HUZZAH!

HUZZAH!

HUZZAH!

Well I swan to mercy, a huckle-berry ! Now ain't that the beatingest language you ever did hear? I can't wait for the roaring 20's!!! Huzzah!

The First World War will officially end on Sunday, 92 years after the guns fell silent, when Germany pays off the last chunk of reparations imposed on it by the Allies. (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/germany/8029948/First-World-War-officially-ends.html)

The final payment of £59.5 million, writes off the crippling debt that was the price for one world war and laid the foundations for another.

Germany was forced to pay the reparations at the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 as compensation to the war-ravaged nations of Belgium and France and to pay the Allies some of the costs of waging what was then the bloodiest conflict in history, leaving nearly ten million soldiers dead.

The initial sum agreed upon for war damages in 1919 was 226 billion Reichsmarks, a sum later reduced to 132 billion, £22 billion at the time.

The bill would have been settled much earlier had Adolf Hitler not reneged on reparations during his reign

Finally, something we can blame Hitler on!

Finally, we can reap the full benefits of the money earned by people whose ancestors fought a war with our ancestors almost a century ago !!!!!!!

Another thing to consider is that the Second World War never officially ended. There was no peace treaty, and the active "war" really only ended when the Soviet Union fell. The Korean War has also been going on for close to 60 years now.

They say that 65,000,000 combatants in total served in WWI! This guy was the last! unbelievable.
They called him "Chuckles". He joined up at 14, served 41 years over two world wars, and became a pacifist. Married almost 80 years. Lived to 110! I hope he had a good and happy life. RIP.

I don't understand. When Frank Buckles died, they said the two that were left were in basic training when the war ended. I'm going to stop believing these reports. It's like we have the last one die at least twice a year.

Was Frankie B perhaps the last surviving American?

No. They said he was the last survivor to serve during the actual war. He was an ambulance driver.

More likely, the newspaper reporter that wrote the article fucked up the details, as modern reporters are so good at doing.

even more odd, first buckles is the last, now it's chuckles? they're not even trying to make up believable names anymore.

Frank Buckles was the last American combatant of the war. Claude Choules was the last combat veteran (fought in the Navy, helped scuttle the German fleet at Scapa Flow).

Florence Green is still alive (110), and she was in the Women's RAF, which still counts as a veteran, just not a combat veteran. She's considered by the Government to be the exact "last" living veteran of the conflict.

There's also a guy in Poland, Jozef Kowalski, who is a veteran of that era, having fought in the Polish/Soviet war in the early 20s.

Related to the subject, this article from TheAwl (http://www.theawl.com/2011/05/the-last-two-veterans-of-wwi)a few days ago on Claude Choules and Florence Green is a great read.
