View Full Version : Hypnosis Show Suggestions
Ron mentioned that a Hypnosis Show might occur soon. These shows have been marvelously great in the past.
If you could suggest a topic or idea for when the Hypnosis Show is being done, what would it be?
Besides Fez and Chris, who else do you know might be part of the hypnosis show?
Is Crazed supposed to be a part of it this time?

Ron said Patrice might be coming in soon, so I vote this be his debut. I bet he could go under seeing how easy he falls asleep on O&A sometimes.
Have Fez not cry for the entire show.

I am super excited for this fucking show. The hypnotism shows are always my favorite. I can't wait to see what they do. However let's keep Don from suggesting bits. He always likes to fall back on the cliche stage gags these hypnotists love to use. No offense Don, I just remember cringing a bit during previous shows.

No offense but you have to remember how hard it is to do a hypnosis show on radio...most of the time it very visual.

Oh, im very certain of that. I have been to some live hypnosis shows, and many of the gags are very visual.
Me personally, I'm fond of when Fezzy has to impersonate people. His Ric Flair and Midnight Rider impressions were out of fucking control.
I'm not trying to be negative to you Don. I love the hypnosis shows, and I'm happy you'll be there.
My suggestion. Teleport Fezzie back 8 years in time in his mind.

I like the skeptical attitude, but you really need to do some reading. Clinical hypnosis has a long history and there's plenty of information available from scholarly resources.
This sort of thing, however, ain't clinical hypnosis. I'll repost what I said in another thread:
Why is hypnotism so hard for some people to understand? It's not fake; but it's not forcing people to do something against their will.
Why? Because the public knowledge of hypnosis is based almost entirely on either cheesy stage shows and snakeoil hypnotherapy tapes. Neither necessarily has anything to do with genuine clinical hypnosis.
What they do is stage hypnosis, and whether or not Don applies real technique is pretty much a moot point, since all of the results achieved can be explained by simple suggestion. The only thing that matters is that Fez believes, all the other pieces fall into place after that.
There's certainly a delineation problem -- where does suggestion end and hypnosis begin? Short of hooking someone up to an fMRI, I don't know how you'd get an answer.

Yeah, I dont want to spend time reading up on it - just seems like people go along with the gag. Kinda like the Oiuja board - you know somebody is moving that sucker.
I would like to try hypnosis and see if I could be put under. This is the only way I would agree that it really works.

Fez and others swear by it, but Penn Gillette called it complete bullshit on their show (not that he's the final word). And no ones cares about clinical usage, we're obviously only concerned with stage usage.

That's the thing. There is no such thing as "under." There's no line you cross from being conscious to being hypnotized. It's all degrees of susceptibility to suggestion.
Like right now, with no hint of "hypnotic induction" whatsoever, some asshole could get you to scratch your back just by using body language. Your back isn't actually itchy, but you see him squirming and scratching and that suggestion takes over.
Or say you sign up for a drug trial. A doctor comes in and tells you all the the effects you should expect from taking this pill, meanwhile he gives you a placebo, yet you still notice some positive effects. The pill didn't actually do anything, but because you trusted the authority of the doctor, his suggestion had a lot of power.
Then when you throw in the dynamics of crowd psychology, the authority of a "Master Hypnotist," and maybe a little booze, soon enough you're acting like your dick is missing. The whole concept of "under" is just the reaction to the suggestion that you should be "under."
Do you actually believe it's happening? Some people do, but others can be knowingly playing along. Does this mean hypnotism is real? The effects can be real, but I don't think it's anything close to how people perceive (have been led to believe) the process works.

I cracked up when they were being Chinese rappers and they started doing the dozens, and one guy said "Yo mama is so fat, she got more chins than one of our phonebooks," which was quickly followed by Fez yelling "Somebody bring me back the yen please!"
Even though I was distracted by the fact that yen is Japanese, that part had me rolling. But it was pretty much the only laugh of the entire segment.

Why was that trainwreck? You have to remember that even tho people get hypnotized it doesn't make them funny. I thought the Porno bit, The Mafia Life and the Preacher was funny. Again its extremely hard to do this on radio when 90% of stage hypnosis is visual. If you don't like it, don't f$#$ing listen to the show.

I just listened to the hypnosis show. Just some random thoughts here.
Fezzie of course shone, but I'll admit that some of other characters just didn't have the kind of high energy personality needed.
The strongest performers were easily Fez, Nico, and Rustin.
Everything just seemed more subdued in general up until the preacher bit. Seemed like a lot of people grasping for what to do.
The robot bit was bizarre. I laughed quite a bit at some of Fez's robot jokes.
Rustin as the preacher was amazing. I really loved it. That is seriously one of the best things I have ever heard on the show. I could have listened to four hours of that.
I really wish they would have had Fez warp back to 10 years ago Fez. I wonder how that would have worked. Fez as Ron was funny. However I would have made him as Ron actually doing the show. The inner monologue thing was funny, but I wanted to see Fezzy actually do a Ron on the radio impression and see if he changed his timing to be more like Ron's.
The high bit is a staple, but I have to admit it didn't work too well this time around. The Usual Suspects was a complete dud. The Chinese yodelers was dead until as someone else mentioned the "chins in our phonebook" followed by the bring me back some yen please.
Overall I will say it wasn't the strongest hypnosis show they have done, but there was a lot there that I really loved. I will continue to look forward to these shows in the future. Thanks Don.

Now that was a pretty honest. Here is the problem that many of you are probably unaware of. I get asked to come do a show and until 5 minutes before we go on the air I have no clue what they want to do. I have a million skits in my head, but many of them would be more visual which would not translate to radio very well. So its not like we sit down and talk about what bits we should do.
Obviously we can only do chinese singing, and getting high or drunk so many times.
In my honest opinion, if it was just Fez hypnotized and maybe 1 or 2 interns it would be great. It all should evolve around Fez because when he is hypnotized his personality and creativity shines.
Oh and maybe you didn't hear it but I thought the Mafia Life was pretty good as well. So would I give it an "A" like many of the past shows? No probably not, but your not always going to hit it out of the ballpark.
