Just another day in South American politics.

Why couldn't this have happened in Venezuela instead?

Actually, Chavez was briefly ousted in a 2002 coup attempt but was brought back by supporters. It also helped that the Venezuelan military completely supported him.
I don't think Chavez is going anywhere.

Chavez is such an awful man. I know a girl from Venezuela who is an actress/singer and is part of the wealthy in the country. She hates the man.

I think Hugo has done a back of the envelope calculation that he can keep buying friends with the oil money for awhile yet. Once he pisses through it all he's done.

My husband called his mom today. The capital of Ecuador, Quito, is pretty spread out. She's safe. The supermarkets were closed so she had to shop at the corner "bodega." She's more pissed off at the price gouging than the actual coup attempt.

Of course she hates Chavez. He supports the poor, the working class, and the indigenous people. He's got the support of "the common folk." The rich don't need his help; the poor and working class do.
I know I'm biased since my husband is from South America, but why all the Chavez hate? He supports the poor and working class. He has their support. WHY is that our business? Would it have anything to do with the fact that the country is loaded with oil?
Is Chavez worse than Kim Jung-Il (or Kim Jung-Un)? Is he really worse than Stalin? (Keep in mind Stalin salted the Ukrainian farmer's fields AND slaughtered "his" people.)
I REALLY like the Ecuadorian President, Rafael Correa. I stand up and applaud that he will not allow drilling in the Ecuadorian Rain Forest.

And Ecuador will get $3.6 billion on top of it

Edit: Could a mod add "Vive la revolution!" to my mod quote, please?

I never said he's worse than Stalin. And yes, she has money so living is a lot easier.
But Chavez and his administration are terrible. They have been cited for various human rights violations. They don't allow free speech by shutting down non-government broadcast stations. They silence political opposition and rallies/protests.
Fellow South American countries have joined the United States in wanting these human rights violations explored.
Chávez has railed against the OAS as beholden to the interests of the United States. Venezuela declined to cooperate with the commission, its members said, prompting commissioners -- jurists and rights activists from Antigua, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, El Salvador and the United States -- to hold hearings and seek out Venezuelan activists and politicians to compile information about the suspected abuses.
