In every single show I've seen on Animal Planet, Discovery, or History Channel that involves animals that are in the mating season, it never looks consentual. You always see the male running down the female till she finally gives up and lets him mount. Quickly after the female runs. Definately annoyed, and possibly scarred for the rest of her life.

Just another showing that the animal kingdom is a fucked up place. Except for penguins. I guess they're alright.

I'm with you on this one.

Since consent seems to be a non-starter, maybe a more general notion of rape might be having sex with someone else's mate. I'd be interested in seeing how that works out in more social species.

A lot of birds go through the whole courtship display nonsense in order for the female to choose her mate. Mammals understand that dancing around like a faggot is not a productive use of time, so rape is the preferred strategy.

Some are, some aren't. In one episode of Life, it had some animal that is so rare to encounter a mate, that it can't risk being rejected in courting, so it simply rapes the female. In another, there was a bird who, in order to impress a mate would construct these fascinating works of art and the female would pick between several males with different displays. It was fascinating.
