Have you ever gone to a concert and had them NOT do the encore? I always stand around while everyone cheers saying "LIKE THEY'RE NOT GOING TO PLAY IT"... but last night I saw the Lemonheads, the MC guy was riling up the crowd making everyone cheer louder and louder, then said "Evan's done" and shut down for the night. I've been to shitloads of concerts and I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've ever seen it happen.

ive had this happen a few times though i cant remember who the bands were at this moment (the 2000's were a concert blur for me since i went to so many). the first time it happened however, i was a little surpirsed by it. maybe the singer or the band was just tired. by the time they get to NYC, the group has usually been on the road for a while :o

If the concert had just ended, it would be one thing... but the mc person made a big show out of making everyone cheer louder and louder and then nothing. Maybe we really didn't cheer loud enough.

Never had that happen. I also think it's silly to cheer for the encore since everyone knows it's coming. It's really sad tho' when for one reason or another the crowd is lackluster about their applauding, then the band has to come out and act like the crowd is going nuts.

I kept reading this as McPerson and wondered what a McPerson was.
I'll have a McPerson with lots of shake and booty fries. Thanks!

it's happened a few times: there's a great band, the wedding present; that never plays an encore; i saw elvis costello rip through 30 songs and not come back out & there's a slight cheat of seeing a band that's the opener or middle act and they usually never play an encore
i could take it or leave it

I think the encore should be more like the EP. Play something you normally wouldn't play. I think its retarded when you hear about a huge band's encore being some of their biggest hits.
Screeching Weasel didn't play an encore when they were in Philly, they announced there would be no encore, and it was so weird when it ended that noone left. It didn't help that everyone was chanting for the band and they came out to film it, which everyone took as a cue that they had figured out an encore they could play.
I have seen a middle act play an encore because the crowd wouldn't be denied. Ernie, the singer for Grey Area, told the crowd they couldn't play anything else because the band didn't know all of the songs he had written, just the set list, and anyway they were out of time. The drummer for Kid Dynamite was there watching the show and they pulled him on stage, The Bouncing Souls agreed to give up some time, and they played a really amazing version of NYHC classic "Birthdays" which Ernie wrote with his first band, and Kid Dynamite covered with Ernie doing guest vocals. That was one of the best things I ever saw.

Yah, had it happen a few times, but the lights came up and it should have let everyone know it just wasn't going to happen. Still people tried and failed.
I also had a few show were the band basically said they'll be right back after a few minute break, just chill, we're not done. I liked that. Took out the bs pomp and circumstance of the encore that is beyond cliche at this point.
The band Cake actually has a bunch of buddies that open and play intermission music while they break as well. They play a long show and take a few breaks and this time is filled by a couple buddies that come out and play some acoustic sets which usually aren't that bad. A nice mix. Sometimes however it's filled with some jam band shit that I absolutely hate and almost fall asleep to while waiting for them to get back on stage. Still, a very different approach.

that's ideal ... end the main set with a classic / then a great encore usually has a cover, a hidden gem and a couple of signature songs

The band leader probably had to fart and needed the cheering as a cover, but when he farted, shit happened and he had to bail

I actually went to a couple of shows last year where the band didn't do encores. One of the bands was the Black Lips, and I can't think of the other one. In both cases, the lights came on so quickly after the band left the stage, that it clearly wasn't an issue of the crowd not cheering enough. Maybe encores are becoming passe?

They had one hell of an encore at the Swell Season concert last night in California.

Swell Season as in Damien Rice's buddies and the band with the movie? If so, very nice.

Wow, pretty intense. Although some of their music is quite depressing at times (purposely). Maybe he was just so drugged up he was tripping or something. Just an odd thing to read at a Swell Season concert.

I saw Alkaline Trio at Starland Ballroom a year or two ago and they didn't have an encore. It was a weird show to begin with. It was shortly after they re-released their first album Godammit and they played it in it's entirety. Then Matt Skiba played some stuff acousticaly and then he left the stage and Dan Andriano came out and played some stuff acousticaly as well. I think they came back out and played one or two more songs and then left.
During Matt's solo part, though, he said that there would be no encore. Maybe they were burnt out. If I remember correctly that tour was pretty intense.

Sugar at City Gardens. Like, '94 or '95, maybe..
Came on. Played. Didn't say a fucking word to the audience. Left.
Don't get me wrong, the songs were great, but I could have listened to that at home. Considering it was City Gardens, they could've gotten a shitty deal from the promoter or owner or got screwed somehow and at times that affects the artists performance. But trash the backstage and steal beer if you're pissed at the venue, leave me the fuck out of it, I paid good money for the show, give me one.

i saw Midnight Oil at Radio City, and after the main set, half of the people started leaving. before they came out for the encore, the ushers shut the doors and the idiots that left weren't allowed back in for the encore. why would you leave before the house-lights come on?!?!?
p.s. that was the loudest show i ever saw. i was honestly concerned that the level of the bass was gonna disrupt my heartbeat or rupture my internal organs!

Actually, they did the same thing. Every picture I took of Evan Dando is of him standing in the exact same position, and not one word was said to the crowd. Maybe he was pissed that he now has to play bars the size of Bar 9. I was too enthralled to be a foot away and hearing every song I had on blast during high school played for me to care.
Also, we saw him outside the bar and tried to talk to him, and he ran away from us.

Maybe he had just seen "Once" and couldn't live with the shittiness!
