Subway... how personal is too personal?

For some reason I've always been interested in people's (well mostly women) ethnic background.
I take the subway to work in the morning. Yesterday there was a really beautiful woman on the train, with an exotic look. I wanted to ask her what her ethnic background was.
I wasn't looking to pick her up I really just wanted to know what her background was.
Don't get me wrong, if something came out of it, that'd be great, but it wasn't my motivation.

I was wondering if the wonderful ladies of RF.net could answer something for me.
If someone that you didn't know asked you on the subway what your ethnic background was, would you think that was too invasive or would you think the guy was trying to pick you up or just think he was actually interesting in your ethinicity?

It's funny you should ask this, I am constantly being asked. It pisses me off most of the time, other times it creeps me out, depending who is asking. It just seems like, "Hey, don't you think that's a little wierd/personal to ask someone you dont know?". I don't know, maybe I'm just being silly, I dunno. I honestly don't think there's anything "different" about what I look like, I think I am just a normal looking person. Who knows, maybe other females don't really mind.

I would answer it, but I would either think it was a pick up line, or (I dont know why this thought came in my mind) But I might think the person asking might want to kill me. I've seen to many movies I guess
