I've never been on unemployment so I'm hoping one of you slackers will be able to answer my question.

A friend of mine works for an on-line news site (local site called Patch). Anyway, he asked me to write a news article for him and I got paid a WHOPPING $40 (I made $12 after I spent $20 on gas and $8 to go through the Holland Tunnel).

So when I call in for my benefits they ask if I worked since my last check. I did and I will not lie. I made $40. How will unemployment treat that? It was a one-time payment for an assignment; I wasn't paid hourly. Will they just deduct $40 from my benefits or will they do some sort of weird voodoo math and not pay me for a day?

A friend worked a part-time job (3 hours) and they docked her a whole day (she gets NY benefits, though. I'm in NJ.)

BTW:
Here's the story I wrote:

http://massapequa.patch.com/articles/mad-about-madden

(Why did I drive out to Massapequa, LI from Jersey City for a lousy $40? I'm my husband's immigration sponsor. I had show them proof that I have a job as an independent contractor. Oh, and there's a local Hoboken Patch I'm hoping to hook up with.)

NJ is so much better than NY. You'll get deducted $40.

I am technically a Per Diem EMT at my job so I'm still reporting to unemployment in hopes that if I have slow weeks I'll get partial benefits. They ask you for your total amount of money earned before any deductions and the hours you worked for that money. I did it online for the 1st time last week. I made too much money to get any partial benefits but your $40 shouldn't set you back too much. Just make sure to put it all on there so there's not chance they can screw you and you should be fine.

They WILL deduct the 40.00 from your regular unemployment check. For only 40.00 I would have said nothing. They'd never find out.

i would agree with this, they wont find out and if they did it is easy to pay back. but she needs to say it cause she needs a paper trail to show INS

Next time you do that DON'T SAY ANYTHING and enjoy the extra $40. My wife is on Unemployment and if she did that I would kill her. Fuck it..I find it amazing, you pay into unemployment and when you get it, they tax you.....Amazing.

Good that your honest but stop IT.

Another unemployment question: I got a part-time job ($9/hr) I'll probably work less than 20 hours per week. How will this effect my unemployment checks (NJ)? Will they just take what I made out of my unemployment? My friend collects NY unemployment. If she works 4 hours they dock her a whole day.
