View Full Version : Chelsea Clinton's Wedding

Why have we, as a culture, started to treat and regard Presidents and former Presidents and their families as if they are royalty and worthy of our public attention like the spectacle of Chelsea Clinton's wedding? Is it because of HER or because of who was going to the wedding? Maybe I have been under a rock, but how long has this been going on? Or, is it a slow news week or something? The coverage is mind boggling.

Didn't one of Bush's daughters get married quietly and with dignity? This obsession of the Clintons to draw attention to themselves is fatiguing.

I'm waiting for the day Chelsea moves to an odd place and then decides to run for Congress (not because she wants to, of course, but because "everybody" is urging her to).

The only interest I have in this wedding is the fact that she had it in my favorite little "i'm going to go hide in the woods" vacation town, I'm sure it's ruined now.

The wedding cost btwn 3-5million

Its their money and they can spend it however they want, however when the clintons lecture us about greed its the height of hypocrisy. They talk about class warfare etc but theyre the ones who spent all this money on a wedding and now are buying a 9 million dollar mansion in Bedford. I guess Chappaqua wasn't lilywhite enough for them

Which, let's be honest, are going to be majority white.

I remember when the Clintons campaigned in 1992, they were making a big deal about public schools. People in DC were hoping that they'd send Chelsea to one of DC's public schools. So where did Chelsea end up going? Sidwell Friends: an elite private school in one of the more well-to-do parts of DC. There was a "controversy" about that for about 5 minutes.

Harlem is getting more vanilla. People who cant afford to live in Midtown, Gramercy park or triBeca , which include a lot of white professionals are living in Harlem. I feel safe on 125th St walking from the #4 train to Metro north from the Yankees game. Within the last 10 years or so Harlem, while its not Scarsdale has improved a lot.

Ultimately, those types of issues are window dressing- for these people, I think it is really more about policies you fight and advocate for. i don't think you could saw when comparing clinton's policies or appointments vs. bush's that clinton advocated more for the non-lilywhite faction of the country.

also, the fact that bush daughter didn't have a big wedding wasn't out of some desire to show restraint, it is just their family's personality- everyone knows bush does like to party (anymore)- instead, after a long business day of biking, he liked to go sleep early, and did enjoy going out for diner/theater/cultural activities at night.

Well said. I don't hate Chelsea, who by all accounts hates the spotlight, but rather the disgusting, voyeuristic, reality-TV show society we have become.

I read this quote from some idiot who was standing outside where the wedding took place:

“This is exciting. There’s so much trouble in the world but this Saturday everything stops just for this wedding,” said Anne McConnell, who’d secured a strategically placed bench opposite the Beekman in hopes of seeing members of the Clinton family.

“It’s just a shame it’s not on TV,” she said. “This should be live on TV like Princess Diana’s wedding.”

Right. Because Chelsea is "royalty" and we all are entitled to see what goes on in other people's lives.

Though its obviously not at the level when they were in office.

It was lifetime protection for ex-Presidents and their spouses. In 1997 Congress changed the rule so now its only 10 years after holding office.

Means that Clinton is the last President to receive lifetime Secret Service protection.

Speaking of politician's kids and avoiding the spotlight...

From Palin's wikipedia page:

"Palin now works with the speakers' circuit and will ask between $15,000 and $30,000 for each appearance. She has signed with Single Source Speakers. She is listed on the speaking group's website as available for conferences, fundraisers, special events and holidays, as well as women's, youth, abstinence and "pro-life" programs."

"Palin made a guest appearance as herself on the July 5, 2010 episode of ABC Family's teenage drama, The Secret Life of the American Teenager"

Please, let's stop acting like Clinton was acting nobly when he put his Presidential office in Harlem.

If you remember, he originally was going to open his office elsewhere and there was an outcry because the rent was so high (the government pays for this space). Hillary was running for the Senate, on her way to the Presidency, and didn't need the bad publicity (I'm sure they hoped it would help with the black vote turn-out too).

This too, but mainly what pennington said:

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/02/13/nyregion/criticized-on-office-rent-clinton-looks-to-harlem.html
Faced with a barrage of criticism for his decision to rent lavish office space in Manhattan, former President Bill Clinton yesterday abandoned his plans to move into the 56th floor of a Midtown skyscraper. He is now looking uptown, at more modest space on Harlem's main shopping boulevard, with equally panoramic views.

Officials at the General Services Administration, which oversees office space for former presidents, said yesterday that Mr. Clinton's office had notified them that he was no longer interested in Carnegie Hall Tower, where he had planned to rent the 56th floor for $738,700 a year.

Yesterday morning, Mr. Clinton's staff met with the owners of a newly renovated office building at 55 West 125th Street, between Lenox and Fifth Avenues, and toured the vacant top floor of the 14-story building. The asking rent for the 7,000-square-foot space is $30 a square foot, compared with $89 at Carnegie Hall Tower. The total annual rent would be $210,000.

Statistically, absolutely. However it would be much, much more likely for a 44-year old woman to have a child with DS.

Another reason not to touch this story.....science!

A bit of data on this.....

I will tear the shit out of her mother's politics, I will question her and Levi's "grown-up" decisions...however I will not vilify an underage child of a politician for being born into the wrong family.

That's a far cry from asswipes burning in hell.

Let's remember the context of that one too. Nobody was vilifying an underage girl for her existence....rather they were going after a stupid "conspiracy theory". I thought the whole thing was asinine from the start.

I trust that if I go back in the Juneau Juno thread I'll find you admonishing the people making comments about Bristol/Trig/Trip/Apple/Moon Unit Palin, right?

There is also a big difference between calling a politician's daughter ugly and pointing out the hipocrisy of a politician that wants to promote abstinence over condoms and deny a women's right to chose having a teenage daughter have an unwanted pregnancy out of wedlock.

Yea, its beautiful there in the summer.

The beaches were always great because its on the mediteranian, but they put a ton of money on the resorts there.

They use the beaches as bait to lure in the girls for the white slave trade.
