I want to share my pictures and music with a computer in another room with out putting everything on a flash drive and physically moving it.
I have a wireless network. The computer with all the stuff is vista and the place I want to send it to is XP if that matters
Can I do this and if so how can it be done?

It is possible; I used to be able to do this. But due to the idiotic nature of wireless networking, I can no longer do this even though nothing has changed. Your best bet with wireless networks is to not attempt anything, even networking. If you manually behead a chicken, and draw arcane symbols with the blood on your face, then make a circle of salt around the router and keep a burning smudge of sage next to the modem for at least 24 hours a day during the new moon, you may be able to pull this off once or twice before the whole thing fails.

After I ve done that where would I look on the XP machine to find them?

right click on the folder and go to sharing and security. allow to share the folder. name it something you will remember.
then from the other computer, in windows explorer type \\"computernamehere"\"foldernamehere"
computer name is the name of the pc that is sharing, the folder is whatever you named it.

I tried this (http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-setup-LAN-between-XP-and-Vista-PCs) method a while ago and it worked. The problem occurred on moving large folders and files across the wireless network. When the connection was even momentarily dropped, the whole transfer process got fucked. What file size in total are you trying to move?

The files are quite large. I have at least 100 gigs of music and a couple dozen of pics which is why I would love to share them instead of move

Is there any way you can hard wire them via the router using Cat-5 cables for the file transfer?

I can but I wanted to see what the wireless network was capable of.
I would love it if i could just play my music effortlessly from one comp to another but it seems like that is too much to ask from Microsoft

Mine drops throughout the day. In any event, I understood this to be a one time move of a bunch of content from one one machine to another. If you are looking to just access (not copy) the content on the XP machine using the Vista machine then wireless might work. The CompName\FolderName on the XP machine like NICK described should work.

ive never had my HOME network drop out.
Internet, is also very sparse but you dont need that for LAN.
To find the files through xp just "explorer" My computer and look at network places

Yeah that's what happened to me. I wanted to get files off an older XP machine up to a Vista machine and was able to share/find the XP box from Vista. I shared the root of C: and then went to copy My Downloads, My Docs, Desktop, etc. one by one and it always crapped out even tho it was just the home network.

Ive messed with this for 3 hours and I dont know what.
Ive shared everything on the vista machine. Ive put things in and out of the shred folder on the vista machine and nothing
It should have to be this laborious to hear a song
Im just going to move the stuff with a flash drive it will be easier and faster

Wait, you want to share things on the Vista machine and use them on the XP machine or vice versa?

So, on the XP machine, when you do a Tools/Map Network Drive.../Browse
can you see the Vista ComputerName anywhere in there?
This is all after you've turned on Network discovery, File Sharing, pubic folder sharing, etc in Network and Sharing area on the Vista machine.

I'm not sure what turning on all of this stuff in Vista does when you're connected to the Internet in terms of attack vulnerability.

This may be a bit laborious (but easier than flash drives), but there is another method for dummies like us to transfer files between computers. Sign up to dropbox, an online storage service. They give you 2 free gigs, but you can buy more. Put it on both machines, and it will set up a folder on both called My Dropbox. Anything you put in that folder will upload to your account, and also automatically download onto your other machine. Then just move it out of there to free up the space. I use it to transfer between 3 computers, an itouch, and an ipad.

It's been a long time since I've set up an XP machine at home, but getting a home network setup should not be as labor intensive as you've described. To Microsoft's credit, Windows 7 has greatly simplified things (Vista had some nice improvements as well).
First off, you need to put your computers in the same Workgroup. On your XP machine, Right-Click on My Computer, click on Properties, and on the Computer Name tab, put in a Workgroup name (Home, Workgroup, whatever). On Vista, make the same change. Also, give each of your computers a name.
On your Vista machine, go to the Network and Sharing Center and adjust your Sharing Settings. Enable Discovery and turn on Sharing. I think it automatically shares your Media folders, but I may be confusing it with Win7.
At this point if you go to Network Neighborhood or My Network Places (can't keep the names straight), you should be able to see your computers listed. You can also test by going to the Start Menu, clicking on Run, and typing in \\ComputerName.

I had everything set up as you described but the computers but they were not in the same work group, once I changed that it was easy peasy

I suggest getting everything you need transferred asap. I, too, once had a 3-hour victory overy my network, but as I said before, the sharing ceased to work for no reason.

Well I was feeling so superior for a while there because the whole thing was working but as of yesterday its gone kablewy
I no longer show "My network places" as an option on the XP start menu and when I ask to see work group computers it tells me that I do not have permission
When it worked I loved it but when it doesn't it is so frustration and I want to destroy Microsoft
Im going to start from scratch tomorrow and see if I can fix it
