View Full Version : Gov. Christie to announce complete overhaul of gaming industry

Pledging to turn Atlantic City into "Las Vegas East," New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie today said he is asking the state Legislature to approve this fall the takeover of the casino and entertainment district.
The plan will include suggestions for “enticing new entrants to build both gaming and non-gaming attractions that will increase demand in the City,” the report said.
Regarding New Jersey’s Meadowlands and Monmouth Park racetracks reacted Gov. Chris Christie plans to propose privatizing the horse racing industry. The proposal could result in the sale or shutdown of the parks.
The governor also addressed the future of the stalled Xanadu entertainment project at the Meadowlands.
"There are two options, make it work or tear it down,” he said. “I'm not prepared to endorse option two.”
Someone made the below comment, thought it was interesting:
This is a huge step backwards and a giant mistake. The world of gambling in the country is evolving at a fast rate, but instead of evolving, we're gonna dump money into a dying city, while letting our golden opportunity pass us by.
Atlantic City is dying. It's too late to save it. Just taking over the boardwalk will accomplish nothing. The whole ... See Morecity needs to be made over. It will never be 'family friendly' as long as the city itself is a dangerous ghetto. Whether we allow gambling at the Meadowlands or not, Atlantic City as we know it will cease to exist within 10 years. It is outdated, poorly run and it's time has past. It's time to look forward, not backwards.
Xanadu NEEDS to be made into a casino. This will solve a lot of problems. First, it will solve the obvious Xanadu problem. I'm certain that investors will be lining up to build a casino in the heavily populated north jersey area, just minutes from NYC, with an existing rail line already in place.
A Meadowlands casino will create countless new jobs, raise a ton of tax revenue, and be a huge boost to local businesses in the area like hotels, gas stations and restaurants. If we built a convention center on the premesis, then those benefits multiply.
There are already huge numbers of people in the area who pass right by the Meadowlands on their way to Pennsylvania to gamble. Those are dollars that could be and should be spent right here in NJ.
Additionally, a Meadowlands Casino would save horse racing in NJ, which the benefits are well known, such as saving jobs and preserving farmland in the state.
I understand that a Meadowlands Casino would not be in the best interest of Atlantic City, but we could also grant them concessions. First, they would no longer have to subsidize horse racing, which would save them $30 Million a year. Also, we should allow Sports Betting, and make it exclusive to Atlantic City, which will provide them with a selling point that a Meadowlands Casino wouldn't be able to offer. A sports book would bring in a lot of new revenue for Atlantic City.
These are all great ideas that would be win\win for everyone involved. The Xanadu nightmare would be over. Horse Racing would survive and prosper. The state would collect enormous tax revenue from a new casino, as well as helping the local economy in a time we desperately need it. And Atlantic City will be open to a whole new revenue stream with sports betting, and free of the burden of subsidizing horse racing.
But instead we're gonna allow horse racing to die, while Atlantic City continues to deteriorate and a prime location in north jersey sits vacant, while new state of the art casino's spring up all around us in neighboring states, making money that should be being spent in NJ.
Completely unacceptable.

this guys post was going so well until the part i bolded. I now cant seriously consider anything this jerkoff says cause he obviously has no facts. aside from oregon, Delaware, and Nevada, sports betting is FEDERALLY illegal. NJ could legalize sports betting in Atlantic City, and that move would be followed but a cut off of all federal funding and a kick in the ass right out of the union

Nevada is no longer part of the union?
I think the point he was making was that if NJ wants to be the "Vegas of the East" they should get the exemption that Nevada gets.

when the federal government banned sports betting nationally, it grandfathered in the states that already had laws allowing it. That was only Nevada, Delaware, and Oregon. So those 3 can still do it but only in the way the laws were. thats why they didnt let delaware open sports books, cause the laws were only for parlay games

It’s a long ways away and lots can & will change, with that said, if the Republicans want to take a V.P. candidate from a state they can carry (and more likely a state they would not have carried without the V.P. candidate, an Ohio / Florida type sate) Christie is out.

I do think this is a step backwards. As it is, Pennsylvania has legalized table games, so Bethlehem and Pocono Downs, who were already putting up impressive numbers, will saturate this area's gambling even further. Not to mention Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, and the eventual LI casino. The solution for Atlantic City is to balance their economy, not bury themselves in the one industry that succeeds there. Unless they plan on offering something that Bethlehem and Foxwoods don't, then what's the point?

Alright, AC sucks. Then how the fuck is "Privatizing" anything gonna fix it?
The surest way to fuck taxpayers and public employees is by privatizing services/buildings/etc. Its a trend across the nation and has nothing to do with New Jersey being the special snowflake that you believe it is.

AC doesnt suck. Casinos in a shore town? Its beautiful. And anyone that actually goes there can tell you its 10 times nicer then it was 10 years ago.
They have 2 major problems. One, there is this giant recession going on...they are losing tons of business because alot of the regular blue collar players that would go down there just cant afford it now. And two, with PA legalizing table games, they are set to lose a TON of Philly business not just to Philadelphia Park, but also to other casinos like the Sugerhouse casino they are opening up right in the city of Philly.
Their summer business will still do great Im sure, but the winter is going to be very tough for these casinos.
Its a shame about the sports book, but around here I can find a bookie easier then I can find a mechanic.
I still love Christie. The guy is awesome. I hope he keeps up what hes doing and doesnt decide to fuck South Jersey in order to help the Meadowlands.

i love the short sitedness. The problem with AC isnt that people from NJ dont go. They still do for the most part. Even from me, its about the same to AC as it is the ones in CT. Most Jersey people do go to AC.

Atlantic City is pretty crappy last time I was down there. Move too far from the casino's and you're probably gonna get jacked the fuck up.
I never understood the point of gambling. The casinos have to win a vast majority of the time to make it worth staying open, but people still go there and dump money into games they know they shouldn't win statistically.
I know people who go and say they have fun, I just don't see it. I guess it's the whole "experience" and not just the money lost?

its the time. You save money up and spend it on vacation. Some people choose to make the "vacation" a casino. You spend some money, drink for free, have a great time, and its pretty cool. And there is that small chance you win something. if I go down to a casino and just break even it feels like I came out ahead cause I got the time and the free drinks and still have the money. with a good income
and no kids!
Its definitely easier in that situation. I havent hit the casino since I bought my house. But thats because the economy is hitting my pocket hard. If things bounce back I could easily make a casino night once in awhile.
But for me thats bringing $300 to play craps with. I dont stay overnight because I dont live far. And if I want to grab a drink and relax after there are places like the outside bar at Trump Marina to hang out. Or I can just drive 15 minutes to another shore.
And yes alot of the city outside the casinos is bigtime ghetto, but they also have small pockets of neighborhoods with million dollar houses owned by judges, doctors and such.
