"The soaring, unusually shaped buildings are clad in glass and metal, and the interiors are just as slick. The facility boasts a state-of-the-art swimming pool, fine art murals, an ornate auditorium suitable for hosting the Oscars, and a faculty dining room that the superintendent says is "better than most restaurants."

No wonder the Chinese and Indians are kicking our asses. Hundreds of millions of dollars wasted on unnecessary garbage meanwhile children can't solve simple algebra equations and theres a 35% dropout rate. Children will be going to the Public School version of the Ritz Carlton
i'd say the Prussian model has more to do with the with the educational woes of the country. This school is simply a testament to what is wrong with white America.
I hope an earthquake levels it.

Nice that they buried this on the second page
But Los Angeles school district officials say it's not an "either-or" proposition. The money for school construction comes from voter-approved bonds, an account that is totally separate from what is budgeted for textbooks and teachers.
"The money can only be spent for that building," LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines said. "That's what the voters said."
It's from voter approved funds. Clearly, it's just an article designed to create anger from people who don't read past the headlines.

My big issue is, do you think it's wise to have high school kids around children? K-12? Really?

Was that school really needed?
"Critics say the school is a luxury that the Los Angeles Unified School District cannot afford. The district has a $640 million budget shortfall, and over the past two years, 3,000 teachers have been laid off. The district has even proposed shortening the school year by six days to save money.
The money troubles come on top of the district's serious academic shortfalls. With a dropout rate upwards of 35 percent, LA Unified is one of the lowest-performing school districts in America."
250K per student better produce a hell of a lot of Rhodes Scholars

Yea, critics who have come out against the school AFTER it was built.
To be fair to the voters, it was approved before the economy went downhill.
Nonetheless, I saw video of it and it will probably close down due to the cost of just the upkeep. It's too nice of a place to be filled with kids!
But the "critics" should shut up, it's too late now and they had plently of time to stop it from being built.

*shrugs* The voters approved the funds for it.
And hey, i'd rather have 578 million spent on a school rather than building a rich owner another stadium with public money.

Maybe I misread the article. It says that as California tax spending on education has decreased, so has its educational status.
Is that your point? They need to increase spending to increase their competitiveness?

Or better allocate funds.
The point is, yes the voters voted for this, but in some cases there shouldn't be universal suffrage and this is one of them.
This is basically a place where kids can go to school and cut class at the same time

The real tale that this story tells is not about education, but about business. California has a freshman graduation rate of around 71% (national average is around 75%), so they're below average, but no where near last (Nevada 51%).
The statistic is "adult population has at least a high school education." And since their graduation rate doesn't reflect that, you can't blame it on the educational system. It means they're leaving the state for some other reason, most likely because California is a shitty place to do business (http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/9/06beststates_The-Best-States-For-Business_Rank_2.html), and there are no jobs (http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/state_unemployment/).

You can spend all the money you want it still wont change that some never care enough or have parents who care enough. This is the biggest waste of money and the school will become a shit hole just like many others in that area. When you dont pay for something yourself sometimes you dont respect it or care for it as well as you should. Thats the problem most of the people in that school district do not pay taxes or the kind of taxes that deserve something like that.
I hope an earthquake levels it.
That is awesome.

CA public education has been destroyed by prop 13 (which was an off-shoot of the Regan revolution in CA.) The inability to get property taxes is destroying California.

If a local referendum legalized slavery, you think the rest of the country couldn't do something about it. Your flaw is in comparing apples and oranges- a local government spending what some people feel is too much money on a school is not the same legal issue as a local government having a law that potentially denies some people their constitutional rights.

CT doesnt issue its own currency. CT as well as other states sends billions to the treasury every year.
We are talking about local issues. Let the property owners in each state fund their own schools. If CA goes bankrupt let them deal with it.

Raise your property taxes. (http://www.ctpost.com/schools/article/Federal-money-could-radically-change-Bridgeport-484652.php)
I don't think you understand the concept of union. California has problems, but you have to realize that being such a large state, its problems will be larger than your cute little CT.
While I think federal tax rates should be lowered, so states don't need to beg the federal government for money for roads, schools, police, etc. But, while we all agree to be part of this union, the federal government needs control. It has side stepped the constitution by using its money to do things it couldn't legislate. I am just not sure if that was the wrong decision. Maybe they would have had to constitutionally expand their powers. But, then states would have no choice, now they can turn down the federal money, even if that isn't a realistic option.

Don't you mean No. Cal!? And yah, LA sucks in every way possible. I drove the coast twice and Northern Cal was fucking awesome with great people from north of wine country down to Cambria. Once you break the Northern limits of the LA vicinity it's like people instantly turn into fake assholes who will run you off the road and the area gets extremely crowded and dirty. It doesn't get much better until you get to San Diego. SD is more laid back, somewhat more NCal, and much more clean/beautiful. The people overall are pretty laid back from what I gathered in my week there, but not NCal laid back.
In short, Fuck LA.
