Man I saw a report on this the other night and it just freaks me out. Hate these fuckers and had to deal with them a lot when I set up medical studies in mental institutions and clinics around the NY/NJ metro area in a past life. I brought NOTHING in to the places that had problems in these areas, and never felt clean after leaving for some time. Thankfully, nothing ever happened, but I still travel a lot and stay at hotels a lot. The good news is the higher level hotels are much cleaner in these areas, but not 100%. I live for the Westin, Hyatt Regency, W, and Renaissance hotels.

There's apparently a really serious bedbug problem in Manhattan. Our next door neighbors in our old building had them (they brought them from their old building). We had a scare and thought we had them and had to go through the laborious process of laundering and bagging up every piece of clothing, stuffed animal etc., bagging our mattresses, bringing in the exterminator. The exterminator told us that we likely didn't have them, which may have seemed like an awful lot of work for nothing, but it's far preferable to having to deal with the problem, which can literally take years to get rid of.

Bed bugs were all but eradicated from the US until our recent immigration explosion from Mexico and other countries. Like Mikey said, it's a disgusting amount of work to do if they get to your place, and the style of living in NYC doesn't help no matter how clean/safe you try to be. All it takes is one fucking dirty neighbor, or hell even an unlucky one, and it can get ur whole fucking building. I
live in a townhouse, so it's not exactly the safest place either. I'm looking for homes right now, but even that isn't safe bc all it takes is one bad hotel room where they get in your bags and waaalaaa! There goes months and months of your sanity and so much time we all don't really have. I literally freak myself out trying to sleep (itch like crazy/psychosomatic) before meetings where I have to present my data and or proposals and it sucks.

bed bugs have been a problem among the upper crust in manhattan for YEARS. i went to college in the UES and all along park ave, you'd see these *very* expensive mattresses stacked up in the garbage areas from people trying to rid themselves of them. the worst part is, people would take them not knowing that they were infested or not caring and looking to probably resell them.
its been a "secret problem" for a long time, since at least the early 2000's. im surprised it took so long to come out to the general public.

wow really, spoon?
so it could have nothing to do with the fact that these people have access to travel to the places where bedbugs may still be an issue and therefore could be bringing things back with them? if it was the "immigrant population" wouldnt this be rampant in my work location or office (as i deal with some of the low income/drug using population on a daily basis)

I'm not being racist misti, it's what every report basically has surmised. It may not have occurred up here at first, but reports have stated the spread pattern slowly has spread north along the same path the killer bees were supposed to follow. It took off here more so bc rich people hide it and it spreads more due to it. It's not really a socioeconomic thing, more of a lack of control mechanisms in other countries and our expanded use of DDT long after it was proven very dangerous while it was banned earlier elsewhere. You know me Misti, come on. Really?

which is why i was so disappointed and confused when i read it.
the explaination you give now makes a little more sense. the way it was originally expressed made you sound a little crazy. you didnt state that there were reports that said x-y-z, etc. it came across as a blanket statement that it was those 'filthy brown people' who made it happen. given the themes of certain threads around here, that statement would have fit right in.
and also, can i see the articles/reports whatever. i'd be interested in reading them and seeing how they line up with what ive been seeing in the garbage patterns, etc of the park ave elite for the last 10 years
Apparently, it's also a problem in my hometown. (http://www.nhregister.com/articles/2010/07/30/news/metro/doc4c5248a6c2207510224156.txt)

its funny that you should say that (and the following statement does not apply to spoon) because there have been a few too many times in my life that ive been around people who i thought were smart too, but then have come out with a remarkably racist statement only to follow it up with: ", but dont worry misti. you're one of the good ones."
anyway. this is off topic...
but dont worry misti. you're one of the good ones."
I say the same thing about Yankee fans.

Shattered, shattered
Love and hope and sex and dreams
Are still surviving on the street
Look at me, I'm in tatters!
I'm a shattered
Shattered
Friends are so alarming
And my lover's never charming
Life's just a cocktail party on the street
Big Apple
People dressed in plastic bags
Directing traffic
Some kind of fashion
Shattered
Laughter, joy, and loneliness and
sex and sex and sex and sex
Look at me, I'm in tatters
I'm a shattered
Shattered
All this chitter-chatter,
chitter-chatter, chitter-chatter 'bout
Shmatta, shmatta, shmatta -- I can't
give it away on 7th Avenue
This town's been wearing tatters
(shattered, shattered)
Work and work for love and sex
Ain't you hungry for success,
success, success, success
Does it matter? (Shattered) Does it matter?
I'm shattered.
Shattered
Ahhh, look at me, I'm a shattered
I'm a shattered
Look at me- I'm a shattered, yeah
Pride and joy and greed and sex
That's what makes our town the best
Pride and joy and dirty dreams and
still surviving on the street
And look at me, I'm in tatters, yeah
I've been battered, what does it matter
Does it matter, uh-huh
Does it matter, uh-huh, I'm a shattered
Don't you know the crime rate is
going up, up, up, up, up
To live in this town you must be tough,
tough, tough, tough, tough!
You got rats on the west side
Bed bugs uptown
What a mess this town's in
tatters I've been shattered
My brain's been battered,
splattered all over Manhattan
Uh-huh, this town's full of money grabbers
Go ahead, bite the Big Apple,
don't mind the maggots, huh
Shadoobie, my brain's been battered
My friends they come around they
Flatter, flatter, flatter, flatter,
flatter, flatter, flatter
Pile it up, pile it high on the platter
