I've never been on unemployment so I'm hoping one of you slackers will be able to answer my question.
A friend of mine works for an on-line news site (local site called Patch). Anyway, he asked me to write a news article for him and I got paid a WHOPPING $40 (I made $12 after I spent $20 on gas and $8 to go through the Holland Tunnel).
So when I call in for my benefits they ask if I worked since my last check. I did and I will not lie. I made $40. How will unemployment treat that? It was a one-time payment for an assignment; I wasn't paid hourly. Will they just deduct $40 from my benefits or will they do some sort of weird voodoo math and not pay me for a day?
A friend worked a part-time job (3 hours) and they docked her a whole day (she gets NY benefits, though. I'm in NJ.)
BTW:
Here's the story I wrote:

(Why did I drive out to Massapequa, LI from Jersey City for a lousy $40? I'm my husband's immigration sponsor. I had show them proof that I have a job as an independent contractor. Oh, and there's a local Hoboken Patch I'm hoping to hook up with.)
