View Full Version : Your Thoughts about Intern Rustin

I have to say I think the guy is actually pretty damn good on the air. I know he said there was some shit talk about him on here, but I didn't see a thread so I figured I would start one. Maybe the posts were in the listening thread?
Either way, I enjoy when Ron brings him on because he's able to laugh at himself, and he actually does get in some good shots as well. More Texas intern!

Big thumbs up.
If you're ever listening to him and thinking that he's being cocky consider that he's playing it up for radio, and everyone loved certain other people for doing the same thing.
I like the new Texas quite a bit. He doesn't step on Whatley and he brings interesting material to the air.
What's not to like?

He was good on the air. He expressed opinions, but wasn't forceful. He was knowledgeable about a enough topics to carry a conversation. For a new intern he gave an A+ performance. Let's hope he continues to contribute.

Glad to hear I'm not alone in the sentiment. He brought a lot of energy to the show. I love that you can tell he really is a fan of the show, and how excited he is to be there and working for them. His enthusiasm is really fun to hear.

Worst intern ever. Rustin, if you're reading this, do the right thing and just kill yourself, because you've clearly shown in your limited exposure that you don't have what it takes to make it in the game of life. This show used to be so much better when they had interns who weren't from the deep south. Rustin? More like Rusty Trombone. This honky being on the air in any capacity is going to be an instant channel changer for me.
*trying to live up to the perception he has of this board's alleged hateful nature*
Rustin for Dave's abandoned position!:)

I think that's Fez's* perception of the board, not necessarily Rustin's.

Nah, I saw a picture of him without a hat on and you can definitely tell that he used to have horns.
He must have had that horn removal surgery that is all the rage these days.
Intern Rustin, an intern for Ron & Fez, was very cordial and gave Ron & Fez someone to discuss the issues brought up on their show besides Chris.
As Ron put it, A kid in a candy store, I hope that he keeps his positive attitude when radio as a whole isn't a healthy environment.

ron hates all red state hicks who watch nascar.
So using this intern to intercede and he does not have to talk to them is what ron wants instead of just staring at fez for something that is no longer there.

Using interns is fine, everyone can be interesting for a short time. But, the show does need more staff. A four show, plus weekends, and you have one guy. O&A, and I am sure Stern, have a team of people that get them material, do bits, organize show prep, edit best ofs, etc. Pepper needs help.
Good news, Sirius will go under, and Stern, O&A, R&F will be on FM or podcasting.

Most of the interns suck. Rustin was good at first but became extremely grating on Wednesday when he basially took over the show and started interviewing--for lack of a better term--another grating guy, G Baby.
"Did you see Catfish?"
"Yeah."
"Did you like it?"
"Um, Yeah."
Compelling shit there.
And his sucking up to Ron makes Dave look like an independent thinker. He seems like he'd be good in small doses (lazlo and Rustin's interaction was great) and he's way better than any other intern they've had, but letting him run the show is awful.

Well I agree. But listening to him and G Baby talk vaguely about film was awful. Listening to Ron and g baby talk film is barely tolerable.
As a gut they go to time to time, he's entertaining, but a week in he's already seeming to try to take over the show a la Dave...but without insulting Fez.

He seems to know quite a bit about a variety of subjects. What he doesn't know, he is very interested in learning about. After the Sedaka interview he set up Ron perfectly with his questions, and a genuine desire to understand the era. He also brought up the Nashville scene, which I agree is the only place that the old song writing system exists these days.
As an audible listener I'm 2-3 days behind everybody, so he may piss me off soon. <winky eye>

You should be the one bashing Fez. If he could actually carry on a conversation with his co host Ron wouldnt feel the need to reach out to an intern to help him do his radio show. Its his fault, so since you dont like it you should be the one bitching about him.

Are you new to the show? The bit USED to be, "oh that's the show with the gay one, right?" and Fez would always say in a loud gay voice "why does everyone always think I'm gay?" or something to that effect.
You know, when Fez would play the stereotypical and hilarious gay guy, who's doing a very bad job of being closeted.

