That shut his fucking face up right away. And I was the only one that got my money back.

I disagree. The movie experience is not dead. It won't begin to recover until they stop abusing the customer like they've been for the last 30 years.
It will require lower fee's for veiwing and snacks......and I won't tell you the rest as its a project I'm seriously considering.

The theater experience is moving home, finally, and the movie companies are even cutting the throats of the theaters by running everything on short cycles, right to DVD.

There are too many theaters anyhow.
