I agree that this is a local issue, but I'm also convinced that this issue is a symbol of who we are as a people.
If we are truly the nation of laws and freedoms that we claim to be, then we must respect the rights of any legal entity to reside in that building. If the terrorists truly "hate us for our freedoms", then let's be the most modern-thinking, free sombitches on the planet.
Do it.

Come on WF, prove Barnaby wrong about your reading comprehension skills.
"The freedom of religion is a Constitutional right. Where a place of worship is located is a local decision.
"I support the statement made by the Interfaith Alliance that 'We agree with the ADL that there is a need for transparency about who is funding the effort to build this Islamic center. At the same time, we should also ask who is funding the attacks against the construction of the center.'
"For all of those expressing concern about the 9/11 families, we call upon them to join us in support of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act when Congress returns in September."

She makes a great point actually. All the republicans fighting to not allow this mosque because it "disrespects" those that died or saved lives on 9/11 but for some reason none of them seem to have a problem with their party voting down a bill to give guaranteed healthcare to 9/11 responders. Settle down. Charity funding requires a certain level of transparency. If a fireman's widow (again you get so emotional) donates $1K, no one is kicking down her door. If she donates $1M, a red flag may go up and the IRS or another governmental agency may want to follow the money.
Pelosi's position, if I may, is that opposition to the Mosque is being used as a political tool by the right. It is not some grassroots movement as the right would like to portray. Much like Glenn Beck's analysis of how ACORN and other groups are funded, she would like to see how these groups are funded.
No one is investigating individual citizens. Keep up with visceral reactions, they are always useful in making important decisions.

Exactly. That's what makes churches so good.

I disagree. If it is being taxed, it should have a right to say how much is being taxed and where the taxes should go.
And serve jail time as well. Oops, they can't.
Corporations are not men, not people. I think they expansion of corporate rights is the single largest problem in the world today.

Agreed. However, as corporate power grows, union power must grow in proportion. The need for unions would drop if the power given to corporations was also reigned in.
Corporations in their current form are amoral. People may have natural rights, corporations do not.

Whatever legitimate function unions may or may not serve is a different question. What I'm talking about is political speech in the form of dollars and cents, and unions wield as much influence as anyone (http://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/list.php?type=L). So any obstacles you hope to throw in front of corporate speech will trip up labor as well.
I would argue that throwing up those obstacles is only going to impact the little guy who wants his speech to find an audience, as the Viacoms and NRAs and UAWs have the deep pockets to hire lawyers to fill out the requisite paper work and fight the legal battles...and still have cash left over to buy enough TV time to get their message out PLUS all twenty disclosure statements they'll need.
This should all be a moot point, though, because the Constitution instructs, "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech." Pretty unambiguous, but that doesn't count for much with this government.

Corporations have no right to exist, let alone freedom of speech.
If the government wanted to, they could end the corporate organization tomorrow. Skipping right over the free speech for corporations issue.