A few points to hit here, the first being why is it they must hate on Fez and be like "we'll dude Fez doesnt do nothing so thank god for Rustin!" Or just in general - where people will bring Fez up and say he doesnt participate (rant, rant rant).
He's going through some shit for a while now, so get off his back. Further, he does do Producer-related stuff, live reads, and brings awesome creative stuff and/or his general opinion on things.
On to the second, Rustin is OK, but does seem to hijack the show alot. I did like how he worked with Fez on the hypno show, so he seems to be alrighty..

He's coming into his own pretty quickly, and obviously Ron's taken to him. After Fez said his inner voice told him to get out of the apartment more, eat healthy, etc., Rustin said that the inner voice was like a "funny version of the callers." A few minutes later Ron laughed and said "I'm still thinking about what you said about Fez's inner voice."
He's very strong/comfortable for a 19 year old with nothing more than 4 weeks of an unpaid internship and half semester at broadcasting school on his resume.
It's got to suck being either of the other interns, Not Rustin and Still Not Rustin.

Just now listening to Friday's show. "the inner voice is a funnier version of the callers", "Austin is great", "did I mention the Alamo Draft House yet?"
The kid is great. I am sure it helps to have Ron there, but I don't think anyone has ever been so comfortable on-air with so little experience. He just has a funny conversation with Ron.

thats like the worst thing you can call a man
Ron was way to harsh on Intern Rustin with his complaints that he didn't use ProTools enough and Intern Rustin saying he was replacing ESD which he was with no fault to himself.
Intern Rustin was put in a really bad internship with only Pepper Hicks to teach him. Hicks was inundated with duties previously given to Pitzy, ESD and Black Earl plus the new week-end recap show.
Sure Intern Rustin could have done better but so could have "others" and it came off Ron was channeling his thoughts and insecurities about someone(s) else to Intern Rustin and ignoring the real major, significant and material problems with the show. The last time Ron went after an intern, they basically quit the business. Hopefully Intern Rustin will recover.
fyi, there will be a poll .

What did Pepper have when he interned? Black Earl and Dave? The Kid just doesn't have it.

I can pretty much guess what happened. He was a typical 19 year old kid who assumed everything was gonna fall in his lap and he'd be "one of the guys". When it didn't happen right away he sulked and stopped trying hard.
Today was a life lesson that most people have to learn, it just doesn't usually happen on the air to most of us.

Loved the Rustin storyline. It reminded me of WJFK Ron and Fez... the way they made Rustin go from hero to heel was fun.
Maybe the only issue was that it was a little bit like the Wonderboy storyline.

I get the feeling that the Kid doesn't know what a heel-turn is...

I thought he was a great kid and should look back at on the show time as a great time in his life.
I only wish he didn't burn out it was great when Ron used him on the air in the early days of his internship, not so much in the end.:bye:
I respect The Kid for leaving home and taking a chance with this internship. He made the most of it. I liked him on the show.

Was everything a setup for the turn? I never understood his popularity.

This entire Rustin thing is -to me- obviously a "bit".
The kid had it. He was energetic and not at all shy. Additionally... he was pretty well rounded , considering that he was only 19.
Ron praised and pushed the kid, in an effort to make Fez realize how easy & effortless it SHOULD be to talk into a wide open microphone. Ron was CLEARLY trying to motivate Fez... or more to the point... shame Fez into being a better co-host.
It didn't work. Fez never came out of his shell... oh well... time to "turn" on Rustin.

It's where real men go to post; kind of like a mancave message board. No gurlz aloud.

Finally listened to his last couple shows. I kept wishing he would at least try to stand up for himself to Ron. What did he have to lose? I liked him at first but now I just think he's a little bitch. Ron would've respected him more if he fought back. He was actually in tears at one point.
