Mehlman was one of the closeted anti-gay political figures covered in the documentary Outrage. The others included:
Larry Craig, former U.S. Senator of Idaho
Ed Schrock, former U.S. Congressman of Virginia
Charlie Crist, Governor of Florida
Ed Koch, former New York City mayor
Jim McCrery, former U.S. Congressman of Louisiana
David Dreier, U.S. Congressman of California
along with Shep Smith from Fox News.
They also covered the media's censorship when it comes to outings, like CNN editing out the segment when Bill Maher said that Mehlman was gay on Larry King Live a few years ago.

Well, as Newt Gingrich, the granddaddy of getting hayseeds pissed off on "moral issues" to get them to vote for economic policies out to reduce them to peasantry (and who definitely isn't gay -- he's such a pussy hound that Bill Clinton might tell him to cool it) says: “It doesn’t matter what I do. People need to hear what I have to say. There’s no one else who can say what I can say. It doesn’t matter what I live.”
Any politician, of any party, or any ideological bent, who makes a point of spouting off about "morality" is a bullshit artist who should not get your vote.

The difference is the libs don't campaign on anti-straight policies. Although hayseeds and idiots would like to think gay marriage is.

Not even the same thing. In the case of the morality of the death penalty or nuclear weapons, we are talking about two actual exercises of government power. We are, in either case, giving the government the direct ability to take life. So that's a legitimate discussion we should have. Is this a right the government should have?
On the other hand, politicians shouldn't have shit to say about whether or not anyone should suck cock. That's not a political issue.

There isn't a political idea outside of the most basic conceptions of the social contract that can't be conceived as a moral issue. War, health care, drugs, guns...these all have immense moral components.

Not a day goes by that I don't regret the version of Sarah Palin I thought was true in the Summer of 2008. I'm gonna go on record as saying "I did the best I could with the information available at the time". :flush:

I'm just trying to say that many decisions made by lawmakers are on the basis of morality (even in the case of lobbying, those special interests spring up based on a belief grounded in morality), and I oppose each of the aforementioned issues based on the inherent immorality of their use. So I disagree that it's illegitimate to reference morality in speaking on behalf of an issue, even though I'm pro gay marriage.

To me, the Ken Mehlman story is one of the most shameful stories in modern politics.
Leading into 2004, the Republican National Committee used a strategy to place "Gay Marriage Referendums" on as many statewide ballots as possible during the November 2004 elections. So states with republican state houses placed them on the ballot.
This strategy was clearly put into place to maximize the voting turnout of the religious right in those states. The strategy clearly worked and of the 11 states that had a referndum, 100% of those referendums passed. That meant that the christian conservative vote was maximized that November.
Clearly the RNC scared the threat of gay marriage to turn out their vote in 2004. And of those states in 2004, none was more obvious than Ohio. Remember Ohio? The swing state that decided the election for George W. Bush?
And who approved that plan to scare the rubes with gay marriage? Ken Mehlman. That's right....gay Ken Mehlman sold out his own cause for electoral gain.

What about Dick Cheney? Because the anti-gay policies affected his daughter he didn't agree with them.
That is part of the hypocrisy of the right- they have no problem condemning others, until it actually affects their family.
Dick and Ken supporting gays.
Jeb Bush supporting hispanic americans.
Nancy Regan supporting stem cells.

I don't think it's fair to try to project how you think they would've aligned themselves if they weren't in that situation. One can be against abortion and pro-stem cell research; in fact it's not uncommon for one to be against one and for the other. Also, Jeb deserves credit for being fairly pro-immigration across the board. One could argue that it was political opportunism (though no more than democratic political opportunism), but he made strong efforts to accomadate Haitians in Florida as well as Cubans.

Democracy, like every other system, is a very flawed system.
Until one finds a better one, we all have to live with it.
People say its the two party thing..
Eh..
Europe has multiple parties and thats shit too..
Forming coalitions, the threat of it constintly collapsing, forcing snap elections..
No one good system out there..
Maybe we do need alien overloards..
Maybe we do need alien overloards..
And I, for one, welcome them.
