JUNEAU, Alaska – A plane carrying nine people — including former Sen. Ted Stevens and former NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe — crashed in southwest Alaska, killing five people on board, authorities said Tuesday.
It was unclear whether Stevens or O'Keefe were among the dead.
Reports from officials in Alaska were that nine people were aboard the aircraft and that "it appears that there are five fatalities," NTSB spokesman Ted Lopatkiewicz told The Associated Press in Washington.
A U.S. government official told The Associated Press that Alaska authorities have been told that Stevens, a former longtime Republican senator, was on the plane. The official, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, says Stevens' condition is unknown.

Conspiracy theorists should be already lining up, saying that Stevens and the NASA official were about to go public on some major space-based cover-up and were permanently silenced.

Stevens was one of two survivors in a 1978 plane crash at Anchorage International Airport that killed his wife, Ann, and several others.

That's crazy! The odds of being in two plane crashes in a lifetime must be nuts!

Mohammed Ferrat worked with Ron Brown, and backed out at the last minute on the flight that crashed and killed Brown in April 96. He died on TWA Flight 800 in July 96.

And there is the Alaskan triangle to boot.
ain't that some shit
At least he died in the state he represented and he was really damn old. Too bad about the rest on the plane, not as poetic of deaths probably.

I'm pretty sure the odds of being on a single place crash is pretty nuts.

I would think the odds are a little better for Alaskans, though. The flying conditions, amount of flying done, and types of planes that are common, are stacked against anyone who travels a lot there.

Some odd things have been posted in here I never knew about. To say Stevens was tied to a lot of dirty dealings is putting it lightly. However, I'm never one to wish something so awful on even the worst of people.

How true. I used to really rail against Ted Kennedy, and when he announced he had a brain tumor, I felt like a real jerk.
This guy is going to be pratically canonized on the floor of the Senate in the next few days. I hope that his colleagues can find something good to say, and they do have about 40 years to look for good things. I'm sure he started out well intentioned, but no matter what, he was convicted of seven counts of violating the Ethics in Government Act. AG Holder later dropped the charges and vacated the convictions, but he did lose his Senate seat because of the trial.
But from what I have heard he was a nice person and a good father and grandfather. RIP Senator Stevens. I hope you're in a better place.
Personally, I have few nice things to say about Ted Stevens' political career, however the people of Alaska elected him 5 times to be their Senator. That in itself is no small accomplishment.
RIP Mr. Stevens.

Strom Thurmond, Robert Byrd and Ted Kennedy disagree.

The very things that people hated Byrd for are why WV loved him. Without him, the state would be 100 times more of a shit hole than it is now. That's what gets a man reelected so many times.

That's the nicest way I've seen someone say that Senator Stevens "brought home the bacon", which he definitely did.

Which is exactly why I never understand people who act like the people of some states are stupid for reelecting people like them. If someone is making their lives better, when no one else can, why should they give a fuck about the rest of the states?
