So currently I'm doing data entry at a book distributor for a measly $9 an hour. I've been doing this since March, and I've been working there since June 2009 (I worked in the warehouse and moved up).

However, this was just supposed to be a temporary job. I've graduated college, and been out since December 2008. I have a B.A. in History. I have my resume posted on Monster, CareerBuilder, LinkedIn. I've inquired to people, taken my Praxis for Social Studies teaching (and passed), getting ready to go back to school so I can get certified to be a teacher.

But I don't want to wait that long to have to get a new job. So what am I doing wrong here? I know the economy is bad, but have I not looked in the right places? Is there something else I can do. And does anyone have any ideas on what the hell I can do with the history degree aside from just working as a teacher or being in museums? I'd like to make ~$15 dollars an hour at least. It would be nice to start getting a little more financially secure so I can actually move out of my parents house. -_-

Any advice would be helpful.

The only advice I can give you is, don't be a felon. It hasn't helped me much.

i would not invest the money into a teaching degree now, with all the uncertainty going on in that field.

Yeah, every single job I've gotten since college has been thru a contact I previously knew.

Trying to get a teaching job in NJ right now is suicide, especially with only a BA. My advice is to look in other states. You aren't going to find much love in Jersey.

Also, 9 dollars an hour for a temp job? You're at the wrong temp agency.

No no no, the job was only supposed to be temporary for me until I found another job. Didn't get it through a temp agency, just got it through someone who I knew.

They are all correct. You need to know someone to get any kind of decent job. In the meantime if you are looking for temporary cash go apply for a waiter or barback job at the restaurants or bars in your area. I dont think Ive ever known one that makes less then $10 / hour at least. Plus it would free up your days to look for work.
