i don't know from personal experience, but i'd put money on it being nauseatingly hipster-esque

Last time I was there I was in a predominantly Indian section. This guys apartment was there and we were shooting a student film. It was alright. Not really the "real" Brooklyn I guess.

All of the above. Depends on where you are.

In Park Slope a brownstone is very expensive, in Bedford–Stuyvesant while not cheap by many standards it is affordable by New York standards , not sure what you mean by Gross, do you mean dirty? Parts of Bushwick are dirty, part of Brooklyn Heights aren't Dangerous? Some sections of the border with Queens are more dangerous than the Afgan / Pakistan Border, other sections are as safe as any in the city. Nauseatingly hipster-esqe you will find in some parts of Williamsburg but if that’s not your scene it can easily be avoided.

If Brooklyn was a standalone city only LA and Chicago would have a higher population. Brooklyn has lots of great neighborhoods and some not so great neighborhoods.

I lived in Carol Gardens which I really liked, it had a lot of shops, good restaurants, pizza joints, bars/ lounges etc. I lived there in my mid twenties and for me it was perfect. My wife lived in Green point which was really cool. Lots of great eats and relatively safe.

I'm applying to Pratt and Simmons for graduate school. So i will end up living in upper NJ/NY border or in NY close to school or the Boston area.

One bedroom or a studio, 2 bdrm if my boyfriend doesn't move with me and i find a roommate.

none of those places sound close. how could you live in the nj/ny border or boston? there about 3-4 hours away from each other.

Never lived there, but many friends do and I always have a great time hanging out there. Hipsters are easy to ignore.

It depends on the neighborhood. Brooklyn is a large diverse borough, larger than most cities. The places that are one or two train stops from Manhattan are either hipster and expensive or professionals and more expensive.
Almost all of Brooklyn is relatively safe. You may not want to be a lone girl on a train at 2am in some areas, but with decent judgment it is fine.
Gross? It can be. Too many people- garbage, cars, construction, etc.
If you have money, and can afford Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, it can amazing; great food, bars, boutiques, and entertainment on every block; museums, and parks close by.

I lived in Brooklyn for seven years. Its an amazing place, its so big that you'll never see all of it. Not many neighborhoods left that are dangerous but they are there. Gross depends on the situation I guess. Hipsters are just there to be ignored.

I would guess Brooklyn is like almost any other area of the country. There's nice areas and there's areas you want to steer clear of. If you're a little street smart you'll be fine.

I lived in Boerum Hill and wasn't a big fan. I mean, it seemed that everyone EXCEPT my block loved it. Then again, my block was filled with two halfway houses and a church where a 16 yr old girl was shoved in a garbage can.
I have been to nice areas of brooklyn..... I could see living there again. But this time not in a fourth floor walk up with a baby.

Dude!

But it was enough to get the troll out from under the bridge, wasn't it?

See, I would have used some awful liquor or deer blood. This is why I admire you.
